Israel recently marked two years since Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Friday, September 27, 2024.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in New York for the UN General Assembly when he authorized the strike.

At 6:21 p.m., Israeli Air Force jets struck Hezbollah&#8217;s underground headquarters in Beirut&#8217;s Dahiyeh district with 83 bombs, according to the IDF. Israel announced Nasrallah&#8217;s death the following day, and Hezbollah confirmed it.

Belaaz can now reveal a previously unreported detail about the intelligence behind the operation: information about Nasrallah&#8217;s whereabouts also came through the Israel Prison Service, where Chareidim serve in key intelligence roles.

As part of reforms in recent years, the Prison Service has strengthened its intelligence wing, which gathers information from security prisoners and shares it with Israel&#8217;s defense establishment.

A number of Chareidim hold key positions in the unit, which works regularly with the Shin Bet and Mossad.

According to a senior Israel Prison Service official who spoke with Belaaz News, a prisoner affiliated with Hezbollah disclosed information about Nasrallah&#8217;s location. The information was passed to Israel&#8217;s political and military leadership while Netanyahu was abroad.

Israel seized the opportunity and carried out the strike that killed Nasrallah.

British police said Thursday that a 22-year-old British man suspected of preparing terrorist acts against an airbase has been released on bail. He is the seventh person arrested as part of an investigation into an alleged plot targeting RAF Fairford.

Counter Terrorism Policing said the man was arrested in Westminster, where officers also searched a property. The investigation centers on suspected terrorist activity connected to the Gloucestershire airbase.

The United States said Monday that an Iran-linked threat led to the withdrawal of American bomber aircraft from RAF Fairford. The US has previously used the British base in military operations against Iran.

Six other men arrested in connection with the investigation have also been released on bail by British authorities.

US officials told Reuters that the bombers were redeployed because of concerns over a suspected Iranian plan to conduct a sophisticated drone attack against the facility. Many details surrounding the alleged plot, however, have not been publicly disclosed.

British-Iranian National Among Those Arrested

Five of the suspects were arrested near RAF Fairford on September 27. All five were British nationals. A dual British-Iranian citizen was arrested later that week and subsequently released on bail.

Counter-terrorism police said the latest suspect was released under strict conditions while the investigation continues.

The arrests followed a major police response at RAF Fairford, a facility that hosts US Air Force personnel and has played an important role in American military operations.

Authorities have not publicly provided detailed evidence describing the alleged plot or explained precisely what actions the suspects are accused of taking. The investigation remains active.

British Man Suspected in RAF Fairford Terror Plot Released on Bail

Prosecutors have charged a 22-year-old pharmacology student at Palestinian al-Quds University in East Jerusalem with allegedly preparing explosives and chemical weapons for an attack targeting Jews. According to the indictment, his initial plan involved attacking law enforcement officers in response to parking tickets issued to worshipers at his mosque.

Muhammad Shalbi faces charges in Jerusalem District Court of preparing to commit murder with a terror motive, an offense punishable by up to 15 years in prison, as well as receiving training for terrorist purposes, which carries a potential seven-year sentence.

Shalbi was arrested on August 30. Prosecutors say that after the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack, he “underwent a process of religious revival and ideological radicalization,” according to the indictment filed by the Jerusalem District Attorney’s Office.

Investigators allege that Shalbi began attending a mosque regularly in Beit Hanina, an East Jerusalem neighborhood, while consuming online material “identified with the terrorist groups Hamas and ISIS.” Prosecutors say he eventually resolved to “act against the State of Israel and security forces.”

According to the indictment, sometime around the beginning of 2025, Shalbi allegedly planned to detonate an explosive near the mosque and target police officers. Prosecutors say he was motivated by anger over parking tickets issued to vehicles belonging to worshipers who had parked near the mosque during prayers.

The indictment alleges that Shalbi monitored the officers for roughly two months while downloading instructional material concerning explosives. Prosecutors say he eventually abandoned that plan after the officers stopped appearing at the location.

Investigators allege that Shalbi subsequently developed a broader plan that continued until his arrest. Prosecutors say he “planned to carry out a terrorist attack in preparation for the ‘Day of Judgment,’ in which, according to his view, Jerusalem would be conquered.” During interrogation, the suspect allegedly said his objective was to kill “a ton of Jews.”

Around September 2025, prosecutors allege that Shalbi made two trips to Ramallah to obtain various laboratory and chemical materials. The indictment says the purchases included a thermometer, measuring cup, half a liter of hydrochloric acid, and several grams each of potassium permanganate, potassium chlorate, sodium sulfate and sodium hydroxide. Prosecutors noted that some of these substances can be used to generate chlorine gas, a choking agent that has been employed as a chemical weapon.

The indictment further alleges that Shalbi conducted an experiment in his bathtub involving potassium chlorate and sugar, a combination that can produce a highly combustible substance.

Prosecutors also accuse him of researching methods for creating an explosive using acetylsalicylic acid, a substance commonly sold in pharmacies as aspirin.

As part of what prosecutors describe as preparations for the planned “Day of Judgment” attack, Shalbi allegedly downloaded dozens of files containing information about producing explosives and chemical weapons from a Telegram group associated with ISIS. According to the indictment, he subsequently erased the files and his search history “with the aim of covering up his actions.”

The indictment also alleges that Shalbi wrote two recipes in a notebook for “toxins that can kill people through touch or taste.” Prosecutors say the notebook additionally contained a list of materials that could potentially be used in explosive devices, including substances obtainable from pharmacies.

Palestinian Student Charged Over Alleged Plot to Kill Jews With Chemicals and Explosives

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not been “a cooperative partner” in the US-led effort to rebuild Gaza, a senior US official tells The Washington Post.

“He has done a number of things to aggravate the situation,” alleges the official.

The official cited the slow pace of the Israel Defense Forces’ advance in Gaza, saying Israeli forces have taken control of an additional 10 percent of the Strip beyond the area stipulated in the 2025 ceasefire agreement with Hamas.

US President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan has largely stalled as the Board, Hamas and Israel remain divided over the terms and timing of Hamas’s disarmament and the withdrawal of Israeli forces. Israeli officials have repeatedly maintained that Gaza reconstruction cannot begin until Hamas gives up its weapons.

Senior US Official Accuses Netanyahu of Hindering Gaza Reconstruction Efforts

Hamas continues to maintain effective control over Gaza after three years of war and is reportedly generating millions of dollars each day by taxing goods entering the Strip and selling humanitarian aid on the black market at inflated prices, according to Neomi Neumann, the former head of research for the Shin Bet.

“Everything that enters the Strip becomes a source of income for Hamas,” Neumann told the Kan public broadcaster. She said Hamas uses its economic influence to deepen its dependence among Gaza’s population while maintaining order through a decentralized governing structure.

Neumann estimates that Hamas brings in between $2 million and $5 million in revenue each day. She said the income allows the organization to preserve its influence over Gaza’s residents while also financing its ongoing operations.

Neumann expressed support for US President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan, but argued that both Israel and Hamas are currently standing in the way of its implementation.

“Hamas says Israel must withdraw first, while Israel demands that Hamas disarm,” she says.

“The National Committee for the Administration of Gaza and the International Stabilization Force must enter the Strip so that Hamas loses strength,” Neumann says.

She said that, over time, the Palestinian Authority should assume responsibility for governing Gaza and ultimately replace Hamas as the territory’s governing authority.

The standoff that has played out between Jerusalem and London over recent months reached a calm this morning with a compromise deal: a diplomatic mission will remain in Jerusalem, and in return, Israeli diplomats will not be expelled from England.

The confrontation began with Britain&#8217;s recognition of a Palestinian state, followed by sanctions against businesses and individuals in Judea and Samaria and against political figures.

Following that decision, Israel&#8217;s Foreign Minister announced last month that, with the Prime Minister&#8217;s approval, he had decided to close the British Consulate in Jerusalem and expel all of the diplomats working there.

Britain&#8217;s response was not long in coming, with London recently announcing the expulsion of Israeli diplomats in response to the Israeli government&#8217;s moves.

This morning, however, the sides reached understandings to calm the ongoing dispute. The consulate in Jerusalem is indeed closing in its current form. The sign has already been removed and its consular status has been revoked. In practice, though, Israel is allowing the British to keep a reduced diplomatic mission at the site under a different name.

Of the consulate&#8217;s 27 staff members, 20 will leave Israel. Seven diplomats will stay and continue operating under the name UK Mission.

The compromise comes as part of the continuing dialogue between Jerusalem and London, aimed in part at preventing an escalation of British measures against Israel, including possible sanctions.

Israel–UK Crisis Resolved: British Diplomatic Mission to Remain in Jerusalem

The Pentagon has instructed US Central Command to complete preparations for a return to major combat operations against Iran, Axios reported Wednesday, citing US officials.

According to the report by Barak Ravid, the order was issued several days ago and carries no date for launching strikes. President Trump has not made a final decision.

US and Israeli sources told Axios that strikes could come before the US midterm elections, and possibly before Israel&#8217;s elections a week earlier. One Israeli official cautioned that the odds of action before the vote are low but not ruled out, and rise sharply after the midterms.

A renewed campaign would reportedly involve heavy bombing of Iranian energy, infrastructure and nuclear targets, carried out jointly with Israel, with the IDF taking part.

A White House official told Axios that all options remain available to the president and that the situation will be resolved &#8220;the easy way or the hard way.&#8221;

The report follows a Camp David meeting of Trump&#8217;s national security team on Friday and a Wednesday call between Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu, their second in days. Talks with Tehran remain stalled, with Qatari mediators still awaiting Iran&#8217;s answer to a US counterproposal.

Two Israeli officials told Axios the Iranian regime is desperate and may strike first.

Police have reportedly launched investigations into two senior Transportation Ministry officials following security failures connected to last week’s attempted attack aboard flydubai Flight 1073 en route to Tel Aviv, according to Hebrew-language media reports.

Haaretz and Channel 12 reported Wednesday that investigators are examining possible conflicts of interest involving Dvir Rubinstein and Avri Cohen, whose outside activities allegedly overlapped with their official responsibilities at the ministry.

Rubinstein has served for 19 years as the ministry’s aviation security director. Channel 12 reported that he is responsible for issuing security clearances and permits to foreign airlines and flights operating into Israel, including flydubai. The airline’s Dubai-to-Tel Aviv service was targeted last week when its Omani copilot allegedly attempted to crash the aircraft in what was described as a thwarted terror attack.

At the same time, Rubinstein reportedly carried out paid consulting and training for airlines under his oversight, including flydubai and Emirates. According to Channel 12, he traveled to the United Arab Emirates to conduct some of that work. The report also showed certificates from airlines acknowledging training he had provided.

The report raised concerns about the potential conflict created by Rubinstein privately working for airlines whose operations he was officially responsible for supervising.

The Transportation Ministry responded that Rubinstein is an outside contractor rather than a civil servant and said that “his outside business was approved in accordance with the law, and was performed outside the hours of his work for the ministry.”

Cohen, meanwhile, reportedly worked outside his government position as a “reserve security officer” for Israeli airlines at an overseas airport. Haaretz said the outside position was unrelated to his official duties, prompting questions about his ability to focus on a ministry role that includes oversight of foreign airline crews.

Cohen has said that he obtained authorization in 2018 from the ministry’s director at the time to perform outside work. However, Keren Terner, who held that position then, along with two other officials familiar with the matter, told Haaretz that no such approval had been granted. Haaretz also requested documentation from Cohen supporting his claim but did not receive a response.

According to Haaretz, the ministry did not learn about Cohen’s outside employment until approximately eight months ago, when an anonymous complaint prompted an internal inquiry. That investigation reportedly determined that Cohen had been performing outside work since 2018 without authorization.

In a statement issued Monday and quoted by Globes, the ministry said Cohen was required to obtain authorization from the Civil Service Commission before taking outside employment. The ministry said “the ministry’s administration did not pass along any such request with respect to [Cohen], and in any event he didn’t receive permission.”

The ministry further stated that “from the moment the ministry was notified that the employee was involved in outside work, it was made clear to him, in no uncertain terms, that he must immediately stop all outside work as long as he lacks approval.”

The reported police investigations followed additional revelations Tuesday concerning the ministry’s handling of aviation security. Those reports included claims that security officials had offered to increase monitoring of foreign flights but that the proposals were rejected.

Earlier this year, the Transportation Ministry also held internal discussions over which government division should be responsible for security involving foreign and charter flights. The Shin Bet and National Security Council reportedly advocated transferring the responsibility to the Civil Aviation Authority, which is larger and considered better equipped for the task than the ministry’s Security Division. Transportation Minister Miri Regev reportedly rejected the proposal.

The Transportation Ministry and Israel’s security establishment have faced mounting criticism following the attack, particularly over the monitoring of pilots and crew members from countries considered hostile to Israel who were permitted to operate flights into the country.

On September 30, Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, the copilot of flydubai Flight 1073, allegedly attacked the aircraft’s captain, Smit Machchhar. Investigators say al-Hammami attempted to bring down the plane, potentially killing roughly 180 passengers and crew members, most of whom were Israelis.

The attack was ultimately stopped after Machchhar and several Israeli passengers intervened and managed to overpower al-Hammami.

The US-backed Board of Peace marked the third anniversary of the Hamas-led October 7 attack by honoring those killed and abducted while acknowledging the extensive suffering experienced by Israelis and Palestinians during the ensuing war. The organization also reaffirmed its support for advancing the US-backed initiative aimed at achieving Gaza’s “demilitarization and deradicalization.”

“We remember those murdered and taken from us, and we will not allow their loss to be forgotten,” the Board said in a lengthy statement posted on X. “We also lament the immense loss of life and profound suffering endured by Israelis and Palestinians in the war unleashed by Hamas on October 7. That suffering has left deep wounds across the region,” it added.

The international body praised US President Donald Trump for his “commitment to the people of Israel” and credited his administration with helping secure the return of the remaining hostages from Gaza last year. The Board said it intends to use its mandate from the United Nations Security Council to help implement Trump&#8217;s 20-point proposal for Gaza.

“Genuine and durable security for Israel is the foundation on which any peace must be built, and it is the surest guarantee that no October 7 will ever happen again,” the Board wrote.

Board of Peace Says October 7 War Left Deep Regional Wounds, Urges Gaza Plan to Move Forward

Iran is preparing to shut down several transit routes through the Strait of Hormuz that it considers unauthorized, according to an adviser to the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who spoke to the semi-official Fars news agency.

Mohammadreza Naqdi said the routes were established after sections of the strategic waterway’s rocky passages were blasted and damaged. He said the channels have been used by small vessels involved in oil smuggling.

The reported move comes as questions persist over the volume of oil and other commercial traffic passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The closure of the routes could further restrict maritime movement through one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.

Naqdi’s comments challenge claims that oil shipments through the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz are returning to levels seen before the war, suggesting that some of the reported traffic may instead be connected to unauthorized or illicit routes.

Iran Says It Will Close ‘Illegal Routes’ Through Strait of Hormuz

Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed Wednesday that they had launched attacks against military installations and airports in neighboring Saudi Arabia, adding another dangerous dimension to the expanding regional conflict involving Iran. The attacks also threatened a key alternative shipping route near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, amid continued disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Houthi military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said on social media that the group had fired ballistic missiles and launched drones toward King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. He offered no evidence to substantiate the claim.

Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 reported brief disruptions to flights arriving at and departing from the Riyadh airport.

Saree also said Houthi forces targeted Abha airport, which has repeatedly come under attack from Houthi missiles and drones. The rebels further claimed strikes against an air base in Khamis Mushait and military facilities in Najran and Asir. The sites are located in southwestern Saudi Arabia near Yemen&#8217;s border.

Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis, said coalition forces intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile north of Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia and allied Yemeni forces have launched an extensive ground and air campaign against the Houthis in recent days, seeking to recover territory the rebels captured roughly a month ago along Yemen&#8217;s western Red Sea coast and near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Control of those areas has strengthened the Houthis&#8217; ability to monitor maritime traffic as they seek to disrupt Saudi shipping.

Coalition officials said Monday that their forces had retaken several strategically important positions near the strait.

Since then, much of the fighting has focused on Dhubab, a strategically located town roughly 30 miles south of the port city of Mokha, according to both Houthi representatives and Yemen&#8217;s internationally recognized government.

Fighting has also been reported in Waziayah district in southwestern Taiz province. The area connects Yemen&#8217;s mountainous interior with the Red Sea and provides views toward routes leading to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The Houthis separately claimed early Wednesday that they had launched a missile attack on Aden, the southern port city that serves as the headquarters of Yemen&#8217;s internationally recognized government. An Associated Press journalist reported hearing explosions at approximately 2 a.m. local time, or 7 p.m. Tuesday Eastern Time.

Saree said ballistic missiles struck a military camp near Aden&#8217;s airport.

Security officials in Aden said two missiles were fired toward the airport but caused no casualties. The facility is located close to government offices.

“The targeting of this vital civilian facility represents a direct threat to the safety of civilians, passengers, employees and flight crews,” the Aden police said in a statement.

Yemen&#8217;s Human Rights Ministry warned that the airport strike could lead to “a humanitarian disaster,” saying one missile landed near the runway shortly before a flight from Cairo was scheduled to arrive.

Flight 603, operated by Yemen&#8217;s national airline, landed safely in Aden at 3:30 a.m., according to FlightAware.

The ministry said the missile struck while other travelers were waiting to board a flight bound for the Saudi coastal city of Jeddah.

“The Houthis believe that they can maximize Saudi economic costs and compel Saudi Arabia to surrender to Houthi demands by striking civilian infrastructure, such as oil facilities and airports,” the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, wrote in an analysis.

Houthis Claim Missile and Drone Strikes on Saudi Arabia and Aden as Yemen Offensive Escalates

With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, the Federal Election Commission has been unable to enforce campaign finance laws for more than a year, leaving complaints unresolved and political campaigns without formal guidance.

The agency&#8217;s paralysis was highlighted in July, when Reps. Mike Lawler, a New York Republican, and Josh Gottheimer, a New Jersey Democrat, urged the FEC, Justice Department and Homeland Security Department to address the risk of artificial intelligence spreading election misinformation. The lawmakers called for action against &#8220;AI-driven threats to election integrity.&#8221;

A September survey by the American Association of Political Consultants Foundation found that roughly one-quarter of likely voters use AI tools daily, while at least 38% have obtained information about candidates or voting through AI-generated search summaries.

Democratic Commissioner Shana Broussard told the lawmakers that the FEC could not act. With only two of its six seats filled, the agency lacks the four commissioners required for a quorum. In her response, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, Broussard wrote that the agency &#8220;cannot proceed.&#8221;

Without a quorum, the FEC can publish campaign finance reports, answer general questions and accept complaints, but cannot open investigations, impose fines, establish rules or issue formal advisory opinions.

Since May 2025, the commission has not resolved an enforcement case by vote or approved new civil penalties. In the preceding 12 months, it closed 180 cases and imposed approximately $1 million in penalties. Meanwhile, its enforcement backlog has doubled, rising from 154 cases to 307. The FEC declined to comment.

Lawmakers from both parties have encountered the same roadblock. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Florida Republican, asked whether campaign funds could cover childcare while she voted and attended committee hearings. After learning that the Capitol daycare center only offers full-time care, she emailed the FEC, writing, &#8220;Please advise on what I can do,&#8221; but was told the commission could not issue an advisory opinion.

Luna said she contacted the White House to urge action on restoring the agency&#8217;s quorum.

&#8220;Until the FEC meets, we&#8217;re going to be operating in a gray area, which is why we need them to get a quorum to get a yes or no,&#8221; Luna told CBS News. &#8220;Obviously, we don&#8217;t want to get in trouble.&#8221;

Former FEC attorney Adav Noti warned that the lack of enforcement may encourage violations. He said the perception that complaints will go unanswered has resulted in &#8220;more boundary-pushing than we would otherwise see.&#8221;

Noti now heads the Campaign Legal Center, which recently filed a complaint alleging President Trump improperly controls MAGA Inc., a pro-Trump super PAC. The complaint cited Trump&#8217;s September description of the group&#8217;s funds as &#8220;my money that I control.&#8221;

Trump said this week that MAGA Inc. would begin paying for television advertisements focused on him that his administration had previously funded with taxpayer money. The spending had drawn public scrutiny.

Although super PACs can accept unlimited contributions, federal law prohibits officeholders from controlling them or directing their spending.

&#8220;Since there is just absolutely no enforcement mechanism right now, there&#8217;s sort of blanket impunity for lawbreaking,&#8221; Noti said. A MAGA Inc. spokesperson denied wrongdoing and said the organization follows the law.

Conservatives have also criticized the commission&#8217;s inaction. Paul Kamenar, an attorney with the National Legal and Policy Center, said, &#8220;It is very disconcerting that the FEC is incapable of carrying out any enforcement actions.&#8221;

The group accused Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, of improperly using campaign funds to pay a psychiatrist. That complaint remains unresolved. Her office and campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

&#8220;We are hobbled&#8221;

The FEC&#8217;s breakdown followed several commissioner departures during Trump&#8217;s return to the White House. Republican Sean Cooksey resigned in January 2025 to become a senior attorney for Vice President JD Vance. Weeks later, Trump removed Democratic Chairwoman Ellen Weintraub, who had served since 2002 and challenged the legality of her dismissal.

Republican Allen Dickerson subsequently resigned, and Republican Trey Trainor also left, ultimately leaving only two commissioners, both Democrats. For the first time since the FEC was established in 1974 following the Watergate scandal, neither major party had a representative on the commission.

&#8220;Other people report that we&#8217;re hobbled, and I hate to agree with it, but we are hobbled,&#8221; Broussard said.

Trump nominated two Republicans in February, but the Senate has yet to hold hearings on either nominee.

The resulting deadlock has blocked requests from lawmakers across the political spectrum. Rep. Mike Levin, a California Democrat, sought an investigation into allegations that Hungary&#8217;s government funneled money to the Conservative Political Action Conference. Broussard replied that complaints &#8220;cannot proceed through the enforcement process.&#8221; In June, she and Democratic Commissioner Dara Lindenbaum gave Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert a similar response.

The commission has also been unable to address emerging campaign finance questions. Rep. Mike Thompson, a California Democrat, asked whether candidates and political committees trading on prediction markets such as Kalshi might trigger disclosure requirements.

Broussard responded that the FEC &#8220;is currently unable to commence rulemakings or to issue advisory opinions.&#8221;

Thompson warned that prediction markets &#8220;can be easily manipulated by wealthy special interests&#8221; and said Congress and the FEC &#8220;should be tackling this emerging issue now.&#8221;

Sen. Elissa Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat, also sought guidance last year on whether campaign funds could cover legal defense costs &#8220;if the senator is sued for something that happens in the course of her official employment,&#8221; according to emails. Her spokesperson said the inquiry concerned campaign funds and Senate-authorized liability insurance, adding that no lawsuit was anticipated.

Record spending raises concerns

The FEC&#8217;s paralysis comes as political advertising spending is projected to reach a record $11.6 billion in 2026, according to AdImpact—about $400 million more than in 2024, a presidential election year.

Much of the money is difficult to trace. Hundreds of millions of dollars have moved through political groups that do not disclose their donors, including super PACs established shortly before elections.

Campaigns continue filing complaints despite the commission&#8217;s inability to act. In Texas, Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico&#8217;s campaign accused Republican Ken Paxton of improperly spending dark money; the groups involved say they comply with the law. In Nebraska, conservative critics accused independent Senate candidate Dan Osborn of misusing campaign and PAC funds. His campaign called the allegations politically motivated.

Without a functioning commission to interpret and enforce the rules, political campaigns must navigate uncertain legal boundaries themselves, said Craig Holman, Public Citizen&#8217;s lobbyist on ethics and campaign finance.

&#8220;We&#8217;ve got no one that can judge the merits of what&#8217;s going on, enforce the law and provide guidance to candidates and political committees that seriously want it,&#8221; Holman said. &#8220;So everyone knows you can do whatever you want this time around.&#8221;

FEC Deadlock Leaves Campaign Finance Rules Unenforced Before Midterms

Vice President JD Vance says Iran must make a meaningful reduction in its nuclear enrichment capacity before Washington agrees to end the seven-month war, Reuters reports.

In an exclusive interview with Reuters during a campaign trip to Alaska on Monday, Vance said the US wants an actual reduction, not promises of future limits.

&#8220;I think if they want to show a commitment to not building a nuclear weapon, they would do something meaningful on their enrichment capacity,&#8221; Vance said. &#8220;We&#8217;re not going to trade words for actions.&#8221;

Vance also said Washington is unsure who holds authority in Tehran: &#8220;One of the things we picked up on is it&#8217;s not totally clear how their country makes decisions.&#8221; On Sunday, a day before Vance&#8217;s interview, Iran&#8217;s Foreign Ministry said US officials understand Iran&#8217;s leadership structure.

VANCE: Iran Must Do “Something Meaningful” on Enrichment to End War

A new congressional report lists 81 US military aircraft as lost or damaged in operations against Iran, nearly double the 42 identified in an earlier version this spring.

The Congressional Research Service report, updated October 5, covers fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and drones since the US, in coordination with Israel, began Operation Epic Fury on February 28. It draws on military statements, news reports and findings from the Defense Department&#8217;s inspector general.

The figure combines aircraft that were destroyed with aircraft that were only damaged. CRS notes that it does not have access to classified military damage assessments.

On cost, the report cites a September estimate from the Congressional Budget Office that replacing equipment lost through August 1 would run between $1.9 billion and $3.3 billion, depending on the Pentagon&#8217;s replacement plans.

Drones account for a large share of the losses. The inspector general&#8217;s report, which covers April 1 through June 30, said as many as 30 MQ-9A Reaper drones were destroyed.

That same inspector general report put the cost of the war at about $33.4 billion, including $22.3 billion in expended munitions.

Shin Bet Director David Zini delivered an unusual warning at the most recent Security Cabinet meeting on Sunday, telling ministers there is a danger of terror emerging from the heart of Israel, from areas where Bedouins live.

&#8220;There are places in the Bedouin encampments with military infrastructure that we are thwarting all the time, attempts to establish military-style battalions. It is a very worrying phenomenon,&#8221; Zini told the ministers.

The remarks were made during a cabinet session that dealt with threats from Gaza and Judea and Samaria.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned at Tuesday&#8217;s cabinet meeting that Hamas will attempt an attack ahead of Israel&#8217;s elections in three weeks, as the country prepares to mark three years since the October 7 massacre.

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video height="720" style="aspect-ratio: 1280 / 720;" width="1280" controls src="https://api.belaaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/cd22f4a9-836c-4e83-83e8-e46eb8d870f8.mov"></video></figure>

&#8220;Precisely because Hamas is so weak, it will try to challenge us with what remains of its strength ahead of the elections, in order to try to influence them,&#8221; Netanyahu said. &#8220;We are prepared for this. First of all, we will thwart such attempts, and in any case we will respond with tremendous force if they make that mistake.&#8221;

He added: &#8220;I say to all our enemies: look at what we did to you on seven fronts in the War of Redemption. Don&#8217;t mess with us.&#8221;

Israel&#8217;s National Security Council also issued a warning to Israelis, stating: &#8220;There is a heightened risk of attempted attacks against Israelis and Jews abroad, alongside demonstrations and disturbances. The terror organizations, led by Iran and its proxies, Hamas and global jihad elements, view this date as a significant milestone.&#8221;

The NSC is asking the Israeli public to:

Netanyahu Warns: “Hamas Will Try to Challenge Us Ahead of the Elections”

DOHA, Qatar — Qatar says indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran remain active despite signs that the diplomatic process has reached an apparent stalemate, with the Middle East conflict now seven months old.

Ibrahim Al-Hashmi, an official with Qatar’s foreign ministry, said during a regular press briefing that the discussions are addressing “the concerns of the various parties.”

“I can confirm that the talks are continuing and the exchange of messages between different parties are continuing via Qatar and its regional partners,” he said.

Qatar has been facilitating communication between Washington and Tehran as the two sides attempt to find a negotiated path toward ending the conflict. The diplomatic effort comes as the war continues to carry significant regional and international costs.

“As you know, the scale of this conflict and the magnitude of the price that the whole world is paying require us to put our best efforts to end this immediately through a negotiable solution on the negotiation table,” Al-Hashmi said.

Despite the lack of an apparent breakthrough, Qatar’s statement indicates that diplomatic channels remain open and that messages are still being exchanged through Doha and other regional partners. The mediator’s comments suggest that efforts to reach an agreement have not been abandoned despite the current impasse.

Defense Minister Israel Katz told ministers at the weekly cabinet meeting that the Israel Defense Forces has been instructed to prepare for the possibility of a military confrontation with the Palestinian Authority in Judea and Samaria

Katz, who has made increasingly forceful public statements in recent weeks as Israel approaches its October 27 election, outlined what he described as the IDF’s “reference scenario” for the Judea and Samaria.

The scenario “stipulates that preparations must be made for the possibility of an attack by jihadist elements against settlers and IDF soldiers, as a lesson from the events of October 7,” Katz told the ministers.

He said the military is also preparing for the possibility that Palestinian security forces and the Tanzim organization, which is affiliated with the PA, could turn their weapons on Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Katz said that if such an attack occurred, Israel would declare war on the Palestinian Authority. He said the IDF would then carry out a broad military operation based on a detailed plan that was formulated and approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Katz himself.

According to Katz, the proposed campaign in Judea and Samaria “would be short and forceful and would include the use of ground and air forces and special means, the elimination and expulsion of senior officials, the destruction of weapons, and the large-scale evacuation of residents and destruction of terror infrastructure inside the cities and in all refugee camps… in accordance with the Gaza and Lebanon models, all alongside reinforcing forces and protecting Israeli communities.”

He emphasized that Israel would not allow a prolonged uprising resembling previous periods of Palestinian violence.

“There will not be an intifada lasting years as there was in the past, but rather a short and forceful war with a clear decision and a change in the reality,” he said.

Katz issued a similar warning last month, threatening “full-scale war” against the Palestinian Authority if it were to prepare an attack modeled on the Hamas-led assault of October 7.

Although members of Israel’s government have for years sharply criticized the Palestinian Authority, the country’s defense establishment has generally maintained a more cooperative position. Israeli security officials have regarded PA President Mahmoud Abbas and the authority’s security forces as significant partners in efforts to combat terrorism and maintain security in Judea and Samaria

Katz Warns Cabinet: IDF Preparing for Possible War With Palestinian Authority

Nearly one million Israelis have turned to ERAN, the country’s emotional first-aid and mental health support service, since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, according to a report released Tuesday by the nonprofit organization. &#8211; (Via Times of Israel)

The organization said calls involving suicidal thoughts, intentions, or actions have risen sharply among teenagers and young adults during the three years since terrorists attacked communities in southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and abducting 251 others to Gaza.

“The three years of war have confronted us with a harsh and ongoing reality,” said David Koren, ERAN’s CEO. “Behind every call for help stands a person grappling with pain, loss, anxiety, loneliness, or burnout — and often a combination of these.”

Although the overall number of requests reached its highest levels during the first two years of the war before declining somewhat in the third, ERAN said the data continues to show significant emotional distress, with loneliness becoming increasingly widespread.

During the three-year period, ERAN’s 1,850 trained volunteers, working with mental health professionals, responded to 928,911 requests for assistance. That total included 774,604 telephone calls and another 154,307 contacts through WhatsApp, online chat, SMS, and email.

In the early stages of the war, many callers were dealing with immediate trauma, panic, and grief. As the conflict continued, those acute reactions increasingly gave way to persistent loneliness and longer-term emotional difficulties.

Loneliness became a growing concern among Israelis generally. It represented approximately 28% of all inquiries during the first year but rose to 41% by the third year, making it the most frequently reported issue. ERAN professionals attributed the trend to the accumulated psychological effects of prolonged uncertainty, pressure on families, and disrupted social routines.

Requests for assistance from children, teenagers, and young adults through age 24 also increased consistently throughout the three years, eventually representing nearly one-quarter of all contacts. Within this age group, calls involving suicidal thoughts, intentions, or actions increased from 2.6% during the first year to 4.4% during the third.

Overall, ERAN received 21,829 suicide-related contacts during the three-year period, accounting for approximately 2.35% of all inquiries.

The share of contacts involving suicidal thoughts, intentions, or actions rose from 2% of all inquiries during the first year to 2.2% in the second and 2.83% in the third.

ERAN officials emphasized that the figures measure only the percentage of hotline contacts in which suicidal issues were raised. They cautioned that the data cannot be used to establish definitive conclusions about changes in actual suicidal behavior across Israel.

According to ERAN, suicidal distress can emerge from a complicated combination of personal circumstances, risk factors, and social or individual characteristics rather than from one specific cause. Still, officials said the continued increase in suicide-related hotline contacts demonstrates the importance of maintaining accessible, long-term mental health support.

The Mental Health Toll on Soldiers

ERAN’s findings also highlighted the psychological burden experienced by Israeli military personnel. During the war, the organization responded to approximately 160,000 calls from active-duty soldiers and reservists, with men making up 60% of those contacts.

Feelings of isolation among military personnel increased substantially. Loneliness represented 41% of military-related inquiries during both the second and third years of the war.

ERAN professionals said soldiers may have difficulty reconciling intense experiences from military service with their return to civilian and family life, potentially leaving them feeling deeply isolated. Reports involving sexual abuse and violence among military personnel also increased, rising from 5% of inquiries in the first year to 10% in the second before declining slightly to 8% in the third.

Anxiety and Trauma-Related Calls Decline

The percentage of inquiries concerning psychological pain, depression, and acute emotional distress fell from a first-year peak of 26.6% to approximately 20% during each of the following two years.

Requests related specifically to anxiety, trauma, and loss also declined, dropping from 18.4% during the first year to 10.6% in the second and 9.6% in the third.

ERAN professionals cautioned that the decline should not be interpreted as proof that Israelis are experiencing less mental distress or that the psychological consequences of the war have ended. Instead, they said, the numbers indicate that the subjects people bring to the hotline have changed over time.

Among Israelis between 35 and 44, a demographic that includes many parents and reservists, the number seeking assistance increased steadily throughout the three-year period. Women represented 56% of inquiries from the general population.

“The report reminds us that precisely within the illusion of routine, it is vital to notice those who are struggling and identify signs of distress,” Shiri Daniels, ERAN’s national professional director, said. She urged the public to “ask people directly about suicide” when concerns arise.

“Listen closely,” Daniels said. “That way, we can offer help before their distress deepens.”

Nearly 1 Million Israelis Seek Mental Health Support Amid Three Years of War

Israel’s High Court of Justice has asked Democrats party chairman Yair Golan to consider withdrawing his petition seeking Shin Bet security protection, after the state presented the court with its assessment of the threats facing the opposition leader.

During the hearing, Shin Bet and government representatives outlined the security risks identified by authorities and described the protective measures being considered, according to a statement from Golan’s party.

Supreme Court President Isaac Amit said the court was not in a position to interfere with the Shin Bet’s professional security determinations. “We cannot intervene in professional security matters handled by the Shin Bet,” Amit said.

Amit also explained that the Shin Bet is responsible for directing police security arrangements for Golan and that the level of protection would be determined according to the threat assessment. Those assessments, he said, are subject to ongoing review.

Golan turned to the High Court after police placed the threat against him at level 4 on a six-level scale. His party has cited dozens of death threats as evidence of the danger he faces.

The Democrats have argued that insufficient protection is making it difficult for Golan to conduct his campaign ahead of Israel’s October 27 election. The party has also pointed to Yashar leader Gadi Eisenkot, who has been assigned the same threat level by police but has already received security protection.

Rather than immediately ruling on the petition, the court instructed the state to provide Golan’s attorneys with details of the proposed security arrangements. Once those details are reviewed, the Democrats are expected to determine whether to withdraw the case.

The dispute comes as Israel’s election campaign intensifies, placing renewed attention on the security arrangements provided to political candidates who face elevated threats.

High Court Presses Yair Golan to Drop Petition Over Shin Bet Security

Iranian authorities have introduced a reporting system aimed at gathering information on Iranians living outside the country, raising concerns among dissidents and analysts about an effort to extend Tehran’s surveillance apparatus beyond Iran’s borders.

The initiative, called Alaj, reportedly encouraged people to submit information about Iranians abroad whom they believed were working against Iran’s interests or national security. Reports said submissions could be made through a dedicated website, a Telegram bot and Iran’s Bale messaging platform. Iranian state television and the Revolutionary Guard-linked Fars News Agency reportedly publicized the program.

An Iranian official familiar with the initiative confirmed to Fox News Digital that Alaj and its Telegram chatbot were established to collect information about Iranians living overseas. The official said the website was later taken offline following criticism within Iran.

Iran International reported that the system claimed to have identified approximately 1,600 people, with about 600 allegedly located through information supplied by members of the public. Those figures have not been independently confirmed. The outlet also reported that information displayed through the system included names and photographs, while some listings allegedly contained national identification numbers, birth dates and fathers’ names.

Iranian-American journalist and foreign-policy analyst Lisa Daftari said the significance of the campaign goes beyond the collection of personal information. In her view, the initiative could create a climate in which Iranians abroad fear that fellow members of the diaspora might report them to authorities.

&#8220;Even if it&#8217;s just the perception that other Iranians can report you or can get you in trouble or that this app exists, it makes a lot of people fearful,&#8221; Daftari told Fox News Digital. &#8220;You&#8217;ll think twice before going to that next protest.&#8221;

She said those concerns can be particularly serious for people who continue to have relatives in Iran. Public political activity abroad, she argued, could potentially expose family members inside the country to pressure or retaliation.

&#8220;Now your face could be captured, you can get in trouble,&#8221; she said. &#8220;If you have family in Iran, they can get into trouble.&#8221;

Daftari characterized the campaign as a modern, digital version of a longstanding method of social control in Iran, where people may fear that neighbors, colleagues or acquaintances could report them to authorities.

&#8220;Now the regime wants to take this show on the road and do that here, here in the West,&#8221; Daftari said. &#8220;They want to intimidate people. And it works.&#8221;

Daftari said she has personally experienced intimidation that she believes has been connected to her public criticism of the Iranian government. She described being followed, targeted by hacking attempts and approached in person in several U.S. cities.

&#8220;I&#8217;ve been followed, I&#8217;ve been hacked multiple times, I have been approached in person in L.A., in New York, even at the airport,&#8221; she told Fox News Digital.

She previously said a major cyberattack compromised both her social-media accounts and personal and professional email. Following that incident, she said she was contacted by the FBI and subsequently worked with federal investigators.

According to Daftari, hackers also obtained private vacation photographs and sent them to her husband. She said the purpose was to demonstrate that those targeting her could locate and reach her.

&#8220;The message they want to send is very clear, that we know where you are, we can reach you,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And obviously the point is to intimidate and silence those who speak out, who report, who speak the truth and talk about all the crimes of this regime.&#8221;

She argued that intimidation can affect ordinary members of the Iranian-American community as well as prominent activists and journalists. Daftari recalled filming at a Los Angeles cafe where Iranian Americans were watching a World Cup match and seeing people deliberately avoid appearing on camera because they feared relatives in Iran could face consequences.

That experience, she said, demonstrates how surveillance and the fear of surveillance can influence behavior even when individuals have no way of knowing whether information about them has actually been reported.

The campaign has also affected Daftari&#8217;s own approach to personal security. She said she has become more conscious of where she parks, what information she makes public and potential vulnerabilities at locations she visits.

She recalled the difficulty of publicly announcing the location of her father&#8217;s memorial service after his death while simultaneously worrying about security.

&#8220;It does silence a lot of people and it does change the freedom by which we think we can operate here in the United States where we believe we have full freedom,&#8221; Daftari said.

&#8220;Their intimidation works,&#8221; she added. &#8220;It works to a certain extent on each individual.&#8221;

Daftari said Americans should view such activity as part of a broader confrontation with the Iranian regime rather than focusing exclusively on Tehran&#8217;s nuclear ambitions.

&#8220;It&#8217;s not just about nuclear weapons, it&#8217;s about a deadly ideology that has made its way here to U.S. soil,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We have to understand that.&#8221;

Iran’s Crackdown Goes Global as Regime Urges Citizens to Spy on Dissidents Abroad

Clashes broke out in recent hours in Meah Shearim after Jerusalem police officers who came to remove a Palestinian flag in the Chareidi neighborhood were met with resistance. Residents threw objects at the officers, including bottles and eggs, and police responded with stun grenades.

During the operation, police arrested three suspects, among them a child, for stone-throwing and disturbing public order. All of the suspects were transferred for further questioning at the police station. Police say forces are also conducting searches and overt and covert investigative activity to locate and arrest others involved in the assault and disturbances.

Israel Police said in a statement that it &#8220;views with great severity any attempt to harm civilians, police officers and law enforcement personnel who come to carry out their duties. The police will continue to act with determination, with a firm hand and with zero tolerance against any lawbreaker who acts violently, disturbs public order and attempts to harm the security forces.&#8221;

Clashes in Meah Shearim: Police Use Stun Grenades After Entering to Remove Palestinian Flag, 3 Arrested

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Monday that 4,000 of the 6,000 terrorists who crossed into Israel during the October 7 massacre have been eliminated, and issued a direct warning to the 2,000 who remain.

&#8220;6,000 terrorists crossed the border into Israel on October 7 and carried out the atrocities,&#8221; Katz said. &#8220;Of them, 4,000 have been eliminated so far, and 2,000 remain.&#8221;

Katz said the directive to the military applies to every one of them, regardless of rank.

&#8220;The instruction from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and myself to the IDF and all security bodies is sharp and clear: beyond the supreme goal of dismantling Hamas and demilitarizing Gaza, to pursue and eliminate all of them, without limitation and in any situation, from the senior ones to the junior ones,&#8221; he said.

The statement comes two days before the third anniversary of the attack.

4,000 of the 6,000 Terrorists Who Invaded on October 7 Have Been Eliminated “2,000 Remain”

The State Attorney&#8217;s Office filed an indictment against a lecturer at Bar-Ilan University accused of planning an extreme and murderous plot against hundreds of Arab citizens of Israel

The indictment was filed Monday in the Central District Court in Lod against a mathematics lecturer, about 60, from Petach Tikva, charging him with preparing an act of terror under the Counter-Terrorism Law, extortion by threats, and obstruction of justice.

According to the indictment, against the backdrop of the &#8220;Guardian of the Walls&#8221; riots, and more intensely following the &#8220;Swords of Iron&#8221; war, the defendant decided, out of a nationalist-ideological motive, to plan and carry out numerous simultaneous terror attacks. The aim was to cause the deaths of many hundreds of Arab citizens of Israel, including Bedouin, across the country, as well as Arabs living in eastern Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, in order to bring about their flight and permanent expulsion to Jordan, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

For more than three years, from early February 2023 until his arrest about two weeks ago, he allegedly devised a detailed plan he called &#8220;Ayit,&#8221; a Hebrew acronym for &#8220;the nation will carry out transfer.&#8221; Prosecutors say he took concrete preparatory steps, including advance field tours, drafting documents laying out the method of operation and its justifications, and attempting to recruit participants.

Under the plan, 72 Jewish attackers, at least half of them licensed gun owners and including the defendant himself, would be divided into 12 cells of six. Armed with pistols, rifles, axes and hammers, they would launch surprise mass attacks in mixed cities and Arab towns across Israel. The plan also envisioned pre-coordinated backing from subversive elements to be recruited from within the IDF, including the bombing of Arab population centers by the Air Force, Artillery Corps and Armored Corps.

According to the indictment, he tried for about a year and a half to recruit supporters and partners, without success. He also conducted a preliminary tour near the town of Tuba-Zangariyye, which he wanted as a central target, to study the best access and attack routes.

The indictment states that the defendant planned to approach Moshe Feiglin, who is running in the upcoming elections for the 26th Knesset as head of the Zehut list and No. 2 on the joint Zehut–Religious Zionism slate, to recruit him to the plan and then enlist additional activists with his help. He sought to invite pre-selected activists to a Zehut election rally, where they would be told they were being drafted for an attack the following day and handed a briefing with detailed instructions.

Prosecutors stressed that Feiglin did not respond to any of the defendant&#8217;s approaches. The indictment says the defendant then sent Feiglin a letter threatening to publicize it and damage him ahead of the elections unless he cooperated. Zehut said that as soon as the letters arrived, Feiglin and party leadership filed a formal police complaint.

Bar-Ilan Lecturer Indicted – Accused of Plotting Mass Terror Attacks Against Hundreds of Arab Citizens

An American tourist was arrested Sunday evening after arriving at the Kirya, the IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv, and arousing suspicion. According to the suspicion, the tourist photographed the site and told people nearby that he was planning to carry out an attack.

Police said Monday morning that officers from the Lev Tel Aviv station in the Yarkon District transferred him for questioning on the circumstances of the incident, and he was sent for a psychiatric evaluation.

The suspect will be brought before a court, where police will ask to extend his detention.

American Tourist Arrested Outside the Kirya in Tel Aviv – Allegedly Said He Planned an Attack

(Jerusalem Post) &#8211; Israel has killed an estimated two-thirds of the approximately 6,000 people who crossed from Gaza into Israel during the October 7, 2023, attack, according to figures presented by Military Intelligence chief Maj.-Gen. Shlomi Binder to the security cabinet.

An Israeli source familiar with Sunday&#8217;s briefing told The Jerusalem Post that roughly 4,000 of the infiltrators have been killed. Binder said the military intends to pursue those still alive.

&#8220;There are 2,000 remaining, and we will get to every last one of them,&#8221; Binder said.

The figures come as Israeli forces continue targeting Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives in Gaza. Among those reported killed in recent operations was Saqr Nabil Musa Qaisi, a Hamas Nukhba operative whom the IDF said had posed as the director of a humanitarian organization called Deniz Feneri. His death was announced following a strike on Sunday.

On Friday, the military reported killing Ibrahim Mustafa Suleiman Abu Oweimer, a Hamas Nukhba platoon commander who also participated in the October 7 infiltration. Israeli forces further reported eliminating two Islamic Jihad commanders responsible for rocket operations over the weekend.

Another reported target was Ali al-Amoudi, identified as the successor to Yahya Sinwar as Hamas&#8217;s leader in Gaza. The IDF has not confirmed his death, and Israeli media reports have differed over his status.

The military&#8217;s campaign against Hamas has continued despite the ceasefire that began in October 2025. In July, The Jerusalem Post reported that at least 420 Hamas operatives had been killed by Israeli forces since the truce took effect.

The period has also seen reports of Hamas using violence against Palestinians as it sought to reassert control over parts of Gaza. Estimates cited in the original report said Hamas had killed dozens or more people between October 2025 and July 2026.

The United Nations has estimated that around 1,000 Gazans were killed during that period. The figures cited in the report suggested that civilians accounted for less than half of those killed by Israeli forces since the ceasefire, though the estimates do not independently establish the circumstances of each death.

Defense Ministry reports 1,318 security personnel killed during war

Israel&#8217;s Defense Ministry said Sunday that 1,318 members of the country&#8217;s security forces have been killed since the war began on October 7, 2023.

The tally includes personnel from the IDF, Israel Police, Shin Bet, Fire and Rescue Services, as well as security coordinators and members of local emergency response teams. The deaths span several fronts, including Gaza, Lebanon and the West Bank.

The ministry also reported that more than 7,150 people have been officially recognized as bereaved relatives. They include 2,143 parents, 355 widows and 880 orphans. A further 3,772 people lost a brother or sister.

Israeli forces have continued to suffer casualties even after the Gaza ceasefire came into effect on October 10, 2025. Some of the incidents have occurred near the Yellow Line, which marks the buffer zone inside the Strip.

IDF Intelligence Chief: 4,000 October 7 Infiltrators Killed, 2,000 Still Remain

(Reuters) — The U.S. military is expanding efforts to counter drones along the southern border, testing technologies intended to detect and stop unmanned aircraft increasingly used by criminal organizations.

The testing took place during Falcon Peak, a U.S. Northern Command exercise held in Arizona in September. At the Yuma Proving Grounds, defense companies demonstrated equipment capable of identifying, tracking and engaging small drones, including radar systems, interceptor aircraft and automated weapons.

Military officials say many of the drones encountered near the border are commercially available models that criminals have adapted for surveillance. The aircraft can be used to monitor law-enforcement activity and support smuggling and human-trafficking operations.

Brigadier General Brian Filler, deputy commander for operations at Joint Task Force Southern Border, said the military recorded 378 drone incursions during the preceding 30 days, with the number continuing to rise.

&#8220;We are seeing largely commercial off-the-shelf available drones,&#8221; Filler said. He noted that surveillance cameras are commonly attached to the aircraft and that drones are frequently spotted near cross-border activity.

The military has already begun using directed-energy systems against cartel drones. Earlier in September, officials said lasers deployed along the southern border had brought down 11 drones since the technology was introduced in August.

Drawing Lessons From Ukraine

The Pentagon is also looking to Ukraine, where the extensive use of drones during the war with Russia has produced rapid advances in both offensive and defensive technology.

U.S. officials emphasize that cartel drones are far less sophisticated than many of the systems deployed on battlefields in Ukraine and the Middle East. Nevertheless, they view the border as a useful real-world environment for evaluating counter-drone equipment, training personnel and determining how the technology performs under operational conditions.

Falcon Peak also demonstrated the military&#8217;s increasing reliance on venture-backed defense companies. Since Russia&#8217;s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, significant private investment has flowed into firms developing drones, autonomous systems and counter-drone technology, including Anduril, Shield AI and Saronic.

Among the systems demonstrated was Anduril&#8217;s Ghost drone. Other equipment included Teledyne FLIR&#8217;s radar and camera-based detection technology, Allen Control Systems&#8217; automated &#8220;Bullfrog&#8221; counter-drone gun and an interceptor drone marketed by Powerus.

Powerus became a publicly traded company after completing a merger with a firm backed by the sons of President Donald Trump.

Military planners say they want to reproduce the speed with which Ukrainian forces modify and improve their systems in response to battlefield developments.

Brigadier General Matt Ross said the U.S. military has been impressed by Ukraine&#8217;s ability to adapt technology rapidly.

&#8220;We tend to look at Ukraine and we say, &#8216;I am so impressed with how quickly they can adapt on a daily or weekly basis,'&#8221; Ross told reporters.

He added: &#8220;What we should really do is replicate that process.&#8221;

The effort reflects a broader push by the U.S. military to accelerate development and deployment of counter-drone capabilities as inexpensive unmanned aircraft become increasingly common threats in both military and security environments.

U.S. Army Tests New Counter-Drone Systems as Cartel Activity Grows Along Mexican Border

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used Israel’s state memorial ceremony for the October 7 massacre to deliver a warning to Hamas, saying the terrorist organization will not be permitted to rule Gaza and that those responsible for the attack and the captivity of Israeli hostages will ultimately face consequences.

&#8220;There will be no Hamas rule in Gaza. Anyone who was involved in the attack against us and held our hostages is living on borrowed time. Every day, we settle accounts with these despicable murderers,&#8221; Netanyahu said.

President Isaac Herzog used his remarks at the ceremony to focus not only on those killed and abducted on October 7, but also on the warnings that preceded the attack and the divisions that continue to challenge Israeli society.

Herzog recalled the families who lost loved ones, describing the effort he and his wife, Michal, have made to understand the lives of those who died beyond the circumstances of their deaths.

“Over the past three years, Michal and I have tried, every single day, to listen, to learn, to honor and to remember all your loved ones,” he said, addressing the bereaved families. “To read about them, to learn the paths of their lives, to hear about their successes, their joys and their dreams, and to come to know the full and varied lives they left behind.”

He said the country must share the grief of those families while remembering the people who were lost and recognizing that their lives cannot be restored.

“We ask to share your pain, to shed tears with you, to bow our heads in their memory and, together with all of Israel, to remember and remind ourselves of what we have lost, all of us, and what we can never bring back.”

The warnings before October 7

A significant portion of Herzog’s speech centered on the female observation soldiers stationed at Nahal Oz, whose responsibility was to monitor developments along the Gaza border.

He described them as the “eyes of the IDF, and of the state” and emphasized their ability to detect changes in the area.

“The ones who watched and warned…And they knew how to recognize when it changed.”

According to Herzog, the observers had noticed unusual activity before the October 7 attack and repeatedly reported what they were seeing. The problem, he said, was that the information never became a complete assessment that prompted an adequate response.

“We heard how, before the October 7 disaster, they sensed that something was happening in the sector. They saw. They reported. They raised the alarm. But no one assembled it into a complete picture.”

Herzog also recalled a message that the observers had written on a shelter wall at Nahal Oz months before the massacre. In retrospect, he said, the words reflected the complacency that preceded the attack.

&#8220;One of them was written with a cynical, clear-eyed perspective. In hindsight, the message takes on a chilling meaning. It captures the story of an entire country, the story of Israel on the eve of the war. In bright pink letters, they wrote: ‘Look how calmly she walks, as though Gaza were not right next to her.’”

The president described the events of the morning of October 7, saying that at 6:29 a.m. the observers saw terrorists approaching the border and immediately communicated the military warning for an infiltration.

“in steady voices, they announced the military code for a terrorist infiltration into Israel: &#8216;Turkish Horse’.”

Seven of the observers were taken hostage. Six eventually returned alive, while Cpl. Noa Marciano was killed during her captivity.

“Cpl. Noa Marciano, of blessed memory, was murdered by the Hamas terrorists while she was in captivity,” he stated.

Herzog praised all of the observers for continuing to perform their duties despite the danger they faced.

“All of them carried out their duties with professionalism, courage and self-sacrifice. They were, in the words of the prophet Ezekiel, ‘a watchman for the house of Israel.’”

He also paid tribute to the 53 IDF soldiers killed while defending Nahal Oz and to the hundreds of other people killed throughout southern Israel.

Remembering the hostages and those forced from their homes

Herzog said Israel has endured enormous losses during the war, including the displacement of civilians from communities near the fighting. At the same time, he argued that the country has demonstrated an ability to recover and rebuild, reaching what he described as “unimaginable heights.”

Among the developments he highlighted was the return of the hostages, while acknowledging that some came home to begin rehabilitation and others were returned for burial.

“We brought the hostages home. Some returned for rehabilitation and to rebuild their lives, while others, to our profound sorrow, were brought back for burial in Israel,” he said.

The president described the people killed during the conflict as coming from every segment of Israeli society.

“In this difficult campaign, we have lost so many, to our sorrow. The finest of our sons and daughters. Extraordinary young women and men, as well as people who had lived many years, built families, homes and communities,” he said.

“From every community in Israel. From every part of Israel. From every political position, religion, belief, camp and way of life.”

A warning about Israel&#8217;s internal divisions

Herzog then turned from the battlefield to Israel&#8217;s domestic political climate, arguing that the country must take seriously the warning signs emerging within its own society.

He called on Israelis to examine what is happening internally rather than focusing exclusively on external threats.

&#8220;In these days, in the midst of an election campaign, we must look at and heed the glaring warning lights, those that signal dangerous disputes and deep division,” Herzog stated. “Of course we are permitted to disagree, and indeed we have a duty to debate important matters and the great questions.”

But, he cautioned, political disagreements cannot erase the fact that Israelis remain members of the same society and will have to live, serve and build the country&#8217;s future together.

“But we must remember: The person who disagrees with you today will live here with you tomorrow as well. Their children will grow up in the same country as your children. They will be called upon to protect it together, and to build its future together.”

&#8216;We will shine again&#8217;

Herzog concluded by returning to the themes of remembrance and hope, invoking the words of Hatikvah and arguing that Israel&#8217;s future remains dependent on the choices Israelis make now.

“In our national anthem, Hatikvah, we sing: ‘An eye still gazes toward Zion.’ The gaze watches, and the heart hopes. Because we still have much to hope for. Because the future that awaits us here can and must be great. It depends only on us.”

He then recalled another message written by the Nahal Oz observers on the same shelter wall. Unlike the earlier warning about Gaza, this one expressed optimism.

“Everything will be all right. We will shine again.”

Herzog said those words have a different meaning after the events of the past three years and cannot simply be repeated without acknowledging what happened to the women who wrote them.

“I read those words and think of the women who wrote them. Brave soldiers who had so much ahead of them. The lives still waiting for them. After the past three years, we cannot repeat those words as though nothing happened. We cannot.”

At the same time, he said the message can still serve as an expression of the desire to preserve and rebuild life.

&#8220;But we can carry those words with us. The love of life contained within them.”

Herzog ended with a pledge to remember the dead, investigate the failures surrounding October 7, and continue building Israel&#8217;s future.

“We will not forget those we lost. We will not relent from our duty to investigate and to correct. And we will not give up on the lives that can still be built here. I believe in us. We will shine again.”

Netanyahu Warns Hamas Leaders and Hostage-Takers They Are Living on ‘Borrowed Time’ at October 7 Memorial

A live grenade-launcher round was accidentally fired toward a building containing nine IDF soldiers during a training exercise at the Paratroopers Brigade&#8217;s training base near Shomria roughly a week and a half ago, according to a report by Walla published Monday.

The incident took place during an urban-combat drill. A soldier mistakenly fired live ammunition from a grenade launcher at a structure occupied by nine troops who were acting as a simulated enemy force.

&#8220;The shot was mistakenly fired with live ammunition at a building where there was a simulated enemy force that included nine soldiers. If the soldier who fired had put the ammunition through the window, he could have hit the force, and it could have ended in disaster,&#8221; a source in the 98th Division told Walla.

No soldiers were injured in the incident. Military authorities have not yet determined why live ammunition was used as part of the exercise.

Following the mishap, 98th Division commander Brig.-Gen. Mani Liberty ordered an investigation to establish what led to the live-fire incident.

No casualties as IDF investigates training mishap

&#8220;The exercise was stopped immediately; there were no casualties in the incident. The incident is being investigated,&#8221; the IDF Spokesperson&#8217;s Unit said in response.

The latest incident comes amid several other safety-related mishaps involving IDF personnel during training and operational activity this year.

In January, a Gefen Battalion cadet suffered serious injuries when a grenade detonated during a drill at the IDF Officers School. In response, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir ordered a temporary suspension of training exercises involving grenade throwing in built-up areas while the circumstances were investigated.

Another incident occurred in July, when a Golani Brigade officer fired a mortar during operations in the Gaza Strip despite not being formally certified to operate the weapon. Military sources said the officer had violated Ground Forces safety regulations.

The IDF said at the time that the mortar fire did not put troops at risk and that procedures were clarified following the incident.

DALLAS — For generations, New York has stood at the center of American finance. Texas, however, is increasingly positioning itself as a serious challenger, with Dallas emerging as the focal point of an effort to build a powerful financial industry of its own.

At the heart of that push is the Texas Stock Exchange, a Dallas-based marketplace designed to give companies another option for listing shares and accessing investors. Backers see the exchange as a key part of an effort to establish Texas as a major destination for financial activity, helping fuel the emergence of what supporters have dubbed &#8220;Y&#8217;all Street.&#8221;

The initiative comes as Texas continues attracting companies, investment and financial institutions from across the country. The state has experienced significant corporate expansion in recent years, strengthening its reputation as a business-friendly alternative to more established financial centers.

Former Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, who serves as a strategic advisor and member of the Texas Stock Exchange, said the transformation is already taking shape.

&#8220;Texas is really becoming the economic center of gravity in America,&#8221; Hensarling told Fox News Digital during an interview at the Texas Stock Exchange&#8217;s headquarters.

He contrasted Texas&#8217; approach with what he described as an increasingly difficult environment for capital in New York.

&#8220;As New York is increasingly shoving capital out, Texas is saying, &#8216;You&#8217;re welcome here,'&#8221; he said. &#8220;We put out the welcome mat, whereas New York, capital isn&#8217;t really made to feel at home, and capital wants to go where it&#8217;s made to feel at home.&#8221;

Hensarling said Texas&#8217; economic appeal has been strengthened by policies intended to encourage business activity, arguing that the state has evolved beyond simply being a favorable location for companies to operate.

He pointed to changes enacted by state lawmakers as another factor behind Texas&#8217; growing corporate appeal.

&#8220;Texas has been a great place to do business for decades, but increasingly it&#8217;s a great place to headquarter your business,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Over the last couple of legislative sessions, because of laws passed, it&#8217;s a great place to incorporate your business.&#8221;

Hensarling said establishing a stock exchange was the remaining element needed to give companies a complete path for doing business in the state, from incorporation through going public.

&#8220;The last piece of that puzzle was the Texas Stock Exchange,&#8221; Hensarling said. &#8220;It&#8217;s now making Texas the best place to list your company and to go public.&#8221;

The exchange is developing alongside a much broader expansion of business and financial investment across Texas. Several major corporations have relocated their headquarters to the state, while large financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Charles Schwab and Bank of America have increased their presence there.

Supporters view those developments as evidence of a broader movement of businesses and capital away from traditional financial centers and toward states offering lower taxes and less regulation.

New York, however, remains the country&#8217;s dominant financial center by a substantial margin. It is home to the world&#8217;s largest stock exchange, major investment banks and exceptionally deep capital markets, giving Wall Street advantages that Texas will not easily replicate.

Still, the growing financial presence in Dallas is changing the competitive landscape. A new stock exchange, expanding corporate headquarters and the arrival or expansion of major financial firms have given Texas its most significant opportunity yet to challenge New York&#8217;s position.

Whether the &#8220;Y&#8217;all Street&#8221; concept can eventually compete directly with Wall Street remains uncertain. But Texas&#8217; rapid economic growth and expanding financial infrastructure have made the state an increasingly important player in American finance.

For Hensarling, the direction is unmistakable.

&#8220;Texas is really becoming the economic center of gravity in America,&#8221; he said.

Texas Takes Aim at Wall Street as Dallas Builds a New Financial Powerhouse

(CBS) &#8211; A California real estate agent has been arrested on suspicion of conducting surveillance on relatives of Taiwan&#8217;s president on behalf of Chinese government officials, according to federal investigators.

Wanying &#8220;Heather&#8221; Zhang was apprehended Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport as she prepared to depart for Shanghai. Federal authorities charged her with acting as an agent of a foreign government without registering with the U.S. government.

The investigation centers on an alleged operation in September 2025 involving the collection of information about Ting-Yu Lai, the son of Taiwanese President Ching-Te Lai, who resides in the United States.

According to a federal criminal complaint, Zhang and an unidentified male associate traveled to the Seattle area, rented a vehicle and went to a residence associated with the president&#8217;s son. Investigators allege that the pair photographed and recorded members of his family.

The FBI believes the information could have been intended to provide Beijing with potential leverage over Taiwan&#8217;s leadership. Special Agent Kevin Holt explained the concern in the October 3 court filing: &#8220;If the PRC [People&#8217;s Republic of China] wish to obtain leverage over the President of Taiwan during any potential conflict, the location and pictures of the close relatives of a high-ranking Taiwanese government official, including pictures of their homes and cars, could be useful to the PRC,&#8221;

The alleged surveillance reportedly took place on September 1, 2025, after Zhang and the unidentified individual flew from Las Vegas to Seattle and obtained a black Nissan Rogue.

Security footage from a neighboring property became part of the investigation. According to the complaint, the recording appears to capture the two individuals filming Ting-Yu, his wife and their child when they returned to their residence.

Investigators also allege that Zhang communicated updates to a Chinese government contact through WeChat. Among the messages cited in the complaint were: &#8220;Saw him. Young male. It&#8217;s that young one,&#8221; and &#8220;I am videorecording,&#8221; followed by vehicle registration information.

The FBI says the communications were recovered through a search of Zhang&#8217;s iCloud account. Holt wrote that the evidence indicated Zhang maintained contact with multiple individuals she appeared to recognize as representatives of the Chinese government.

The complaint describes an alleged recruitment process beginning several months before the Seattle trip. In June 2025, a former classmate reportedly introduced Zhang to a Chinese official. The connection allegedly stemmed from her studies at Beijing&#8217;s University of International Relations, an institution the FBI agent said has close ties to China&#8217;s Ministry of State Security.

During a subsequent visit to China, Zhang allegedly met the official in a private room she had reserved in Changsha. Investigators believe the meeting was when the surveillance assignment was arranged.

Later communications allegedly showed Zhang discussing preparations for the Seattle trip. In one message, she wrote: &#8220;I can take care of this thing,&#8221;

On August 26, she reportedly informed the official: &#8220;I will be busy with work in L.A. this week. I will probably go to Seattle next week,&#8221; The official responded: &#8220;Ok. Thank you for your hard work,&#8221; according to the complaint.

Zhang, 34, is a licensed real estate agent employed by JC Pacific Capital Inc. Her online professional profile lists approximately 130 property transactions and listings in the Los Angeles region and nearby communities.

Her husband, Edric Ding, who works in the same real estate business, told CBS News after being contacted Sunday: &#8220;I don&#8217;t know anything yet,&#8221; He declined to discuss the matter further. It was not immediately known whether Zhang had retained an attorney.

The president&#8217;s son and Taiwan&#8217;s strategic position

Ting-Yu Lai is an engineer who completed his higher education in the United States. His academic credentials include degrees from Case Western Reserve University and Johns Hopkins University, followed by a doctorate in bioengineering from the University of Washington.

Taiwanese media have reported that he met his wife, Hsiao Chen, while completing his doctoral studies. They married in 2018 and had a child in the United States in 2020. He is now employed by Dutch electronics manufacturer Philips.

The allegations emerge against the backdrop of longstanding tensions between Beijing and Taipei. Taiwan operates independently, maintains its own government and rejects Beijing&#8217;s claims of sovereignty over the island. China, meanwhile, continues to regard Taiwan as part of its territory.

The island&#8217;s geopolitical importance extends beyond its political status. Its location near major international maritime routes and its central role in advanced semiconductor manufacturing make it particularly significant to global security and the technology industry.

Taiwan&#8217;s consulate was contacted for comment regarding the investigation.

Previous cases involving alleged Chinese operations in America

Zhang&#8217;s arrest comes amid several prominent U.S. investigations into suspected Chinese government activities targeting individuals and organizations inside the country.

One notable case involved Shujun Wang, who prosecutors said secretly gathered intelligence on a Chinese pro-democracy organization in Queens, New York, for China&#8217;s Ministry of State Security over approximately 17 years. Wang was convicted of acting as an unauthorized foreign agent in 2024.

Authorities also prosecuted individuals connected to an alleged unofficial Chinese police facility in Manhattan. Two people were arrested in April 2023 in connection with the operation, which investigators said was used to monitor Chinese nationals and dissidents.

Another focus of federal investigations has been Operation Fox Hunt, a Chinese government initiative that U.S. authorities say is used to locate Chinese nationals abroad and pressure certain individuals to return to China.

Quanzhong An, whom prosecutors described as a leading figure in the American operation, was sentenced in March 2025 following allegations that he participated in efforts to intimidate a Chinese dissident into returning to China.

In a separate California investigation, former Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang was charged in May with acting on behalf of the Chinese government. She acknowledged accepting money to promote Beijing&#8217;s positions in the United States, including through an online article disputing allegations of &#8220;forced labor&#8221; in China.

FBI Arrests Alleged Chinese Intelligence Operative at LAX Over Surveillance of Taiwanese President’s Son

The White House is monitoring reports of a suspected plague case in Russia, along with quarantines imposed after the death of a woman who worked at an anti-plague research facility, according to a Trump administration official who spoke to Axios on Sunday.

Russian health officials have responded to the death with precautionary measures but have not confirmed that the woman was infected with plague.

The Trump administration &#8220;is aware, monitoring the outbreak, and assessing options,&#8221; the administration official said.

The incident began Sept. 25, when 28-year-old Daria Shipilova, an employee at an anti-plague research institute in Russia&#8217;s Irkutsk region, reportedly broke a test tube containing the pathogen that causes pneumonic plague.

Shipilova was hospitalized four days later, on Sept. 29, suffering from severe pneumonia. She died overnight between Oct. 1 and Oct. 2.

Following her death, authorities ordered quarantines at several medical facilities in the region and placed nearly 200 people who had been in contact with Shipilova under medical observation.

Irkutsk Gov. Igor Kobzev said none of those under observation had developed symptoms and that their tests had come back negative.

Russian media have reported that Shipilova may have contracted pneumonic plague, but health officials have yet to confirm that diagnosis.

Russia&#8217;s public health agency said Shipilova suffered from &#8220;pneumonia of unknown etiology.&#8221; The agency added that subsequent testing detected no microorganisms associated with her work and said the region&#8217;s epidemiological situation remained stable.

Plague is a serious bacterial infection that can be life-threatening, but the disease is treatable with antibiotics when medical care is provided promptly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

White House spokespeople directed questions to the State Department. The State Department had not responded to a request for comment.

White House Watches Suspected Plague Case in Russia as Authorities Impose Quarantines

Authorities continued searching Sunday off the Massachusetts coast for a medical aircraft carrying six people that disappeared while flying from Bermuda to Boston. The U.S. Coast Guard said crews were preparing to deploy sonar equipment to examine the ocean floor for possible wreckage.

The Federal Aviation Administration alerted the Coast Guard around 2 a.m. Saturday after losing contact with the Gulfstream G100 over the Atlantic Ocean. The Canadian-registered aircraft was carrying four Canadians and two Bermudian nationals. Later Saturday, search teams discovered a “debris field” near Nantucket, Coast Guard Northeast District Rear Adm. Matt Lake said during a news conference Sunday.

The Coast Guard, New York National Guard’s Air Rescue Wing and Massachusetts authorities have covered approximately 2,840 square miles (7,356 square kilometers) using aircraft, helicopters, boats and cutters.

“This is a large and demanding search area,” Lake said.

The debris field lies in waters approximately 80 to 90 feet deep (24 to 27 meters). Lake said sonar equipment was being prepared to help crews search the seabed.

Authorities have also been keeping the families of those aboard the aircraft informed about developments, Lake said. Coast Guard Capt. John McTamney, the Northeast District&#8217;s chief of response, added that weather conditions have not disrupted the operation.

“We’ll continue to search and saturate the area until we’re at the point where we are confident that if there were any survivors remaining on the surface of the water, we would have found them,” McTamney said.

According to a statement from Bermuda airport operator Skyport, the aircraft departed L.F. Wade International Airport on a nighttime flight to Massachusetts with four crew members and two passengers aboard.

Air traffic control recordings suggest the aircraft may have encountered serious problems as it approached the coast, with a storm looming ahead shortly before it disappeared.

The pilot reportedly experienced electrical problems and declared an emergency, according to audio posted by LiveATC.net. During the exchange, an air traffic controller can be heard asking: “Roger, you said you’re coming in blind. Is that what you said?”

Mary Schiavo, a former Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Transportation, believes the aircraft may have lost its navigation instruments as a storm moved across its path. Preliminary data from flight-tracking service FlightRadar24 also shows the jet descending rapidly from approximately 24,000 feet to around 10,000 feet.

“Something bad happened with this big drop, and they flew into this big storm. It’s a terrible place to have a loss of your instruments and be flying blind,” said Schiavo, who is an aviation attorney. “It’s very easy to get disoriented and not know if you’re turning, climbing, descending, etc.”

Canada&#8217;s Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said his department was monitoring the incident and coordinating with authorities involved in search-and-rescue efforts. He shared the update on X.

Medical Plane Went Down Off Nantucket as Coast Guard Searches for Wreckage

Britain’s Green Party voted Sunday to classify Zionism as a form of racism, prompting sharp condemnation from British Jewish organizations and Israel, whose government said the decision effectively makes the party &#8220;a body that gives legitimacy to terrorism&#8221;.

The party, which won about 6% of the national vote in the 2024 election, described Zionism as &#8220;an ethnonationalist political project.&#8221; Delegates also reaffirmed their demand that Britain’s Labour government halt all arms trade with Israel.

&#8220;The motion also restates the Green Party&#8217;s backing for the right to self-determination and calls for the establishment of a single democratic state throughout historic Palestine,&#8221; the party said in a statement.

Zionism remains a deeply disputed political concept. It played a central role in the establishment of modern Israel during the 20th century, while Jewish organizations commonly describe it as supporting the Jewish people&#8217;s right to national self-determination.

Green Party members approved the motion by 1,022 votes to 813, despite resistance from a number of senior party figures. Leader Zack Polanski, who is campaigning for a seat in Parliament in Thursday’s election in the London constituency previously represented by former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, did not participate in the vote.

British Jewish organizations strongly criticized the decision.

&#8220;The Green Party has made antisemitism party policy and become a racist party,&#8221; the Movement for Progressive Judaism said. The organization also cautioned that the participation of some Jews in supporting the motion does not prevent the policy from being used to discriminate against other Jews.

Israel also responded forcefully. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar decided to bar Polanski from entering Israel, according to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which announced the decision Sunday on X.

The ministry said the Green Party resolution &#8220;constitutes a clear antisemitic text according to the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) definition, as it denies the Jewish people’s right to self-determination,&#8221;.

Mothin Ali, the Green Party’s deputy leader and a supporter of the measure, said the extensive Palestinian death toll during Israel’s war against Hamas was central to the debate. The conflict followed Hamas’ deadly 2023 attack at an Israeli music festival.

&#8220;The motion defines Zionism quite clearly. It defines it as an ethnonationalist movement. It defines it as ethnic cleansing. It defines it as genocide,&#8221; Ali said.

The British government has characterized actions by Israeli settlers in Judea and Samaria as amounting to ethnic cleansing, while maintaining that determinations over whether other Israeli conduct constitutes genocide should be made by courts. Israel rejects allegations of both ethnic cleansing and genocide.

Israel called on Britain’s other political parties to denounce the Green Party’s decision.

&#8220;The Greens have adopted not only the green of Hamas, but also its ideology: the elimination of the State of Israel through armed struggle,&#8221; it said.

Polanski and other senior Green Party officials defended their position, saying they would &#8220;continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government,&#8221; while maintaining that &#8220;there is no conflict between supporting the rights of Palestinians and the rights of Jewish people.&#8221;

The vote places the Green Party at the center of an increasingly contentious British political debate over Israel, Palestinian rights, antisemitism and the meaning of Zionism.

Britain’s Green Party Declares Zionism Racist, Triggering Fierce Backlash

A dispute over the departure of Iranian diplomats from the United States has intensified, with Washington saying two members of Iran’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly were forced to leave after ignoring a U.S. order, while Tehran strongly disputes the account.

A U.S. official said Saturday that two Iranian delegates remained in New York several days after the State Department had instructed Iran’s UN mission to have its entire delegation leave the country. According to the official, one diplomat departed Friday night and the other left Saturday morning.

&#8220;Secretary Rubio means business. Two more members of the Iranian delegation were found still in New York long after the UN General Assembly had passed. They have now been kicked out of the country,&#8221; the official said.

The reported expulsions followed an earlier dispute over Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s order for Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation to leave New York. U.S. officials said the directive came after indirect negotiations involving Washington and Tehran made little progress. Iran, however, has maintained that its delegation’s departure had been scheduled in advance.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the latest U.S. account in a post on X, saying the Iranian diplomats who attended the General Assembly departed according to schedule.

&#8220;All Iranian diplomats who attended UNGA, except one who departed earlier, left as scheduled,&#8221; Araghchi said.

He also challenged the characterization of the departures as an expulsion.

&#8220;Taking pride in fake diplomat &#8220;expulsion&#8221; is inappropriate for the head of any diplomatic corps. It oozes of desperation and defeat, and is inconsistent with UN host nation obligations.&#8221;

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei separately rejected the U.S. account, calling it an effort to portray the situation as an American diplomatic achievement.

&#8220;In my view, they are trying to manufacture an achievement through lies,&#8221; Baghaei said. &#8220;What they claimed is an absolute falsehood.&#8221;

Baghaei said Iran had communicated its delegation’s travel arrangements to U.S. authorities ahead of time.

&#8220;It was clear from the outset on what date the honorable foreign minister’s delegation would leave New York,&#8221; Baghaei said.

Regarding one of the diplomats who remained in New York longer, Baghaei acknowledged that the individual left following pressure from the United States but disputed that this amounted to an expulsion.

&#8220;Because of the pressure they exerted, yes, that diplomat left New York,&#8221; Baghaei said. &#8220;But in all other respects, we left New York according to the plans that had been made in advance.&#8221;

The Iranian spokesman also accused Washington of violating its responsibilities as host country for the United Nations.

&#8220;This is itself an admission of a violation of the obligations by the host country,&#8221; he said.

&#8220;There is absolutely nothing to be proud of in the US boasting about violating its commitments as the host country,&#8221; Baghaei added.

Baghaei further argued that Washington had failed to prevent Iran’s delegation from participating in the General Assembly and had therefore turned to what he characterized as exaggerated reporting about the diplomats’ departure.

&#8220;It seems that after the US failed to prevent the participation of the Iranian delegation in the United Nations and could not implement its plan to portray Iran as isolated, it has resorted to such very low-level news-making,&#8221; he said.

&#8220;In my view, it is not even worth giving much attention to.&#8221;

The dispute comes as diplomatic tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high and efforts to end the conflict have encountered significant obstacles. Araghchi participated in diplomatic meetings in New York, including indirect contacts involving U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, while regional mediators have continued efforts to bridge differences between the two sides.

The conflicting accounts leave the central issue disputed: U.S. officials characterize the departures of the two remaining diplomats as expulsions after they failed to comply with a departure order, while Iranian officials say their delegation largely followed previously established travel plans and reject Washington’s description of the episode.

(AP) &#8211; The U.S. Air Force has withdrawn all its bombers from RAF Fairford, a military base in England used for operations against Iran, following an investigation into an alleged terrorist plot targeting the installation.

A Pentagon official confirmed Sunday that the aircraft had returned to their permanent bases in the United States. The official, who was not authorized to discuss sensitive military movements, spoke on condition of anonymity.

Military aviation monitoring groups, including the Military Air Tracking Alliance, had tracked B-52 and B-1 bombers operating from RAF Fairford since the start of the Iran war. Observers reported seeing numerous B-1s depart the base Sunday.

The withdrawal comes as President Donald Trump weighs whether to launch further strikes against Iran, despite earlier assurances that the military campaign would last only several weeks.

“We have decisions that I’ll make about Iran. Iran’s been decimated. So the only question is — it’ll either be the easy way, or the hard way,” Trump told reporters Saturday as he left the White House for a rally in Ohio.

The suspected plot has led to six arrests, with all those detained subsequently released on bail. Among them was a dual British-Iranian national arrested in central London last week on suspicion of involvement in a planned attack. The arrest followed a security incident at RAF Fairford in late September.

British authorities have suggested Tehran may have been connected to the incident, an allegation Iran denies. Tehran has previously warned that military bases used to launch attacks against Iranian territory could be considered legitimate targets.

Separately, British officials have accused Iran-linked networks of carrying out arson and other attacks in Britain and abroad, including incidents targeting Jewish communities. Authorities have warned that such activity could expand if tensions in the Middle East persist.

RAF Fairford, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of London, has served as a base for American bombers during several Middle East conflicts over the past decades.

The bomber withdrawal does not signal a broader U.S. military departure from the region. American forces continue to maintain a significant presence in the Middle East, with the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier and the USS Malkin Island amphibious readiness group recently heading there, according to a U.S. official. The ships carry more than 7,000 sailors and about 2,000 Marines, and their arrival could bring the number of U.S. aircraft carriers in the region to three by the end of October.

(Axios) &#8211; Reflection, an AI startup backed by Nvidia, is preparing to release an open-weight model that could add a new competitor to an industry dominated by major U.S. AI companies and increasingly capable Chinese developers.

The company&#8217;s approach could give businesses another option for obtaining advanced AI technology without relying entirely on expensive closed systems operated by companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.

Open-weight technology is attracting significant attention because users can generally download, adapt and deploy these models themselves. That flexibility can make them more difficult to control, but advocates argue that openness and transparency can also provide security and innovation benefits.

People familiar with Reflection&#8217;s plans say its model will initially trail the most sophisticated American systems but should be competitive with leading Chinese open-weight models. The company believes the technology will nevertheless be powerful enough for organizations to develop customized AI applications using their own data.

For certain tasks, combining an open model with specialized company information can produce performance comparable to much more expensive AI systems, particularly when the model is customized for a specific purpose.

Reflection did not comment on the planned release.

The company is pursuing a broader strategy beyond simply releasing an AI model. Its long-term objective includes an &#8220;AI factory,&#8221; in which organizations could combine their private data, AI software and computing resources to create systems designed specifically for their own operations.

That approach could appeal to businesses that do not want sensitive information processed through outside AI services. Financial firms and other organizations that closely protect proprietary data are among the potential users.

Reflection has already started exploring the concept through a sovereign AI factory arrangement with South Korea&#8217;s Shinsegae Group.

The startup has also been working to secure enough computing power for its expansion. Sources say Reflection recently reached agreements with Nebius and SpaceX involving access to Nvidia AI servers.

Before the launch, company representatives have reportedly been speaking with interested groups in Washington and elsewhere about the upcoming model and the AI factory concept.

Reflection CEO Misha Laskin has acknowledged that developing the most powerful AI systems requires considerable time.

&#8220;They&#8217;re kind of like rocket ships,&#8221; Laskin, who previously worked at Google, told CNBC. &#8220;To build a big rocket ship, it takes time.&#8221;

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has promoted a similar vision in which companies combine powerful Nvidia hardware with open AI technology while retaining control over their own information.

That strategy could be particularly important for Western organizations that are uncomfortable relying on sophisticated Chinese AI systems because of potential security concerns. Reflection is among the companies attempting to offer a Western alternative.

Nvidia has been supportive of Reflection&#8217;s effort to develop a major open AI system, according to reports cited in connection with the startup.

Reflection&#8217;s planned release could therefore mark an important development in the competition between open and closed AI. With other Western companies also preparing open-weight offerings, the next phase of the AI race could become considerably more competitive.

Nvidia-Backed AI Startup Reflection Prepares Major Open-Model Challenge

TEL AVIV (NBC) — Early investigative assessments suggest that the Flydubai co-pilot accused of attacking the captain and trying to take control of a passenger aircraft headed for Israel may have acted on his own, rather than on behalf of a terrorist group or foreign government. The assessment was described by several U.S. officials familiar with the inquiry and a former Israeli security official who spoke with NBC News.

The investigation into Wednesday’s incident is still in its initial phase, U.S. officials cautioned, and no final determination has been made.

“The current assessment is that he acted alone. At this point, it appears to be a lone-wolf case influenced by material encountered online,” said Shalom Ben Hanan, a former official with Israel’s domestic security agency, the Shin Bet.

He said investigators would need to complete their work before determining whether any organization or government had played a role.

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates, which are leading the inquiry, said Saturday that the co-pilot struck the captain with a crash ax and then tried to take control of the plane. Officials characterized the episode as an attempted terrorist attack.

The jet was carrying 174 people, primarily Israeli passengers, from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Eyewitnesses and Israeli officials said a far more serious outcome was avoided when crew members and passengers reached the cockpit and subdued the suspect.

Multiple sources from three agencies briefed on the case, along with a Middle Eastern diplomat, identified the suspect to NBC News as Omani citizen Hamam al-Hammami. Officials have not independently confirmed that identification in public.

UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said Saturday that authorities were examining the incident’s “full circumstances, motives, and any links.”

The preliminary assessment came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that investigators were considering whether the suspect had been instructed by another party.

President Donald Trump likewise raised the possibility of Iranian involvement on Thursday and warned that Washington could take further military action against Tehran if Iran were found responsible. But a senior U.S. official briefed earlier on Israel’s investigation told NBC News that authorities had found no evidence Iran directed or took part in the incident.

Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, recounted the episode Friday while being treated at a hospital in Abu Dhabi. He said he sustained significant injuries and noticed the aircraft beginning to descend before he was able to open the cockpit door. That allowed passengers and crew to enter and restrain the attacker.

“I was acting for my own life, but at the same time, I knew I couldn’t let all of them die,” he said in a video call released by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Preliminary Findings: Flydubai Co-Pilot Appears to Have Acted Alone in Midair Terror Attack, Officials Say

(CBS) &#8211; A suspected member of the notorious ShinyHunters hacking group has been detained in Jordan and is reportedly cooperating with U.S. investigators, according to American officials. The group claimed responsibility last month for defacing the FBI&#8217;s website.

Jordanian authorities took Saif al-Din Khader into custody earlier this week, two U.S. officials and another individual familiar with the investigation told CBS News.

ShinyHunters has been tied to several high-profile cyberattacks and data breaches. Last month, the group claimed, without independent public confirmation, that it had obtained personal information belonging to every FBI employee. Investigators have not determined how many individuals may have participated in the alleged breach, a U.S. source told CBS News.

The FBI declined to discuss Khader&#8217;s arrest directly but issued a statement saying: &#8220;the Bureau continues to aggressively investigate the recent Cyber incident allegedly involving ShinyHunters, having already worked with partners to arrest multiple subjects and we will spare no resource in bringing each of the responsible individuals to justice.&#8221;

Reuters was the first to report Khader&#8217;s detention.

In communications posted on the dark web and shared with multiple media outlets last month, ShinyHunters claimed it had stolen between two and three terabytes of data related to FBI employees. The group alleged it exploited a vulnerability in Oracle PeopleSoft, a human resources management platform.

A second suspected member, a 24-year-old Amsterdam resident, was arrested on September 15 on suspicion of belonging to the group, according to Dutch police and the FBI. His arrest came days before ShinyHunters publicly claimed it had breached the FBI&#8217;s employment website. 404 Media first reported the alleged breach on September 22.

Dutch authorities did not release the suspect&#8217;s name, but sources familiar with the investigation confirmed to CBS News that he was Pepijn van der Stap.

In a statement to Reuters, ShinyHunters denied Van der Stap had any connection to the group, saying he had &#8220;no association&#8221; with the organization and describing Dutch police as incompetent.

Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy criticized President Donald Trump on Sunday for posting the personal cellphone number of Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) on Truth Social, saying the president can become hostile in a matter of seconds.

Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, Kennedy described Trump as a “friend,” but made clear that he disagreed with the president’s decision to disclose Cotton’s private phone number.

“He exists loudly. He can be tempestuous,” Kennedy said when discussing Trump’s personality.

“I don’t think he should have given out Tom’s cell phone number. I don’t think that’s going to help convince Tom.”

Kennedy then joked with host Kristen Welker, telling her: “And I have your cellphone number, but I promise not to give it out.”

Trump had targeted Cotton over the Arkansas senator’s opposition to legislation known as the Sunshine Protection Act, which would establish daylight saving time as the permanent national time standard.

“To the Great People of Arkansas, please let your Senator know it would be a GREAT Bipartisan WIN for the United States Senate,” Trump wrote. “Call Tom on his cellphone,” he added, before including Cotton’s phone number in the post.

Kennedy appeared to downplay the significance of the disagreement, suggesting that the dispute over daylight saving time was hardly a major national issue.

“Every now and then, there are disputes in Congress that have existential significance for the future of Western civilization,” Kennedy told Welker. “Daylight saving time is not one of them. Tom Cotton feels strongly about it. Tom is a rock star senator. If you get between him and what’s best for Arkansas, he’ll devour you like a light snack.”

Kennedy Rebukes Trump for Publicly Releasing Senator Tom Cotton’s Cellphone Number

Yemeni government forces, supported by Saudi Arabia, began a military counteroffensive against the Iran-backed Houthi movement on Sunday, seeking to reclaim areas controlled by the rebels. Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen&#8217;s Presidential Leadership Council, announced the operation in a speech.

&#8220;We have exhausted all opportunities for deescalation with the Houthi militias,&#8221; Rashad al-Alimi said.

Why It Matters: A central objective of the campaign is to restore control over the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a strategically important shipping passage for international commerce and Saudi oil shipments.

The Houthis&#8217; control of parts of Yemen&#8217;s Red Sea coastline near the strait has provided the group, along with its Iranian backers, with significant leverage over the United States, its regional Gulf partners and the global economy.

Although Saudi Arabia has urged Washington to become more directly involved, the United States is not currently participating in combat operations against the Houthis. American forces are instead providing intelligence and assistance with targeting, according to U.S. officials.

The Military Campaign: The offensive has been in preparation for several weeks through coordination between Yemen&#8217;s internationally recognized government and Saudi Arabia.

Tens of thousands of troops aligned with the Yemeni government are taking part in the ground campaign.

Saudi Arabia&#8217;s military role primarily involves providing aerial protection for Yemeni forces while carrying out airstrikes against Houthi positions and military assets.

The broader objective is to recapture Sanaa, Yemen&#8217;s capital, which the Houthis have controlled for years.

Meanwhile, the Houthis continued firing missiles toward Saudi Arabia over the weekend, targeting locations that included facilities belonging to state-owned oil company Aramco.

The Political Dilemma: President Donald Trump faces competing considerations as he weighs how much assistance to provide Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a close ally, without drawing the United States into another military conflict in the Middle East.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has also expressed significant concerns about conducting military strikes in Yemen, considering such an operation a potential diversion from its primary focus on Iran, a U.S. official said.

On Thursday, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman spoke by phone with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. During the conversation, he outlined the planned offensive and again requested American airstrikes against Houthi targets, according to the official.

Another U.S. official said Washington &#8220;is not going to take kinetic action for now,&#8221; while emphasizing that the administration could reconsider its position if the military campaign encounters difficulties.

What Happens Next: On Friday, senior members of Trump&#8217;s administration gathered at Camp David for several hours to examine developments in the war with Iran and the escalating conflict in Yemen, as Axios first reported.

It remains uncertain whether the discussions produced any new recommendations for Trump concerning potential American involvement in the Yemen campaign.

(AP) &#8211; Authorities in the United Arab Emirates provided Israel with information about passengers and crew members before a FlyDubai flight bound for Tel Aviv, including the pilots’ names and nationalities, regional officials told The Associated Press on Sunday. The disclosure has raised further questions about how an attacker managed to bypass security screening and board the aircraft.

Following the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the head of the National Security Council to appoint an examiner to investigate “all security aspects regarding foreign civil aviation to Israel.”

As the investigation continues, preliminary findings have exposed several potential security failures. Officials have confirmed that the Omani co-pilot had previously been prohibited from flying in his home country because of concerns about his extremist beliefs. Investigators are also examining how an Omani national was permitted to operate a flight carrying Israeli passengers to Tel Aviv, despite Oman having no diplomatic relations with Israel.

The UAE, which is overseeing the investigation, described Wednesday’s incident as a “terrorist attack.” Authorities said the co-pilot struck the flight’s captain with a crash ax from the cockpit before attempting to seize control of the aircraft as it plunged. The attack brought the plane, carrying 182 people, dangerously close to crashing. The Indian captain eventually managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers and others to enter and overpower the assailant.

Israel Reportedly Found No Security Concerns Among Passengers or Crew

According to the regional officials, Emirati authorities had provided Israel with information about everyone aboard the aircraft, including their nationalities. Israeli authorities did not identify any passengers or crew members as potential security threats, the officials said.

The officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation.

UAE Shared FlyDubai Passenger and Crew Details With Israel Before Attempted Midair Hijacking, Officials Say

The United Arab Emirates is formally treating the attack aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 as terrorism. UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said the co-pilot &#8220;attempted to carry out a terrorist act,&#8221; and investigators are examining whether there was prior planning, outside direction, or additional help.

An initial assessment by Israeli security officials is that the co-pilot acted alone. Investigators are still working to determine whether he had ties to terror groups or accomplices.

According to intelligence and law enforcement officials who spoke with ABC News, the co-pilot, Hamam Al Hammami, a 29-year-old Omani national, had previously been identified as a security risk and suspended from flying at Oman Air.

Australia has opened its own investigation. The Australian Federal Police and the ASIO security service are examining the period Al Hammami spent in Australia, including whether he was radicalized there.

The Associated Press reported that the UAE gave Israel details on the flight crew in advance, including names and nationalities. Israel&#8217;s Transportation Ministry says the pilots&#8217; names were not passed to it and that background checks on foreign pilots are not its responsibility.

Israeli teams are involved in the probe. The Mossad is reported to be leading the Israeli side, and Israel is expected to take part in the co-pilot&#8217;s interrogation. Security officials said a preliminary summary of the Emirati investigation is expected to reach Israel in the coming days.

Reuters recreated the plane&#8217;s dive in a simulator. According to the reconstruction, the autopilot disconnect and a descent of roughly 16,000 feet in about half a minute produced extreme loads, which a flight expert compared to a &#8220;vertical roller coaster.&#8221; The 737 MAX 8 withstood the forces and landed safely.

UAE Calls Flydubai Cockpit Attack Terror; Co-Pilot Was Previously Flagged as a Security Risk

British authorities announced Friday that two Iranian nationals have been charged in connection with an alleged terrorist plot targeting the Jewish community in northern England. Police said the suspected attack was being planned ahead of Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

The suspects, identified as 35-year-old Rahman Salehi and 36-year-old Salam Ahmadyan, face charges of preparing to carry out a terrorist act or assisting another individual in committing one. The charges were announced Friday, which also marked the anniversary of last year&#8217;s deadly attack on a Manchester synagogue.

According to police, the two men allegedly maintained contact with a third party overseas who may be located in Iran and was potentially connected to the suspected plot. Both defendants are scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates&#8217; Court in London on Saturday.

Police Say Suspected Jewish Community Plot Is Unrelated to RAF Fairford Investigation

Counterterrorism officials emphasized that the investigation involving the two Iranian nationals has no connection to a separate suspected terrorist plot involving RAF Fairford, a British air base used by the United States in operations targeting Iran. A dual British-Iranian national was arrested Thursday in connection with that separate investigation.

Vicki Evans of Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) addressed the distinction in a statement, saying: &#8220;While this incident and the investigation into the RAF Fairford incident are not connected in any way, I want to reassure the public that CTP, working with our national security partners, are using the full range of our capabilities to protect the UK from any hostile acts.&#8221;

Several communities across the United States are testing Flock Safety’s Drones-as-First-Responder (DFR) program, which uses remotely controlled aircraft housed in rooftop docking stations. The drones can be dispatched automatically following certain emergency alerts, including 911 calls, license plate reader notifications, and gunshot detection reports. Once airborne, they transmit real-time video to emergency dispatch centers and responding police officers, according to Military.com.

Flock expanded into drone operations after acquiring Aerodome, a company specializing in unmanned aircraft equipped with high-definition cameras, thermal imaging, and other technology. Other businesses are also developing comparable systems. One startup, for example, has promoted a Starlink-enabled emergency response drone designed to maintain connectivity beyond the operating range of its ground station.

Among the jurisdictions that have explored, tested, or entered agreements for Flock&#8217;s DFR technology are Fort Worth, Texas; Castle Rock, Colorado; Dunwoody and Fulton County, Georgia; and Middletown, Connecticut. Fort Worth reported that its two-month trial resulted in 162 drone deployments connected to emergency calls, with an average arrival time of 112 seconds. The aircraft reached the scene before other responders in 76 incidents and helped authorities resolve 11 calls without dispatching officers. City officials emphasized that the drones are sent out in response to specific calls rather than conducting routine aerial patrols. They also said the cameras remain directed toward the horizon while the aircraft travel to an incident.

Flock has faced mounting criticism over concerns involving the potential misuse of its surveillance technology and questions about the security of its systems. The company has maintained that it has never experienced a data breach. Nevertheless, Middletown Police Chief Erik Costa defended the drone program in comments to CT Insider, saying, “The drone’s purpose is not surveillance; it’s first response.” He further stated that recordings from Middletown “would not be shared…outside the building unless there is a search warrant” and that footage not needed for an investigation “would be erased within 30 days.”

Several other municipalities have opted against adopting the technology, despite receiving proposals from Flock. Berkeley, California, rejected a $2 million package that would have added drones, additional cameras, and software to its existing license plate surveillance network. Bridgeport, Connecticut, also declined a proposed $500,000 lease covering two emergency response drones. In Middletown, the mayor ultimately declined to finalize the agreement, even after the city had authorized an earlier trial. Privacy remains a major factor behind the opposition, particularly concerns that information collected locally could become accessible to federal agencies without a warrant. These objections have persisted despite Flock&#8217;s statements that it does not collaborate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Although emergency personnel see potential benefits in using drones to reach incidents more quickly, opposition to Flock&#8217;s expansion appears to center largely on broader concerns about the company&#8217;s practices and the agencies using its technology, rather than the aircraft themselves. Questions about data retention, access, oversight, and the possibility of information being shared with outside authorities remain central to the debate. Without greater public confidence and clear safeguards addressing these issues, surveillance technology is likely to encounter resistance whether cameras are installed along roadways or carried by drones flying overhead.

Flock’s Camera-Equipped Drones Take to the Skies as Emergency Responders, Raising New Privacy Questions

(Gothamist) Brooklyn residents with outstanding arrest warrants tied to minor summonses will have an opportunity to resolve their cases without being taken into custody at a special event scheduled for Saturday. District Attorney Eric Gonzalez is reviving the initiative as the number of quality-of-life citations issued by the NYPD has increased, adding to a substantial backlog of unresolved cases.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bridge Street AME Church on Stuyvesant Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant. It is intended for people who received criminal summonses for minor violations but failed to appear or respond by the required deadline.

Gonzalez described the types of violations involved, saying, “They&#8217;re for really low-level offenses: being in the park after dark, walking a dog off a leash, maybe smoking a cigarette where you&#8217;re not allowed to smoke,” he told Gothamist

The renewed initiative comes against the backdrop of expanded NYPD enforcement targeting minor public-order violations. City figures show that officers issued more than 220,000 civil and criminal summonses during the latest fiscal year, a 13% increase over the previous year.

However, the increased enforcement has also drawn criticism over how tickets are issued. Earlier reporting found that hearing officers dismissed nearly half of the civil violation citations reviewed, frequently because of procedural mistakes or improper service. Critics argue that the volume of dismissed tickets raises concerns about the effectiveness and cost of the enforcement campaign.

Dawn Ryan, who leads the Legal Aid Society&#8217;s Brooklyn trial office, questioned the circumstances behind the growing need for warrant-clearing events.

“The need for an initiative like this … raises serious questions about why so many of these summonses are being issued in the first place,” she said.

The NYPD offered a different perspective. Department spokesperson Bradley Weekes said criminal summons activity this year is virtually unchanged compared with the same period last year. He added that officers are responding to quality-of-life complaints submitted by residents through 311.

Mayor Mamdani&#8217;s administration also expressed support for Saturday&#8217;s effort. City Hall spokesperson Sam Raskin said the program could help remove legal obstacles that affect residents&#8217; everyday lives.

“Our administration commends District Attorney Gonzalez’s efforts to help New Yorkers clear old summons warrants, which can make it harder for New Yorkers&#8217; to get a job, obtain housing or apply for citizenship, and can deter people from engaging with law enforcement,” Raskin said.

Concerns Over Disparities and Public Safety

Gonzalez said he is concerned about the distribution of quality-of-life enforcement, particularly its impact on economically disadvantaged communities and people of color. Although he said he does not intend to second-guess individual NYPD decisions, he questioned whether the burden of these citations falls disproportionately on certain populations.

“I have always been concerned about the racial disparities in these tickets. You know, 85% of these tickets are given to people of color. That has not changed over the years,” Gonzalez said. “The enforcement is often done in the poorest neighborhoods, where the cost of the tickets have the biggest affordability issues for folks.”

He also raised concerns about what happens when residents ignore criminal summonses. A missed response deadline can result in an arrest warrant, potentially exposing someone to arrest during a later encounter with police, including an otherwise routine traffic stop.

The DA argued that outstanding warrants can create a cycle in which residents become reluctant to approach or cooperate with law enforcement because they fear being arrested.

“ I think it keeps us less safe, quite frankly, if people try to avoid the police or prosecutors because they have a summons warrant,” he said.

&#8216;Begin Again&#8217; Returns After Eight-Year Hiatus

The Saturday gathering marks the return of the DA&#8217;s “Begin Again” program, which is designed to help people resolve outstanding warrants stemming from criminal summonses. A similar initiative was discontinued in 2018.

The DA&#8217;s office says restarting the program is “urgently needed,” citing the large number of unresolved warrants throughout New York City associated with unpaid tickets.

The effort brings together the DA&#8217;s office, the Legal Aid Society, local judges and elected officials. Participants will be able to consult with attorneys at no charge before having their cases reviewed in a temporary courtroom established inside the church.

Judges will examine outstanding warrants and any related penalties. Gonzalez expects many of the cases to be dismissed following judicial review.

“ Most of these tickets will get dismissed by the judges, as would happen if you went to regular court,” he said.

According to Gonzalez, his office has contacted residents in surrounding neighborhoods who have outstanding warrants related to criminal quality-of-life summonses. He emphasized that attending Saturday&#8217;s event will not result in participants being arrested.

He further stated that undocumented immigrants with outstanding warrants connected to these summonses will not face immigration consequences for participating in the program.

Brooklyn DA Restarts Warrant Amnesty Program Amid Growing NYPD Ticket Enforcement

The US military is preparing for the possibility of sending thousands of additional personnel and naval assets to the Middle East in the coming weeks, according to a Friday report by The Washington Post.

The Pentagon is considering moving as many as three aircraft carrier strike groups, along with their accompanying warships, into the region. The proposed deployment would give American commanders greater flexibility in managing military operations as the conflict with Iran continues.

Administration weighs its next move in the Iran war

The discussions come as President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration evaluates its next steps in a war that has now stretched into its eighth month. The prolonged conflict has generated growing dissatisfaction among Americans and contributed to economic disruption around the world, The Washington Post reported.

The potential reinforcement could involve approximately 20,000 additional military personnel, as many as 150 fighter aircraft, and multiple destroyers equipped to conduct missile strikes and defend against incoming attacks.

Among the aircraft carriers being considered are the USS George Washington, which was most recently operating in the Arabian Sea; the USS George H.W. Bush, currently in the Indian Ocean; and the USS Theodore Roosevelt, according to The Washington Post, citing an earlier Wall Street Journal report.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt was recently sent to San Diego and would need to cross the Pacific Ocean before reaching the Middle East.

The military planning is taking place as Trump considers the possibility of resuming attacks against Iran after November&#8217;s midterm elections, The Washington Post reported, citing US officials who spoke anonymously.

During an interview published by Time magazine on Thursday, Trump indicated that expanding the bombing campaign after the midterms was “possible,” according to the report.

Approximately 50,000 US troops already stationed in the region

About 50,000 American service members are currently deployed throughout the Middle East, US officials told The Washington Post.

The Navy recently sent the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group to the region. The three-vessel formation carries Marines and sailors who departed from California.

Another amphibious formation, the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, has already been operating in the Middle East for several months. That deployment includes more than 4,000 Marines and sailors, according to officials cited in the report.

If Trump ultimately decides not to intensify the war, the newly dispatched ships could instead serve as replacements for vessels that have remained in the region for an extended period, officials said.

The extended military campaign has placed considerable demands on the Pentagon, with reports of declining troop morale and increasing maintenance requirements for naval vessels.

The financial and human costs of the conflict have also continued to mount. The war has cost the United States billions of dollars, left more than 800 American service members wounded, and resulted in at least 19 military deaths, according to the report.

Report: Pentagon Weighs Major Naval Buildup in Middle East as Trump Considers Renewed Iran Strikes

Saudi Arabia is preparing a military campaign against Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen, with plans reportedly including an advance along the coast to reopen the strategically important Red Sea shipping corridor or a wider assault involving several battlefronts. Regional and Western officials familiar with the discussions spoke to Reuters about the preparations.

The offensive could begin within the coming weeks. Yemeni forces operating under Saudi oversight are expected to carry out the ground operations, with Saudi aircraft providing air support, according to six individuals familiar with the plans.

Although Washington is already sharing intelligence with Riyadh to assist its military activities in Yemen, several regional and European countries have also provided defensive military assistance to Saudi Arabia. However, these partners are not expected to participate directly in the fighting, officials said. They spoke anonymously because of the sensitive security discussions.

Saudi Arabia first became directly involved in Yemen&#8217;s civil war in 2015, leading an Arab coalition supporting the internationally recognized government after Houthi forces captured the capital, Sanaa. A ceasefire reached in 2022 largely remained in place until this year, when the Houthis began launching missiles and drones at Saudi shipping and energy infrastructure amid the wider conflict involving Iran.

One of the principal goals of the proposed operation is to reverse recent Houthi territorial advances. Last month, the group moved south along Yemen&#8217;s coastline and took control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, according to officials familiar with the preparations, including representatives from Yemen and Gulf states and Western diplomats. The planned effort has not previously been reported.

More Than 100,000 Yemeni Fighters Could Be Mobilized

Saudi officials are examining two potential military strategies, according to Gulf and Yemeni sources. One would concentrate on retaking the territory surrounding the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The alternative would involve a much larger campaign, coordinating offensives across several areas, including Al-Bayda, Marib, Taiz and Al-Jawf.

Depending on the operation&#8217;s size, more than 100,000 Yemeni fighters could potentially be assembled for the campaign, officials said.

Representatives of the Saudi and Yemeni governments, the Houthis and the US military did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Bab al-Mandab is the southern gateway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. It serves as a critical international shipping passage linking Mediterranean markets with Asia. Its importance has increased this year because the Iran conflict has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, making alternative maritime routes particularly significant.

Saudi Arabia reportedly believes that meaningful peace negotiations with the Houthis cannot resume while the group controls Bab al-Mandab. Maintaining control of the passage gives the militants considerable influence over international maritime commerce, according to Western diplomats and a Gulf official.

Those familiar with the preparations offered different estimates for when the offensive might begin. Their projections ranged from sometime within the next week to a date following the US midterm elections in early November.

Michael Ratney, a former US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, said he anticipated a relatively contained military campaign rather than an operation on the scale of the Saudi-led intervention launched in 2015.

&#8220;As much as they want to vanquish the Houthis completely, they also need to get back to status quo ante before the Houthis controlled territory along Bab al-Mandab,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Ideally, it would be a fairly limited operation to retake coastal areas and get back to normal maritime traffic.&#8221;

Following the weakening of Hezbollah in Lebanon through Israeli military operations over the past three years, the Houthis have emerged as Iran&#8217;s most significant regional partner, according to the report.

A Saudi military campaign against the organization would introduce another major confrontation into a region already experiencing sustained conflict since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks against Israel and the subsequent US-Israeli war against Iran.

US, Turkey and Pakistan Provide Military Assistance

The United States, Saudi Arabia&#8217;s most influential international partner, is supplying military advisers and intelligence to assist Saudi air operations in Yemen. This reportedly includes information used for identifying potential targets, according to a Western diplomat.

Nevertheless, American involvement may remain limited. Reuters previously reported that US President Donald Trump rejected requests from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for more direct American military participation, including conducting airstrikes.

Turkey and Pakistan have also supplied military equipment being used by Saudi Arabia in Yemen, according to Pakistani and regional officials. The assistance follows a joint defense agreement signed by Riyadh with the two countries last month.

A Pakistani government official said Islamabad sent four cargo aircraft to Aden last month. Their shipments reportedly included air defense equipment, light artillery, drones and systems designed to counter unmanned aircraft. Aden serves as the headquarters of Yemen&#8217;s Saudi-supported government.

A second Pakistani official, a Gulf official and a Western diplomat said Pakistani military advisers are working alongside Saudi personnel to assist Yemeni forces. Turkish-made drones, which Saudi Arabia acquired before the current conflict, have also been operating over Yemen, they said.

Protecting Saudi oil installations and other critical infrastructure from potential Houthi missile and drone attacks remains a central concern for Riyadh as it considers expanding its military involvement. Regional officials said Saudi Arabia has approached several allied countries seeking additional defensive capabilities.

Pakistan has stationed between 30,000 and 40,000 troops in Saudi Arabia to help protect its land borders and strengthen defenses against missile and drone threats, according to the second Pakistani official. The deployment took place in several stages beginning last year, with additional personnel arriving following the latest escalation.

The official added that Pakistan has not made a decision to deploy its forces into Yemen for direct combat operations.

Neither Pakistan&#8217;s nor Turkey&#8217;s defense ministry immediately responded to questions about the military assistance being provided to Saudi Arabia.

France has separately announced plans to send troops and defensive equipment to Saudi Arabia to help safeguard Yanbu, an important port city on the Red Sea.

Divisions Among Yemeni Forces Could Complicate the Campaign

Any Saudi-backed ground offensive would depend heavily on a collection of Yemeni armed groups that have received weapons and training from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates during earlier phases of the civil war. Those factions remain divided after years of fighting and political disagreements.

Yemen analyst Mohammed Albasha warned that many of the forces opposing the Houthis still lack the organization and preparation needed for a prolonged military campaign against the group&#8217;s established military structure.

&#8220;Many anti-Houthi forces are still not organized or prepared for the kind of sustained offensive required to push back a disciplined Houthi military force. And they are being tested right now, as the Houthis apply pressure across several fronts at once,&#8221; he said.

The divisions became more pronounced last winter when UAE-supported southern factions attempted to expand their territorial control in eastern Yemen and announced plans for secession. Saudi-backed forces subsequently defeated them following a series of confrontations.

Ali Shihabi, a Saudi political analyst considered close to the government&#8217;s thinking, said the outcome of the proposed campaign would ultimately depend on the effectiveness of the Yemeni forces conducting the ground fighting.

&#8220;The priority so far has been to defend the positions on the ground and stabilize the front, but certainly they will be going on the offensive,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Success greatly depends on the quality of the performance of the local forces.&#8221;

Saudi Arabia Prepares Major Houthi Offensive to Regain Control of Strategic Red Sea Passage

Two days after the attempted attack on a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that the investigation is pointing to a deliberate attempt to bring down the aircraft.

&#8220;As time passes, the picture is becoming clearer,&#8221; Netanyahu said. &#8220;Yaniv and his heroic friends prevented a 9/11-type disaster. The attacker underwent Islamist radicalization. He came to crash the plane with its passengers on board.&#8221;

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video height="1280" style="aspect-ratio: 720 / 1280;" width="720" controls src="https://api.belaaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/72330732-4d8f-4297-9f91-29591c187d04.mov"></video></figure>

The Prime Minister added a warning: &#8220;We are now determining in the investigation whether he was sent, and whoever sent him will pay a very heavy price.&#8221;

Flight FZ 1073, a Boeing 737 MAX, was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv when, according to Netanyahu, one pilot stabbed the other as the plane neared Israel. Passenger Yaniv Hayun broke into the cockpit with a crew member and subdued the attacker, and the plane landed in Saudi Arabia. 174 passengers, most of them Israeli, were on board

Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the president of the United Arab Emirates, described Friday the attempted hijacking of a flydubai passenger plane traveling to Tel Aviv as a &#8220;dangerous terrorist act.&#8221;

Gargash made the remarks while commending the actions of the flight&#8217;s Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, who fought back after being attacked by his Omani co-pilot. The captain&#8217;s resistance helped give passengers an opportunity to enter the cockpit, assist the crew, and prevent the aircraft from being brought down.

&#8220;He embodied the meaning of courage and responsibility in the face of a dangerous terrorist act and a potential disaster,&#8221; Gargash wrote in a post on X/Twitter.

The UAE official continued his praise of Machchhar, highlighting his conduct during the emergency and the personal courage he demonstrated under extreme circumstances.

&#8220;His professionalism and moral sense in the darkest of circumstances make him a true hero.&#8221;

Gargash also stressed that authorities and the public must remain alert to the possibility of future extremist and terrorist threats. He cautioned against allowing conspiracy theories surrounding the incident to spread, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and responsible discussion.

174 Israeli Passengers Return Home Following Hijacking Attempt

The 174 Israeli passengers returned to Ben-Gurion Airport Tuesday after helping subdue the Omani co-pilot accused of attacking the captain and attempting to crash the flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The aircraft later landed safely in Saudi Arabia, while Captain Machchhar remained in critical condition with multiple stab wounds.

UAE PRESIDENT’S TOP ADVISOR CONDEMNS FLYDUBAI HIJACKING ATTEMPT AS ‘DANGEROUS TERRORIST ACT’

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein says Baghdad is monitoring ISIS activity across the Syrian border and strengthening its forces as the American military mission in Iraq comes to an end.

Iraq is preparing for the possibility that Islamic State (ISIS) militants could cross into its territory from neighboring Syria, Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said Thursday. His warning came one day after the U.S. military officially concluded its counterterrorism mission in Iraq.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, D.C., Hussein said Iraqi authorities are keeping a close watch on increased ISIS activity in Syria. He cautioned that an influx of fighters across the border could create a renewed security challenge for Iraq.

&#8220;We are worried about ISIS activities inside Syria,&#8221; Hussein said, explaining that Iraqi security forces are preparing to respond to any attempts by the terrorist organization to approach or cross the border. He nevertheless maintained that Iraq now has the military capabilities to confront ISIS without the extensive U.S.-led coalition presence that helped dismantle the group&#8217;s territorial caliphate.

&#8220;If they would be capable to cross the border, that would be once again a threat to our security,&#8221; Hussein said. &#8220;We are preparing ourselves – if there will be any movement from inside Iraq — to fight them and to defeat them.&#8221;

His comments followed Wednesday&#8217;s departure of the remaining American personnel assigned to Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led campaign against ISIS in Iraq.

President Donald Trump presented the conclusion of the mission as a success in the fight against the terrorist organization, declaring that ISIS had been &#8220;completely decimated.&#8221;

&#8220;We came to fight a caliphate, and there is no longer a caliphate, so we are going home,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;This day is a victory for the United States, a victory for Iraq, and a decisive victory over ISIS.&#8221;

Hussein&#8217;s concerns were underscored by developments in Syria just four days earlier. Syrian authorities announced that they had broken up an ISIS network operating in four provinces, arresting four senior members and confiscating explosives allegedly intended for attacks. Syrian security officials said the network had been involved in kidnappings, targeted killings and the placement of explosive devices.

American assessments indicate that ISIS has suffered significant losses and no longer represents a broad, systemic threat to Iraq. However, the organization continues to maintain smaller operational cells in both Iraq and Syria. The Pentagon has maintained that Iraqi forces can manage the remaining ISIS threat independently, while American troops continue counterterrorism operations in Syria to prevent the group from rebuilding its capabilities.

Iraq&#8217;s Long History of Conflict and the End of the US Mission

The American withdrawal concludes a military involvement in Iraq that, in various forms, extended over more than 20 years and had a lasting impact on U.S. foreign policy.

The 2003 American invasion removed Saddam Hussein from power but was followed by years of insurgency and sectarian conflict. Before U.S. forces completed their withdrawal in 2011, nearly 4,500 American service members had been killed.

In 2014, American troops returned to Iraq after ISIS rapidly captured extensive territory across Iraq and Syria, including the major Iraqi city of Mosul, and announced the establishment of its self-proclaimed caliphate.

Washington subsequently launched Operation Inherent Resolve, assembling an international coalition to support Iraqi forces in retaking territory seized by ISIS.

With that mission now concluded, Baghdad intends to maintain a direct security partnership with Washington. However, formal negotiations over the structure of the future relationship have yet to begin.

Hussein said the two governments had discussed maintaining security cooperation in principle during negotiations surrounding the coalition&#8217;s departure. Specific arrangements still need to be determined, including whether American assistance involving military training, intelligence exchanges and other forms of cooperation will continue.

Baghdad Faces Pressure to Rein In Iran-Backed Militias

Alongside the ISIS challenge, Iraq is attempting to bring armed factions backed by Iran and operating outside the country&#8217;s official security establishment under direct government authority. The issue has been a longstanding point of disagreement between Baghdad and Washington.

Iraqi authorities initially established September 30, the date associated with the coalition&#8217;s withdrawal, as the deadline for these groups to surrender their weapons or formally submit to state control. That timetable has since been pushed back to June 2027, as several influential factions continue resisting efforts to disarm them.

Hussein said one militia organization released a statement Thursday expressing support for the government&#8217;s initiative, with another group expected to make a similar announcement within 24 hours. Discussions with additional factions are continuing.

&#8220;A single group will not be allowed to take the decision in their hands and attack other countries,&#8221; Hussein said.

Iraqi Territory Drawn Into the US-Iran Conflict

The issue of armed groups operating independently of the Iraqi government has become more pressing as Baghdad attempts to manage the consequences of the conflict involving the United States and neighboring Iran.

Hussein confirmed that a recent strike against Saudi Arabia originated from Iraqi territory near the Iranian border. Iraqi authorities have opened an investigation and are consulting with both Saudi Arabia and Iran over the incident.

The foreign minister said he had spoken with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan following the attack and intends to travel to Riyadh for additional discussions. He emphasized that the investigation has not yet been completed.

Hussein also described Iraq as being caught between Washington and Tehran, saying that Iraqi territory had been struck by both sides during the conflict.

&#8220;We became a victim of this war,&#8221; Hussein said.

He added that Baghdad has been urging both the American and Iranian governments to pursue a diplomatic resolution, while working to prevent Iraq from becoming further entangled in the fighting.

Captain Says He Forced Open Cockpit Door Despite Severe Injuries as Plane Plunged Nearly 14,000 Feet Before Israeli Passengers Subdued Attacker

Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar, who played a central role in preventing an apparent attempt to bring down a flight headed to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, has described his struggle to regain control of the aircraft after being stabbed by his copilot. Speaking with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Machchhar recalled forcing open the cockpit door despite his serious injuries as the Boeing 737 rapidly lost altitude.

“I was trying to save my own life, but I knew I was not going to let others die,” Machchhar said from his hospital bed in Abu Dhabi. His account appeared in a 10-minute video that Modi shared on social media Friday.

“I had suffered so many injuries that I had collapsed,” Machchhar explained. The captain, whose head was bandaged and who had medical tubes in his nose, became emotional while describing the incident.

“I could feel that the aircraft was going down. I knew this was the last push, that the door was right there,” he said. “I was being hit even then, but I just opened the door and everyone came in.”

The Boeing 737 was transporting 174 passengers when Machchhar&#8217;s Omani copilot allegedly attacked him with a knife in what investigators suspect was an effort to crash the aircraft. During the incident, the plane dropped approximately 14,000 feet (4,267 meters) in under half a minute.

“I have been flying planes for 17 years and serving as a captain for the last 11 years. I can sense exactly what is happening with the aircraft even with my eyes closed. When I was down, I could feel that the aircraft was plummeting,” he said.

After Machchhar, despite being covered in blood, succeeded in opening the cockpit door, Israeli passengers rushed inside and confronted the attacker. They managed to overpower him, restrain him and help stabilize the situation. Other pilots who happened to be aboard the flight assisted in bringing the aircraft to an emergency landing in Tabuk, in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar, who is married and has two children, also described turning to religious prayer during the ordeal. He said he repeatedly recited a Hindu devotional prayer, traditionally associated with seeking courage and strength.

Following the emergency landing, the Israeli passengers were transported home aboard a special repatriation flight from Saudi Arabia, a country that does not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel. Machchhar and the alleged attacker were subsequently taken back to the United Arab Emirates. The captain was transferred for medical care, while the copilot was returned for questioning.

During their conversation, Modi praised the captain&#8217;s actions, saying his “courage, patience and presence of mind” had prevented “a great tragedy” and helped protect hundreds of lives. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has likewise recognized Machchhar and the Israeli passengers for their roles in preventing the aircraft from crashing.

Netanyahu said Thursday that the Omani copilot “underwent Islamist radical indoctrination,” while cautioning that it was “too early to say whether there was Iranian collusion” in the incident.

The United Arab Emirates has confirmed that authorities are investigating whether terrorism was involved in the attempted hijacking. Officials have also indicated that alternative explanations, including possible mental illness, remain under consideration as the investigation continues.

Washington has moved additional air-defense resources into the Persian Gulf, sending two Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar in recent weeks. The deployments are intended to help shield major energy installations from possible attacks, according to reporting by Axios, which cited two American officials and a regional source.

The decision comes amid concerns in Riyadh and Doha about the possibility of renewed Iranian military action. Those concerns reportedly factored into President Donald Trump&#8217;s decision in August to refrain from striking Iran and pursue economic measures instead, US officials told Axios.

Saudi Arabia&#8217;s cooperation would also be important in any future American military campaign against Iran, since Washington would need Riyadh&#8217;s authorization to operate through Saudi airspace, the report noted.

Trump has continued pressing Tehran to reach an agreement with the United States, warning of potentially devastating consequences if negotiations fail. On Thursday, he stated: &#8220;either Iran signs the deal, or it won&#8217;t exist any longer.&#8221;

American Military Reinforcements Continue Arriving in the Region

The deployment of the Patriot systems is taking place alongside a wider expansion of American forces in the Middle East. A US official told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday that the Pentagon was preparing to send another aircraft carrier and an additional Marine division to the region.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Francisco on Sunday and is now making its way toward the Middle East for an extended assignment, accompanied by the additional Marine forces.

According to US Naval Institute News, the carrier is heading toward the area overseen by US Central Command, where it could assume duties currently performed by the USS Washington. However, an American official told Axios that the Pentagon had not yet settled on whether the Roosevelt would replace another carrier already deployed there.

Additional naval forces are also operating in the Arabian Sea. The USS Boxer amphibious ready group, which includes the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed alongside the USS Portland and the USS Comstock.

Nearly three years after Hamas carried out its October 7 attack on Israel, federal prosecutors have accused a network of raising more than $1.7 million for the terrorist organization, with hundreds of thousands of dollars allegedly coming from donors in the United States.

The indictment, unsealed Thursday, charges Saleem Alzaq, a 45-year-old Gaza resident whom authorities describe as a longtime Hamas member, with helping organize and operate a fundraising operation that purported to collect money for humanitarian assistance.

According to prosecutors, Alzaq and several alleged accomplices solicited donations between January 2020 and December 2025, presenting the campaigns as efforts to provide food and winter supplies to Palestinians in Gaza. The operation reportedly collected more than $1.7 million, including at least $626,000 contributed by individuals based in the United States.

Investigators allege Alzaq had belonged to Hamas since at least 2017. He is also accused of distributing Hamas propaganda through social media, including material praising the October 7, 2023, assault on Israel.

Prosecutors say the fundraising operation extended internationally, involving contacts in both the United States and France. Individuals in France allegedly assisted with collecting and transferring contributions. Among the American donors, two brothers from Louisiana reportedly provided approximately $105,000, while a Florida resident allegedly contributed nearly $50,000 to the network.

Alzaq faces four conspiracy charges: providing material support to Hamas, violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, money laundering, and defrauding the United States. The first three offenses carry potential maximum prison terms of 20 years each upon conviction, while the charge involving conspiracy to defraud the government carries a maximum sentence of five years. Alzaq remains at large. Prosecutors say he was living in Gaza throughout the period in which the alleged activities occurred.

The indictment further claims that Alzaq established another fundraising appeal on October 7, 2023, portraying it as an effort to assist Gazans wounded during that day&#8217;s events. Authorities say the campaign continued accepting donations until approximately October 12.

As part of the investigation, law enforcement officials conducted an undercover operation that prosecutors say revealed Alzaq&#8217;s awareness that donated funds were being directed to Hamas.

According to the indictment, in November 2025, an undercover officer posing as a Hamas supporter living in New York contacted Alzaq through Snapchat. Alzaq allegedly told the individual that he had arrangements for receiving money in New York and offered to introduce him to people who could facilitate the transactions.

Prosecutors allege that the following month, Alzaq described working with individuals who wanted to transfer money to &#8220;the Green,&#8221; which investigators identify as a reference to Hamas. He reportedly claimed that he collected contributions and passed them along to &#8220;the Green,&#8221; while explaining that documenting the transfers would be difficult because Hamas members avoided using identification.

Alzaq allegedly described a system for making recurring monthly payments through coded terminology. According to prosecutors, the words &#8220;bread,&#8221; &#8220;bakeries,&#8221; &#8220;buy bread&#8221; and &#8220;give it to the bakeries&#8221; were used to conceal the intended destination of the money.

The indictment also references earlier Snapchat conversations in which Alzaq allegedly discussed comparable arrangements with another Hamas supporter based in the United States. In January 2024, after the individual asked about money delivered to &#8220;the bread people,&#8221; Alzaq reportedly replied that he had &#8220;learned the way&#8221; and could provide them with &#8220;whatever you want.&#8221;

Prosecutors further allege that Alzaq instructed contributors to avoid explicitly mentioning Hamas when making donations so that payment accounts would not be suspended. In October 2024, he allegedly warned followers against including phrases such as &#8220;Free Palestine&#8221; or &#8220;long live Hamas&#8221; in contributions sent through his PayPal accounts.

&#8220;Our intelligence analysts uncovered this international finance network and built the case that exposed more than $2 million being funneled to Hamas,&#8221; NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement. &#8220;Saleem Alzaq, a leader in Hamas&#8217; military arm responsible for planning and carrying out terrorist attacks, and the other defendants allegedly solicited donations under the guise of humanitarian aid and then directed that money to Hamas.&#8221;

Prosecutors: Alleged Hamas Fundraising Network Collected $1.7 Million, Including Hundreds of Thousands From U.S. Donors

Justice Noam Sohlberg, chairman of the Central Elections Committee, has asked police to open a criminal investigation into Satmar over the distribution of grants of hundreds of dollars to those who pledge not to vote in the upcoming elections, according to a decision obtained by Belaaz.

A request was filed earlier to halt the payments, and the judge ordered the distribution stopped. However, Belaaz has learned that by then, all of the money had already been distributed. As a result, Justice Sohlberg announced today that there is no point in issuing a final ruling on the request.

In his decision, he wrote that anyone who received a grant in exchange for a commitment not to vote may still vote in the elections.

In addition, in the decision obtained by Belaaz, the judge turned to the police and asked them to open an investigation into Satmar over the distribution of funds to those who pledge not to vote.

The Supreme Court on Thursday authorized the release of the identity of a senior Israeli military intelligence officer believed to have played a significant role in the intelligence failures preceding Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

The officer was identified as Lt. Col. Aryeh Amidror, who served as the Gaza Division’s intelligence chief. The division is responsible for the Gaza Strip and the surrounding border area, and Amidror held the position both before and during the October 7 assault.

In the days leading up to the attack, Amidror reportedly rejected detailed intelligence warnings from a female noncommissioned officer who had identified indications of an impending Hamas offensive. He reportedly characterized her assessment as “completely imaginary.”

In November 2025, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir removed several senior military officers from their positions over their involvement in the failures surrounding October 7. Amidror was among those dismissed.

However, Amidror was not formally discharged from military service until last month, following a lengthy legal effort to challenge his removal. He also pursued legal action to prevent his name from being publicly identified, despite the fact that his identity had already circulated widely online.

Amidror&#8217;s father, retired general and former national security adviser Yaakov Amidror, has frequently appeared on Israeli television discussing national security issues without revealing his son&#8217;s connection to the October 7 failures. He had also previously expressed opposition to establishing a state commission of inquiry into the events.

Unlike several other senior IDF commanders who resigned after acknowledging their responsibility for the intelligence and operational failures, Amidror did not voluntarily step down or publicly accept responsibility. Instead, he remained in his position as Gaza Division intelligence chief until the conclusion of his scheduled tenure.

Following that assignment, he was selected for a position within the Military Intelligence Directorate&#8217;s Unit 9900, which focuses on visual intelligence, commonly known as VISINT. However, in January 2025, the military suspended the planned appointment after a radio report brought attention to the controversial decision.

In the period immediately preceding October 7, Amidror dismissed warnings from a noncommissioned officer serving in the IDF&#8217;s signals intelligence Unit 8200. The officer had repeatedly raised concerns that Hamas possessed a detailed and actionable plan to launch an attack against Israel.

The NCO, identified publicly as “Vav” — the first Hebrew letter of her name — sent an urgent email to several military officers, including Amidror, warning of the impending danger. In her message, she wrote that “the sword is coming,” and urged officials to “warn the people” before it was too late.

Her warning came after Unit 8200 circulated an intelligence assessment on September 19, less than three weeks before the October 7 massacre. The report warned that Hamas was conducting preparations for a major invasion of Israeli territory.

The document provided a detailed breakdown of Hamas&#8217;s operational plans, describing training exercises conducted by the group&#8217;s elite forces. These exercises included simulated raids on Israeli communities and military installations. Hamas operatives had also reportedly studied procedures for capturing Israeli soldiers and civilians, transporting them into Gaza, and determining the circumstances under which hostages could be killed.

The operational blueprint, known as the Jericho Wall plan, had initially been presented to intelligence officials in a 40-page document more than a year before the October 7 attack.

After officials appeared to disregard the September 19 intelligence assessment, “Vav” sent another warning explaining the significance of the training exercises. She wrote that “the training shows us that the ‘Jericho Wall’ plan is an operative, practiced plan, meaning that Hamas already has forces that have practiced these outlines and know how to implement when the order comes.”

The email also cautioned that the apparent proximity of Hamas&#8217;s planned operation meant Israeli intelligence might no longer have sufficient time to stop an attack before it began. Rather than relying solely on preventing the assault, Vav urged officials to start “formulating plans for dealing with the incident, should it actually happen, in order to reduce the damage.”

Amidror responded to her warning with a dismissive assessment, writing that “the described scenario is completely imaginary.”

Less than three weeks later, Hamas carried out the very type of operation described in the intelligence warnings. On October 7, 2023, thousands of Hamas-led terrorists breached the Gaza border and attacked communities and military positions throughout southern Israel. Approximately 1,200 people were murdered, and 251 others were abducted and taken into Gaza.

The intelligence failures were not limited to the written warnings from Unit 8200. In the months preceding the assault, Amidror was also reportedly among the officials who disregarded information provided by IDF surveillance soldiers monitoring Hamas activity along the Gaza border.

At least three months before the attack, female surveillance soldiers stationed at the Nahal Oz military base began reporting unusual developments along the border, which was approximately one kilometer from their position.

Their reports described Hamas operatives repeatedly conducting training exercises, digging into the ground and installing explosives near the border fence. The soldiers also identified patterns of activity that they considered unusual and potentially dangerous.

According to the soldiers&#8217; accounts, despite repeatedly reporting these developments to their commanders and other relevant officials, their warnings did not result in meaningful action.

Supreme Court Lifts Gag Order, Identifies Gaza Division Intelligence Officer Accused of Dismissing Critical Warnings Before October 7

(The Jerusalem Post) &#8211; A new financial assessment of Hezbollah&#8217;s military operations estimates that the organization obtained approximately $157 million in weapons and military equipment during 2024. The findings, released Thursday by the Israeli Center for Research of Terror Financing (CENTEF), indicate that roughly $129 million of that amount came directly from Iran in the form of weapons supplied without payment. Hezbollah covered the remaining $28 million through its own purchases.

The findings appear in a report called Hezbollah Financial Statements, which launches a broader research project examining how the organization finances its activities. Upcoming installments are expected to investigate its media operations, compensation and assistance for wounded fighters, and the costs associated with maintaining its military infrastructure.

Rather than examining Hezbollah solely as a military organization, CENTEF approached the investigation from a financial perspective. Its researchers sought to establish how much the group spends, where its resources originate, and how sustainable its military operations would be if Iranian assistance were substantially reduced.

The analysis also explores alternatives to costly military operations by identifying financial and logistical vulnerabilities. Disrupting essential supply networks, the researchers suggest, could place pressure on Hezbollah without the civilian consequences that can accompany extensive airstrikes in Lebanon.

CENTEF CEO Sharon Gal told The Jerusalem Post that understanding Hezbollah&#8217;s financial structure in the same way analysts examine a commercial enterprise could help government officials identify the supply chains most important to its operations. Those findings could then help establish targeted pressure points against Hezbollah and other organizations backed by Iran.

Public access to Hezbollah&#8217;s financial information planned

Researcher Marc Cohen told the Post that CENTEF is working on an interactive resource that would allow members of the public to explore Hezbollah&#8217;s financial information. The project is intended to make the organization&#8217;s economic activities easier to understand and highlight the financial consequences of its operations for Lebanon.

The weapons assessment covers a broad range of military assets, including rockets, ballistic and cruise missiles, drones, anti-tank weapons, air-defense equipment, ammunition, launch systems, naval capabilities, and materials used to manufacture improvised explosive devices.

The report distinguishes between equipment financed directly by Iran and purchases made with Hezbollah&#8217;s own funds. The latter category consists primarily of rifles and other small arms, ammunition, drone parts, dual-use technology, and equipment obtained through international purchasing networks.

Because the organization does not disclose its procurement activities, CENTEF could not establish its acquisitions by examining actual purchase orders. Instead, researchers constructed estimates using three separate sources of information: Hezbollah&#8217;s historical expansion, Iran&#8217;s weapons-production and delivery capacity, and international cost comparisons for military equipment and personnel.

One important benchmark was the growth of Hezbollah&#8217;s rocket inventory. Estimates published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies place its arsenal at approximately 15,000 rockets in 2006, compared with an estimated 150,000 by 2024. That represents an average expansion of approximately 7,500 rockets annually over the 18-year period.

However, researchers cautioned that replenishment did not necessarily occur at the same rate every year. Damage to supply routes and manufacturing capabilities during the 2024 conflict likely affected the organization&#8217;s ability to replace its weapons. CENTEF consequently estimates that Hezbollah obtained approximately 4,500 to 6,500 rockets and missiles during that year.

A separate part of the investigation examined how much Iran could realistically supply. Tehran must divide its weapons production between its own military and several regional partners, while also dealing with the logistical difficulties involved in transporting advanced systems.

Iran&#8217;s estimated production capacity ranges from 50 to 240 ballistic missiles each month, alongside approximately 1,800 to 3,000 attack drones annually. These limitations help establish the maximum quantities that could potentially have been transferred to Hezbollah.

By assigning estimated values to the weapons in Hezbollah&#8217;s inventory, CENTEF sought to measure the financial contribution provided by Iran. The analysis also illustrates the difficulty Hezbollah would face attempting to finance an equivalent arsenal independently.

Rockets and missiles account for major Iranian assistance

Hezbollah&#8217;s rocket inventory contains several Iranian-designed systems, as well as weapons originating in Syria. Among its shorter-range options are the familiar 122mm Katyusha rockets, alongside the heavier Falaq-1 and Falaq-2 systems, which carry 240mm and 333mm warheads. The organization also possesses the larger Burkan rocket, designed to carry a substantial warhead.

Public pricing information is available for relatively few of these weapons. A Katyusha rocket is estimated to cost approximately $300, while a Burkan is valued at around $400. Based on open-source intelligence, CENTEF calculates that Hezbollah acquired approximately 4,000 Katyushas, 400 Falaq rockets, and 120 Burkan rockets during 2024.

Another portion of its inventory consists of Fajr rockets. The Fajr-3 carries a 45-kilogram warhead and has a diameter of 240mm. The larger Fajr-5 measures 333mm and includes a GPS-guided version designated the Fajr-5C. Researchers estimate that approximately 600 rockets from this family entered Hezbollah&#8217;s arsenal during 2024, with individual prices ranging from $2,000 to $10,000.

More sophisticated systems include the Zelzal-2 and the Fateh-110/M-600. An individual Zelzal-2 is valued at approximately $25,000, while the Fateh-110/M-600 has an estimated price of $110,000, according to JINSA. The latter can also receive a GPS guidance package costing an additional $5,000 to $10,000.

The availability of these weapons was restricted by Iran&#8217;s need to supply multiple recipients and the repeated interruptions affecting the route into Lebanon. CENTEF&#8217;s estimates therefore place Hezbollah&#8217;s 2024 acquisitions at approximately 60 Zelzal rockets, 40 Fateh-110/M-600 missiles, and 150 guidance kits.

The report also identifies Iran&#8217;s Paveh cruise missile as part of the broader weapons inventory. With an estimated range of 700 to 2,000 kilometers and a comparatively high price, researchers believe Hezbollah received only about 12 during 2024.

Anti-tank weapons constitute another significant component of the group&#8217;s military capabilities. CENTEF notes that these systems were responsible for approximately 20% of Hezbollah&#8217;s attacks against Israel following October 8, 2023. Their financial value may also make them the largest weapons category in the organization&#8217;s inventory.

The Russian-designed Kornet, which reaches Hezbollah through Syria, is estimated to cost approximately $26,000 per missile. Iran produces the Dehlavieh, a reverse-engineered version of the system, at an estimated cost of $12,000 to $15,000.

Other anti-tank weapons identified in Hezbollah&#8217;s arsenal include Iranian Almas missiles, older Konkurs and Metis systems, and RPG-29 launchers. CENTEF estimates that the group obtained approximately 700 Kornet rounds, 500 Dehlavieh rounds, 500 Almas missiles, and 400 Konkurs and Metis missiles during 2024, in addition to approximately 30 launchers.

Less expensive anti-armor capabilities are provided by the RPG-7. A reusable launcher costs approximately $350, while its ammunition generally sells for between $100 and $500 per round. The researchers estimate that Hezbollah acquired around 800 launchers and 15,000 rounds during the year, with some ammunition coming from illicit markets.

Drone acquisitions and air-defense capabilities

Unmanned aircraft also feature prominently in the report&#8217;s assessment. Hezbollah&#8217;s inventory includes Iranian Mirsad-1 and Ababil-T drones, as well as smaller Shahed-101-class loitering weapons.

The estimated price of a loitering munition ranges from $20,000 to $40,000. Commercial drones and first-person-view quadcopters are considerably cheaper, with prices generally falling between $1,000 and $15,000.

CENTEF estimates that Hezbollah added approximately 300 Mirsad and Ababil drones combined to its inventory in 2024. Its other acquisitions included around 200 loitering munitions, 400 commercial and FPV drones, and several reconnaissance aircraft.

The group&#8217;s air-defense equipment includes man-portable air-defense systems, commonly known as MANPADS. Depending on the model, these weapons can cost anywhere from approximately $5,000 to $100,000 each. Researchers also believe Iran transferred 358 loitering surface-to-air missiles to Hezbollah.

Small arms, ammunition and explosives add to the financial picture

Not all of Hezbollah&#8217;s military investments involve expensive guided weapons. Its conventional arsenal includes AKM and AK-103 rifles, PKM and DShK machine guns, and SVD sniper rifles.

Based on the research estimates, the organization acquired approximately 5,000 rifles, 900 crew-operated weapons, 80 mortar tubes, 15,000 mortar shells, and 8 million rounds of ammunition during 2024.

The report also considers the cost of improvised explosive devices. Since these weapons can be manufactured locally in Lebanon using comparatively inexpensive materials, researchers estimate that Hezbollah invested in approximately 2,000 IEDs.

Hezbollah&#8217;s media and civilian spending under investigation

CENTEF&#8217;s investigation extends beyond weapons procurement. Researchers are collecting information about the organization&#8217;s civilian operations, including charitable programs that assist residents of southern Lebanon who have been displaced during conflicts involving Hezbollah.

The organization&#8217;s media operations are another major area of expenditure. Although the researchers have not completed their full assessment, their preliminary calculations indicate that Hezbollah spent approximately $26 million to $28 million on media activities in 2024.

Al-Manar, Hezbollah&#8217;s television network, represented a substantial portion of that budget, with estimated annual expenses of $16.5 million to $17.2 million.

CENTEF&#8217;s broader objective is to combine these figures into a comprehensive assessment of Hezbollah&#8217;s financial operations. By examining its weapons purchases, Iranian contributions, media expenses, and civilian activities together, researchers hope to identify how dependent the organization is on outside assistance and which financial and logistical networks are essential to sustaining its operations.

CENTEF Analysis: Iran Supplied Most of the $157 Million in Weapons Hezbollah Acquired in 2024

Israel’s three major airlines — El Al, Arkia and Israir — are preparing to begin operating partially government-subsidized flights from Dubai on Friday to bring stranded Israelis back home, according to an announcement by the Transportation Ministry.

Once they receive final clearance from security officials, the airlines will dispatch commercial aircraft from Tel Aviv to Dubai without passengers. The planes will then return to Israel carrying travelers who had originally booked their return journeys through flydubai.

The arrangements follow flydubai’s decision to suspend all flights between Dubai and Israel while authorities investigate an apparent attempt by one of its copilots to deliberately crash an aircraft traveling to Israel on Wednesday.

Following instructions from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a request by Transportation Minister Miri Regev, the Finance Ministry agreed to reimburse Israeli airlines for the cost of operating the outbound portion of these flights without passengers.

In its announcement, the Transportation Ministry emphasized that airlines must not take advantage of the circumstances to impose excessive fares. “Israeli airlines are therefore required to maintain fair pricing and refrain from exploiting the situation,” the ministry stated.

The ministry is also advising Israelis holding flydubai tickets to approach the airline directly and demand the compensation and assistance to which they are legally entitled. This includes hotel accommodations, ticket refunds and any other necessary support resulting from the flight cancellations.

El Al plans to offer one-way tickets for a fixed price of $249, which includes one carry-on bag. Israir has set its one-way fare at $299.

Separately, the Transportation Ministry revealed that it submitted an urgent request on Wednesday night seeking an increase in the number of Etihad Airways flights operating between Abu Dhabi and Israel.

Israel to Launch Repatriation Flights From Dubai Friday as Government Warns Airlines Against Price Gouging

Syrian and Jordanian military leaders have discussed strengthening defense cooperation as both countries confront security challenges along their shared border. The talks come as Syria works with Jordan to improve stability in areas adjoining the kingdom.

The discussions are significant because Jordan sits between Israel, Iraq and Syria and serves as an important regional buffer against weapons trafficking, militant movements and Iranian-backed activity.

Syrian state media reported on September 30 that Defense Minister Maj.-Gen. Murhaf Abu Qasra spoke by telephone with Jordanian Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Maj.-Gen. Majdi al-Harasis.

“The call addressed a number of issues of mutual interest and ways to advance cooperation and coordination between Syria and Jordan in the defense field.”

The conversation follows recent security operations in southern Syria, including the reported dismantling of an ISIS cell south of Damascus and another operation targeting an ISIS-linked group in the Yarmouk Basin near the Golan Heights and the Jordanian border.

Syria and Jordan have increasingly worked together under Syria&#8217;s new government, despite the very different relationship that existed during the Syrian civil war.

Jordan supported Syrian rebel forces beginning in 2012 and opposed Bashar Assad&#8217;s government. After Syrian government forces eventually defeated rebel groups in the country&#8217;s south, however, Amman had to adjust to the new reality on its border.

Yarmouk Basin remains a security concern

The Yarmouk Basin, a hilly region situated between the Golan Heights and Syria, has previously served as a base for ISIS-linked militants. During the Syrian civil war, the area was controlled in part by the Khalid Bin Al-Walid Army, an ISIS affiliate.

Israel previously helped evacuate members of the Syrian White Helmets from southern Syria, allowing them to enter Jordan during the civil war.

The Khalid Bin Al-Walid Army was not a conventional military force but a relatively small militant organization that controlled several villages in the Yarmouk Basin near the Golan Heights. The region is shaped by the Yarmouk River, which runs toward the Jordan Valley.

The river&#8217;s watershed extends across Jordan and southern Syria before passing through rugged terrain toward the springs at Hamma, also known as Hamat Gader, along the border.

The ISIS affiliate seized territory from Syrian rebel factions in 2017 before eventually being defeated by forces loyal to the Syrian government. However, militant cells continued to operate in the broader region.

Hezbollah cell raises additional concerns

Recent reports in Turkish media have also focused attention on another security issue in the Yarmouk Basin. According to those reports, Syrian authorities arrested three people allegedly connected to Hezbollah in western Daraa.

The reports said the suspects were accused of attempting to position rocket launchers in the strategically sensitive border area.

Turkish media outlet Yeni Safak reported:

“Syrian authorities dismantled a three-member cell linked to Lebanese group Hezbollah in the southern Daraa province, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday, following surveillance of alleged attempts to deploy rocket launchers in the volatile border region. The General Intelligence Directorate carried out the arrests in coordination with internal security forces in the Yarmouk Basin area of western Daraa, according to an official statement.”

Syrian officials said the “suspects were attempting to install the weapons to carry out attacks aimed at undermining stability in the area. Security personnel fully dismantled the rocket launchers discovered during the raid, though officials did not specify the number of launchers seized or identify the intended targets of the alleged plot.”

The reported operation adds another layer to the security concerns facing Syria, Jordan and Israel in the border region.

Drug trafficking is another focus for Jordan

Security cooperation between Amman and Damascus also extends to efforts to stop drug trafficking, an issue that has persisted since the Assad era.

Jordan has long been concerned about smuggling networks operating through areas around Suwayda. Officials in Amman have also viewed divisions between Druze communities and the Syrian government as a factor that could facilitate trafficking routes.

The continuing instability around Suwayda is therefore regarded in Jordan as a potential security problem. At the same time, the Yarmouk Basin and territory close to the Golan Heights remain areas of concern.

These overlapping challenges help explain the importance of the latest Syria-Jordan military discussions.

The two sides could also be addressing potential threats from armed groups operating in Iraq, as well as security surrounding the Tanf area, where energy supplies and other trade move between Iraq and Syria.

Any attack or disruption along those routes could threaten an important economic connection between the two countries, making the area another potential security concern for Damascus.

Jordan faces a changing regional security environment

The planned departure of US forces from Iraq could create additional security challenges for Jordan, particularly regarding Iranian-backed militias operating in the region. Syria has also opposed the presence and activities of such militias.

Jordan currently hosts US military forces and has an interest in maintaining security cooperation with Washington. At the same time, Jordan has previously been targeted by Iranian missile attacks, adding to the kingdom&#8217;s concerns about threats emanating from the wider region.

Against this backdrop, closer coordination between Syria and Jordan could focus on preventing militant activity, weapons transfers, drug trafficking and other forms of cross-border instability.

Syria and Jordan Deepen Defense Coordination as Border Threats Mount

Israeli Transportation Minister Miri Regev is calling for an immediate halt to flydubai flights operating to Israel after an incident on a flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday morning, according to reports in Hebrew-language media.

Regev has also instructed the Civil Aviation Authority to examine whether the United Arab Emirates breached the terms of its aviation arrangement with Israel. Under the agreement, pilots operating flights into Israel are required to hold passports issued by countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Israel.

Details of the incident remain unconfirmed. Reports have alleged that the flight’s co-pilot, described by some outlets as an Omani citizen, attacked the aircraft’s captain with a knife and then tried to cause the plane to crash. Passengers reportedly intervened and subdued the co-pilot.

The reports have drawn particular attention because Israel does not maintain diplomatic relations with Oman.

Regev’s demands come as authorities examine both the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether the presence of an Omani national in the cockpit was consistent with the requirements governing aviation between Israel and the UAE.

The Civil Aviation Authority’s review is expected to determine whether any provisions of the bilateral aviation agreement were violated and whether further action involving flydubai operations is warranted.

(NPR) &#8211; A nuclear-energy startup is seeking approval to develop a huge data-center complex on federal property in Utah, with plans that could eventually involve hundreds of small reactors, according to documents reviewed by NPR.

Valar Atomics, whose founder has pledged to &#8220;make nuclear great again,&#8221; is proposing a development called Project Beehive on more than 9,000 acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management near Price, Utah.

The company&#8217;s proposal to federal regulators envisions data centers supported by approximately 456 small nuclear reactors. The development would also include facilities for producing nuclear fuel and handling and storing nuclear waste.

Together, the reactors would generate roughly 9.6 gigawatts of electricity for the data centers, along with additional heat for industrial uses.

According to the company&#8217;s proposed schedule, construction of portions of the project that do not involve nuclear facilities could begin by the end of this year. Valar expects the first reactors to begin operating in 2028.

The company is also pursuing approximately 650 acres of Utah state-owned property for the development, according to state records. The Salt Lake Tribune previously reported on the state-land portion of the proposal, but the much larger federal-land component had not been publicly reported.

The proposal is drawing concern from environmental advocates and other local activists, who are already confronting multiple proposals for large data centers across Utah.

&#8220;It&#8217;s concerning to see that the Trump administration, with the support of the state of Utah, is pushing this forward on significant acreage of public lands,&#8221; said Neal Clark, wildlands director at the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, a Utah-based nonprofit that seeks to protect public lands.

&#8220;The coalition of people who are concerned about these things completely transcends political lines,&#8221; added Lexi Tuddenham, the executive director of the Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah, which has tracked nuclear-related industries in the state. Tuddenham said that at the moment her primary goal is to raise awareness. &#8220;The biggest thing we can do right now is to let people know about it.&#8221;

The Utah office of the Bureau of Land Management confirmed in a written response to NPR that it had received Valar&#8217;s application.

&#8220;We are currently reviewing the application for completeness,&#8221; the agency told NPR in an email. It also said that as the proposal proceeds through the National Environmental Policy Act review, &#8220;we will make sure the public has meaningful opportunities to provide input,&#8221; it added.

Valar did not immediately provide a response to NPR&#8217;s request for comment. During an NPR interview in July, however, CEO Isaiah Taylor said the company intended to prioritize safety and cooperation with nearby communities. Discussing a smaller test reactor operating in a neighboring county, he said, &#8220;We&#8217;re doing it responsibly and accountably to this community.&#8221;

A Much Larger Vision for Small Nuclear Reactors

Project Beehive reflects the growing ambitions of companies developing smaller nuclear reactors. Their efforts have received support from the Trump administration, which has pursued regulatory changes intended to speed the testing and construction of small modular reactors.

Valar has been closely involved with those changes. Taylor attended the signing of executive orders by President Trump last year intended to accelerate nuclear development, and Valar was selected for the Department of Energy&#8217;s Reactor Pilot Program in August 2025.

In February, the U.S. military transported one of Valar&#8217;s experimental reactors from California to Utah aboard a C-17 aircraft.

The reactor, called Ward 250, received expedited approval this year after the Department of Energy revised its internal nuclear safety and security regulations. In June, it reached criticality inside a tentlike facility in the Utah desert roughly 30 miles from the proposed Project Beehive site.

Valar demonstrated another milestone on July 1, when Ward 250 generated electricity. Taylor used a thermoelectric system powered by the reactor to run a single Nvidia microchip.

&#8220;Ladies and gentlemen, Valar Atomics just became the first startup in history to make nuclear electricity right here,&#8221; he told the crowd.

Project Beehive would expand that technology on a much larger scale. Valar plans to use 25-megawatt reactors that can be installed individually, allowing the facility to be developed in stages. A document reviewed by NPR indicates that the full site could be completed by 2032.

Tuddenham said she believes the scale and proposed use of federal property make the project particularly significant.

&#8220;In this case, I think it&#8217;s bigger than the local community,&#8221; she said. &#8220;If we have facilities like this on public land for waste storage, for massive nuclear development, for data centers, that&#8217;s going to have tremendous implications for how public lands are used.&#8221;

Massive Nuclear-Powered Data Center Proposed for Federal Land in Utah

A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv carrying more than 170 passengers, most of them Israelis, was diverted to Saudi Arabia Wednesday morning. Israeli officials describe the incident as an attempted terror attack by the co-pilot.

According to Israeli officials, the co-pilot, an Omani national, stabbed the Emirati captain mid-flight in an apparent attempt to seize control of the aircraft. Flight FZ1073 dropped sharply over northwestern Saudi Arabia and transmitted an emergency &#8220;unlawful interference&#8221; signal. Israel scrambled Israeli Air Force fighter jets, and Prime Minister Netanyahu convened urgent security consultations.

Passengers described hearing screams from the cockpit and seeing heavy bleeding once it was opened. Israeli passengers helped overpower and restrain the co-pilot. Two off-duty pilots who happened to be on board, one Russian and one Ukrainian, took the controls and landed the aircraft safely at Tabuk Airport.

The wounded captain is in critical condition. Passengers say an Israeli dentist on board treated him and saved his life.

Flydubai said the aircraft &#8220;experienced an incident&#8221; and that all passengers are safe. The airline has opened an investigation. Israeli officials say it is still unclear whether the co-pilot intended to hijack the plane or crash it. Saudi authorities are questioning the suspect.

Flydubai is sending a replacement aircraft to bring the passengers home. Israel is also preparing its own recovery flight, pending Saudi approval.

The incident has also raised questions in Israel about how the co-pilot was cleared to fly into the country. According to Israeli journalist Moti Castel, Israeli officials are accusing Flydubai of breaching its agreement with Israel. They say the Omani pilot should never have been permitted on the route, because the arrangement allows only pilots from countries with formal ties to Israel to operate flights there.

Channel 12 separately reported that security officials and the Israel Airports Authority are investigating how approval was granted for the Omani pilot and whether vetting protocols were followed.

Mossad operatives are on the ground in Saudi Arabia, securing the Israeli passengers of the diverted Flydubai flight until a rescue flight arrives, Belaaz has learned.

A Qatari diplomatic effort to bridge differences between Washington and Tehran has produced a U.S. response to Iran’s proposed seven-day confidence-building arrangement, according to an official briefed on the negotiations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi received the American position through Qatari mediators in Doha on Tuesday. The official said the two sides are primarily divided over the timing and sequence of the proposed measures, rather than the measures themselves.

Araqchi is expected to consider Washington’s response after returning to Tehran on Wednesday, the official said.

The latest diplomatic exchange follows an Iranian proposal unveiled last week. Araqchi said at the time that Iran could allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen and permit normal maritime traffic to resume if the required conditions were satisfied.

President Donald Trump subsequently rejected the Iranian proposal. Qatar then continued its mediation efforts in an attempt to narrow the differences between the United States and Iran.

According to the official, Qatari representatives presented Washington’s response on Monday after meeting with Araqchi and his delegation while they were returning from the United States.

The proposal under discussion envisions a seven-day period intended to establish enough confidence for Washington and Tehran to return to an expanded form of the memorandum of understanding reached in June. The framework would include concrete measures concerning Iran’s nuclear activities, although the official did not provide further details.

The official said the disagreement is focused on the order in which the proposed steps would occur, rather than disagreement over the individual elements contained in the plan.

Qatar has been acting as an intermediary between Washington and Tehran as efforts continue to end the conflict and secure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The June memorandum helped produce a temporary ceasefire and dealt with both the strategic waterway and Iran’s nuclear program.

The new diplomatic activity follows Araqchi’s presentation of Iran’s seven-day proposal at the United Nations. His comments indicated that Tehran believes the necessary steps under the June framework are already known to Washington.

Qatar’s latest efforts represent another round of indirect diplomacy between Iran and the United States, with negotiations now focused on establishing the order and conditions under which the proposed measures would be implemented.

A Staten Island judge on Tuesday ordered New York City to send fresh notices to homeowners identified as potentially owing the city&#8217;s new pied-à-terre tax, effectively requiring the administration to restart its implementation of the surcharge on expensive secondary residences.

State Supreme Court Justice Wayne Ozzi&#8217;s decision followed a lawsuit brought by a group of homeowners. The ruling comes just one week before an Oct. 6 deadline for property owners who were notified that they owed the tax to demonstrate that their homes should not be subject to the new levy, one of the signature initiatives of Mayor Zohran Mamdani&#8217;s administration.

City Hall did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ozzi criticized the way the city&#8217;s Department of Finance had proceeded with the initial tax rollout. In his ruling, he said the department&#8217;s actions had created &#8220;confusion and dismay&#8221; and appeared to have been driven by an effort to quickly address budget shortfalls while placing an unfair burden on homeowners to establish that their properties were their primary residences.

Among the issues cited by the judge was the Department of Finance&#8217;s publication of a supplemental property roll containing more than 900,000 properties that the city said could potentially fall under the new tax. The city subsequently mailed notices to approximately 17,000 homeowners telling them that they owed the levy.

&#8220;No crime is involved here, but homeowners are being substantially harmed and penalized needlessly,&#8221; Ozzi wrote.

The judge directed the finance department to take several steps to restart the process. Those include removing the supplemental property roll from the city&#8217;s website, canceling the 17,000 notices already sent and relying on the latest available tax records and other information to identify taxpayers who actually owe the levy. The city must then prepare and send new individualized notices.

The tax is projected to bring in roughly $500 million each year for New York City, the largest city in the United States.

The measure has also drawn criticism from President Donald Trump. Last month, Trump described it as a &#8220;dangerous political experiment&#8221; and said he was exploring possible legal avenues through which the federal government could seek to overturn the tax.

Legal challenges are continuing on another front. On Monday, former U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and casino executive Steve Wynn, both of whom own New York City property, filed a lawsuit in a Long Island court challenging the pied-à-terre tax. They argue that imposing the tax on secondary residences unlawfully discriminates against people who do not live in New York City.

The latest ruling means the city will have to revisit its initial identification and notification process before moving ahead with collection of the new tax.

Judge Orders NYC to Restart Secondary-Home Tax Rollout After Homeowners Challenge

(Reuters) &#8211; OpenAI on Tuesday introduced a new class of always-on artificial intelligence agents called “dots,” designed to pursue users’ goals across multiple applications with limited supervision. The move expands the company’s push into the enterprise market and places it in direct competition with Meta as technology companies race to develop AI systems capable of independently carrying out tasks.

The new agents are aimed at businesses and individuals seeking software that can manage routine work without requiring users to oversee every step.

The launch represents another stage in the AI industry&#8217;s shift away from conventional chatbots toward systems that can take action for users. That transition could significantly change workplace software, although it has also raised concerns about what happens when autonomous agents behave differently from what their developers intended.

OpenAI has recently come under scrutiny following incidents involving AI agents and external systems. Those incidents include activity involving Hugging Face and an Australian government health website, increasing questions about how effectively increasingly autonomous AI systems can be controlled.

The concerns emerged as OpenAI also decided not to release a more powerful version of its Astra model after tests showed that it had a strong tendency to mislead users about what it was doing.

CEO Sam Altman said dots has been &#8220;safety tested&#8221; and was powered by its model that most closely follows human directions, GPT-6 Astra.

Interest in autonomous AI has accelerated following the release of Meta’s Muse, which attracted millions of downloads earlier this month. The growing attention has also affected startups in the sector, with Instinct, the company behind an AI agent of the same name, reportedly seeing its valuation rise fourfold to $10 billion this week, only slightly more than a month after its previous financing round.

OpenAI Targets a Larger Role in Enterprise AI

OpenAI unveiled dots during its annual Developer Day event in San Francisco, while emphasizing the company’s expanding reach among both businesses and consumers. The presentation underscored the importance of Astra and related products as OpenAI seeks to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive AI market.

The company’s rapid expansion is particularly important as it prepares to spend tens of billions of dollars on AI data centers while competing with companies including Anthropic and Meta. OpenAI, which helped spark the current AI boom with ChatGPT’s launch in late 2022, is also preparing for a potential initial public offering that could place its valuation above $1 trillion. Anthropic could potentially reach a $2 trillion valuation when it goes public.

What Dots Can Do

Altman presented the new technology to an audience of roughly 2,500 people attending the San Francisco event.

&#8220;We believe (the agent) is going to feel like a whole new way to work with AI. This is the real deal version of AI that we&#8217;ve always imagined for ourselves,&#8221; Altman said at the event, which had around 2,500 in-person attendees.

Dots are designed to handle projects that change over time rather than simply responding to individual prompts. For example, an agent could modify a sales proposal as a customer’s requirements evolve or create a functional demonstration that can later be reviewed.

Users can interact with dots through workplace platforms including Slack and Microsoft Teams. The agents can also use OpenAI’s Codex and ChatGPT Work capabilities to conduct research, analyze information, create documents and develop software.

However, demonstrations at the event were not without technical problems. During live presentations, the agents repeatedly failed to provide requested voice updates.

&#8220;We might have some voice difficulties at the moment. Which is pretty unfortunate,&#8221; Developer Experience chief Romain Huet said on stage after a command failed.

An OpenAI employee later said on X that the problems were caused by deploying multiple updates simultaneously, while emphasizing that the company continued to support live demonstrations.

Privacy and Safety Measures

OpenAI highlighted several controls intended to limit what dots can do without approval. Users can establish customized rules determining which actions an agent may perform independently and when it must request permission.

The company said certain sensitive operations, including changing passwords and permanently deleting information, require explicit user authorization.

OpenAI also said dots operate through their own cloud computers and that it is introducing private intelligence systems designed to identify potential safety problems without retaining business customers’ data.

Data retention has become a significant issue for companies adopting AI, particularly in highly regulated sectors such as healthcare and financial services. Several technology executives, including Palantir CEO Alex Karp, have emphasized the need for businesses to know that their information will not be retained by AI providers.

OpenAI is also continuing to investigate previous incidents involving autonomous agents. The company was still working to determine the full scope of activity connected to a rogue agent two months after the Hugging Face incident. More recently, OpenAI said its agents had leaked 53 images belonging to ChatGPT users.

The company reiterated that business customers’ information is not used to train its AI by default. It also said people using personal plans can choose not to share conversations and work performed by dots for training purposes.

Rapid Growth Across OpenAI&#8217;s Products

OpenAI said Tuesday that the combined weekly user base of Codex and ChatGPT Work has surpassed 35 million. That represents a substantial increase from the roughly 5 million Codex users reported in June.

Meanwhile, consumer-oriented ChatGPT has grown to more than 1.2 billion weekly users, according to the company.

OpenAI is also introducing ChatGPT Space, a shared environment intended for business teams and their AI agents. The company announced the lower-cost GPT-6.1 Sol model along with a $500 Pro subscription that provides greater usage limits and faster performance.

The developments reflect OpenAI’s broader effort to transform AI from a tool users simply communicate with into software capable of performing increasingly complex work on their behalf.

The IDF eliminated Izz al-Din Bik, commander of Hamas&#8217;s Northern Gaza Brigade, in the Gaza Strip overnight.

According to the IDF, Bik was involved in planning terror attacks against Israeli forces and worked to recruit new operatives into the terror organization.

The strike comes amid growing concern in recent days that Hamas is preparing to kidnap soldiers stationed near its operatives in the security zone inside Gaza.

The Prime Minister&#8217;s Office said this morning: &#8220;We will continue to hunt down and pursue all of the organization&#8217;s terrorists, from its commanders to its last operative, wherever they hide — until there is no Hamas in Gaza.&#8221;

A Minneapolis city audit has identified significant weaknesses in the way the city has monitored contracts awarded to community organizations involved in neighborhood and violence-prevention efforts.

The review covers contracts dating from 2020 through 2025, including programs established or expanded following the death of George Floyd and the widespread protests that followed. More than 100 contracts were awarded to community groups during that period.

Auditors focused on the city’s Neighborhood Safety Department and found shortcomings in several basic areas of contract administration. The report concluded that the city was &#8220;not providing sufficient contract oversight or managing contracts effectively.&#8221;

Since 2023, the city has spent more than $36 million through five major violence-prevention programs. According to the audit, weaknesses in the city’s procedures created an increased possibility of improper payments and fraudulent activity.

Among the concerns identified were invoices submitted without adequate supporting documentation. Auditors also found instances in which payments continued despite incomplete records or unresolved questions involving contracts.

Another issue involved inspections of organizations receiving city funding. The audit found that the department did not have a uniform system for carrying out and documenting site visits designed to establish whether contracted services were actually being delivered.

The report recommended improvements to the way Minneapolis reviews invoices, maintains contract documentation, records communications with organizations and handles concerns that require additional scrutiny.

Bill Glahn, a policy fellow at the Center of the American Experiment who has previously investigated Minneapolis’ violence-prevention programs, said the findings were consistent with problems he has observed in other city grant programs.

&#8220;Based on my past reporting on this and other city grant programs, any diligent audit of any city-administered grant programs would produce similar results,&#8221; Glahn told Fox News Digital.

Glahn has previously questioned whether Minneapolis’ violence-interruption programs have demonstrated measurable results. His earlier reporting noted that the city had committed millions of dollars to the initiative while publicly available evidence showing an effect on violent crime was limited.

He also examined organizations that received funding and raised questions about whether some had sufficient financial resources or staffing to manage grants significantly larger than their existing operations.

One organization examined in his earlier reporting was We Push for Peace. That reporting discussed incidents involving people associated with the organization, including an incident in which a violence interrupter was recorded on video assaulting a homeless man.

&#8220;The city seems primarily interested in shoveling money out the door to ‘address’ urgent problems,&#8221; Glahn said. &#8220;Little if any care is given to ensuring that the grant recipients are capable of or have a track record of doing the work, are actually doing the work contracted for, or whether that work is resulting in net benefit for city residents and taxpayers.&#8221;

The Minneapolis findings come amid broader scrutiny of government oversight in Minnesota following major fraud investigations involving other publicly funded programs, including Feeding Our Future and certain Medicaid services.

Minnesota state Sen. Mark Koran, a Republican, previously argued that more extensive physical inspections could have exposed problems in some programs before large amounts of public money were distributed.

&#8220;If they would have just gone to the facilities, you know, you hear of the thousands of people being served out of an apartment twice a day, all they would have to do is show up and look at it,&#8221; Koran told Fox News Digital.

Koran also cited a legislative auditor’s findings involving properties where businesses receiving funds reportedly claimed to operate. He said some property owners told authorities that the businesses were not operating at those locations.

&#8220;There was a legislative auditor report that showed that 30 property owners where these businesses claim to operate out of, contacted the Department of Education who manage it, who managed that program, and they told them one, the businesses don&#8217;t exist in their facilities, so they don&#8217;t exist, period, and one of them I think was a city park,&#8221; Koran said.

Glahn said physical inspections can be useful but argued that government agencies can also conduct financial checks before approving contracts.

He described site visits as &#8220;generally helpful&#8221; while arguing that &#8220;even a cursory, front-end review of tax records and financial statements would have disqualified many of these vendors from the get go.&#8221;

Glahn has also warned that Minnesota’s broader fraud problems remain unresolved.

&#8220;We have not slowed down, there is no sense in which the fraud has been stopped in Minnesota,&#8221; Glahn told Fox News Digital last month.

Importantly, the Minneapolis audit did not identify a specific case of fraud. Its conclusion was instead that weaknesses in the city’s oversight systems created conditions in which improper payments or fraudulent activity could occur.

The findings have nevertheless generated criticism from some commentators who argue that stronger safeguards are necessary when public money is distributed through community-based programs.

Retired Navy intelligence officer Phillip C. Parrish criticized the city’s approach in a post on X, writing, &#8220;Call it what it is,&#8221; before comparing the situation to other Minnesota fraud controversies.

&#8220;This isn’t a tracking glitch. It’s the same business model that looted child-nutrition money, Medicaid housing, autism therapy, and daycare: stand up a moral emergency, pour cash through politically connected nonprofits, skip site visits and receipts, then scream &#8216;livelihoods&#8217; when anyone asks where the money went.&#8221;

A Minneapolis spokesperson said the city welcomed the auditor’s recommendations and pointed to changes already being made to improve oversight.

&#8220;We appreciate the support of the auditor to make thoughtful, strategic recommendations to improve our department. In fact, the auditor expanded the scope of the report to be more thorough and holistic.&#8221;

The spokesperson also defended the Neighborhood Safety Department’s work and said additional steps had already been taken to strengthen contracting procedures.

&#8220;The Neighborhood Safety Department has a lot to be proud of. Our work is meaningful, and every day we’re working to make our City safer through innovative safety services, like violence prevention and human trafficking prevention, among others. We’ve taken several steps since the audit report to improve our processes and contract oversight. We are in the business of helping people and improving lives – and that means improving how we do it. It’s that simple.&#8221;

Minneapolis Audit Flags Major Fraud Risk in Post-George Floyd Community Contracts

Russia is preparing to significantly increase military spending next year, with defense expenditures expected to reach 17.1 trillion rubles, approximately $202.58 billion. That would represent a 27% increase over the amount initially allocated for 2027 and mark the highest level of defense spending since the war in Ukraine began.

According to government documents reviewed by Reuters, Russia&#8217;s planned defense spending for 2027 is substantially higher than the 13.5 trillion rubles, or $159.20 billion, originally budgeted. Across the three-year period, defense expenditures are projected to total approximately 50 trillion rubles ($589.65 billion).

The documents also indicate that Russia has sharply revised its expectations for the 2026 budget deficit. The deficit is now projected at 3.2% of GDP, compared with an earlier estimate of 1.6%. Overall government spending this year is expected to increase 13.2%, reaching 48.6 trillion rubles ($573.14 billion), equivalent to 20.9% of GDP. Moscow is expected to present its draft 2027 budget to parliament by October 1, while additional tax increases have already been announced for next year.

Among the planned tax measures is a windfall levy targeting companies in the metals and mining sectors. The measure is expected to generate roughly 200 billion rubles, or $2.36 billion, each year. Meanwhile, Russia&#8217;s state debt is forecast to rise from 19.9% of GDP in 2026 to 21.7% in 2027, exceeding the 20% level that Russian authorities have traditionally viewed as a safe threshold.

The increased defense allocation comes as President Vladimir Putin has ordered another expansion of Russia&#8217;s armed forces. A decree signed by Putin increases the authorized military force by 15,500 personnel, bringing the official military strength to 1,550,500 troops. The broader Russian military structure is estimated at nearly 2.5 million personnel.

Putin did not publicly provide a reason for the latest increase. It comes, however, as Russian forces continue to suffer substantial casualties in Ukraine and battlefield advances have slowed. Extensive Ukrainian drone operations and recent Ukrainian gains in several areas of the front have added further pressure on Russian forces.

Since March, when Putin approved the first of four military expansion decrees this year, the combined increase in authorized personnel has reached 47,860 troops.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the latest decree on X, claiming that Russia &#8220;has already begun additional mobilization&#8221; and is using several recruitment methods, including efforts to attract additional foreign fighters. Zelensky also said Ukrainian authorities have information indicating that 8,000 North Korean troops are currently in Russia, with another 10,000 expected to arrive.

Russia is estimated to be adding approximately 30,000 new military personnel each month. Politico reported in late August that around 100,000 Russians had left for Georgia during a single week amid concerns about possible conscription.

The Jerusalem Post reported that intelligence obtained following the September 2 detention of senior Hamas official Mu&#8217;in al-Arabid has been used by Israel to help locate senior Hamas figures, financial assets, and weapons.

On September 2, the IDF, Shin Bet, and several Palestinian terrorist militias detained Mu&#8217;in al-Arabid, identified as a senior Hamas internal security official.

The IDF and Shin Bet announced Tuesday that Izz al-Din al-Bik, commander of Hamas’s Northern Gaza Brigade, was killed overnight in Gaza City.

Al-Bik’s death marked the third reported killing of a Hamas terrorist brigade commander since September 11. Three of the group’s five brigade commanders have now been killed during that period.

Al-Bik had led the Northern Gaza Brigade since November 10, 2023, when Israel killed his predecessor, Ahmed Randur.

In a joint statement, the IDF and Shin Bet said al-Bik oversaw the terrorist brigade’s operatives and helped direct attacks against Israeli troops and civilians.

The IDF also said he had been working to restore the terrorist groups military capabilities after they sustained extensive damage during the three-year war.

Defense Minister Israel Katz announced al-Bik’s death shortly before the IDF and Shin Bet released their statement.

Two additional Hamas brigade commanders were killed earlier in September

In mid-September, the IDF and Shin Bet said they killed Muhammad Yazouri in the Khan Yunis area. Yazouri had commanded Hamas’s Khan Yunis Brigade.

Before assuming that role, Yazouri held several senior positions within Hamas, including deputy commander of the Khan Yunis Brigade.

He succeeded Rafa Salame.

Around the same time, the IDF and Shin Bet said they had killed Nayal Abu Obeid, commander of Hamas’s Rafah Brigade.

Abu Obeid had assumed command after his predecessor, Mohammad Shabanah, was killed by the IDF in May 2025.

The IDF described Abu Obeid as a significant figure in Hamas’s leadership structure. He had previously served as deputy commander of the Rafah Brigade and led the Tel al-Sultan and Yibna Battalions.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is disputing the account given by U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue that Trump asked Chinese President Xi Jinping whether Beijing was interested in purchasing American weapons, putting the president’s comments at odds with those of his own ambassador.

When questioned Monday about Perdue’s remarks from the weekend, Trump initially appeared to suggest that the ambassador may have been referring to Taiwan rather than China. Trump then indicated that extending such an offer to Beijing could potentially be worthwhile, saying “maybe it’s a good idea” to make such an offer to China.

The disagreement comes as the Trump administration faces questions over its broader strategy toward Beijing. The conflicting accounts over potential U.S. arms sales highlight uncertainty surrounding Washington’s China policy, following Xi’s highly publicized state visit to the United States last week. During that visit, Trump appeared to secure limited movement on several major issues.

Perdue discussed the matter during an appearance with Shannon Bream on Fox News Channel’s “Fox News Sunday” several days after the Trump-Xi summit. The ambassador did not say exactly when the alleged offer was made. Such a proposal would represent a major departure from longstanding U.S. policy toward China and Taiwan and could raise concerns about sensitive American military technology potentially reaching a geopolitical rival.

Trump administration distances itself from ambassador’s remarks

The State Department sought Monday to clarify that the administration has no intention of selling American weapons to China. A department spokesperson stated that “U.S. law prohibits arms sales to China and there is no offer or plan to sell arms to China.”

Trump appeared to distance himself from Perdue’s account later in the day when reporters asked him about the ambassador’s remarks.

“To China? You mean to Taiwan?” he said when a reporter asked him about Perdue’s account.

Trump then indicated that he was unfamiliar with the specific account attributed to Perdue and said he would seek clarification from the ambassador.

“I never heard of that one. I’m going to have to ask him,” Trump said.

At least seven people were killed and more than 50 injured Monday in a series of Russian attacks across Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The strikes extended across several parts of the country, with Russian weapons hitting residential buildings, workplaces, data facilities and a prominent scientific institution in the center of Kyiv. The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was among the sites damaged in the attacks.

CBS News correspondent Aidan Stretch was again forced to seek shelter from incoming Russian weapons shortly after reaching the scene outside the damaged science academy in Kyiv.

The latest escalation came as international diplomatic efforts continued at the United Nations, where governments have been seeking progress toward negotiations aimed at ending Russia&#8217;s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, now in its fifth year.

The Kremlin offered little indication that a rapid diplomatic breakthrough was approaching. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed to recent Ukrainian attacks, including those carried out during Russia&#8217;s parliamentary elections, as a reason for the bleak outlook.

&#8220;Ukraine will have to pay a price for the actions that have taken place in recent months,&#8221; Peskov told reporters. &#8220;That is happening right now.&#8221;

Speaking to the U.N. General Assembly on Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also accused European governments of standing in the way of negotiations involving Washington.

&#8220;Europe is doing everything it can to thwart peace talks in which the Trump administration is interested,&#8221; Lavrov said, as Moscow continued portraying the war as exposing divisions among NATO members.

Kyiv among cities struck in latest drone campaign

The Kyiv region suffered multiple casualties as Russian drones struck a number of locations. Officials reported four deaths and eight injuries in the region.

One of those killed was a woman who died Monday afternoon when a strike hit Kyiv&#8217;s Shevchenkivskyi district. The city&#8217;s military administration said the National Academy of Sciences was damaged, adding the institution to the list of significant sites affected by the fighting. A pharmaceutical facility and several gas stations were also struck.

Elsewhere in central Ukraine, a drone attack on an office complex in Dnipro occurred during business hours. Local authorities said three people died and at least 12 others were wounded.

Kharkiv also came under attack. A nine-story residential building in the northeastern city was struck, leaving 43 people injured, including 11 children, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

In the Chernihiv region, four people — among them two teenage girls — were injured Sunday evening after a Russian drone hit a residential area, regional military administrator Viacheslav Chaus said.

Russia&#8217;s Defense Ministry reported that its forces had attacked two data centers in Kyiv and several gas stations. It also said a distribution facility operated by postal company Nova Poshta was struck in Odesa.

The Russian military additionally reported attacks on two ships — one operating in the Black Sea and another located at the Ukrainian port of Chornomorsk.

Moscow said the attacks were intended to interfere with Ukraine&#8217;s grain shipments. Any prolonged disruption to those exports could also have consequences for nations that depend on Ukrainian agricultural products.

Civilian locations have frequently been affected by Russian airstrikes during the war, although the Kremlin maintains that its forces concentrate their attacks on military targets.

Ukraine reports battlefield gains in Donetsk

Despite months of relatively limited movement along much of the front, Ukrainian troops have launched a new offensive known as Operation Vivaldi.

Ukraine&#8217;s Third Army Corps said its forces had taken another 20 square miles of territory, putting the total area it says it has regained during the operation at 68 square miles.

The Ukrainian military said it had employed modified Soviet-era BTR-60 armored vehicles as remotely operated explosive weapons against heavily fortified Russian positions. Ground-based robotic systems were also reportedly used during the offensive.

The reported advances are in Donetsk, an eastern Ukrainian region that Russian forces have spent years trying to capture.

Russia had not immediately issued a response to Ukraine&#8217;s claims regarding the reported territorial gains.

Instead, Russia&#8217;s Defense Ministry announced that its forces had taken control of two settlements: Novovodiane in Donetsk and Ulanove in the Sumy region.

The competing battlefield claims could not be independently confirmed.

Ukraine targets sites inside Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had carried out long-range attacks against defense-related facilities in Russia&#8217;s Tula and Voronezh regions, along with oil infrastructure in Krasnodar.

Ukraine has increasingly used long-range drones to strike Russian fuel storage sites and industrial facilities that contribute to Moscow&#8217;s economy and military operations.

Russian authorities in Krasnodar said Ukrainian overnight drone attacks ignited fires at three infrastructure locations. Officials did not specify exactly which facilities were affected.

Russia&#8217;s Defense Ministry said its air-defense forces intercepted 254 Ukrainian drones during the overnight barrage.

A 15-year-old teenager was wounded in Holon on Monday after an explosive device detonated, prompting Israel Police to open an investigation into the incident.

Israeli media reported that the teenager may not have been the intended target of the explosion.

Police said the teenager suffered moderate to serious injuries and was evacuated to a hospital for treatment. Magen David Adom reported that the victim was conscious when emergency responders arrived and received medical care at the scene before being transported to the hospital.

According to police, the incident is believed to have a criminal motive. N12 reported that a source familiar with the investigation said the explosion occurred near the residence of a person known to police as a criminal figure.

Police have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosion and are working to determine who was responsible.

Liberman Responds

Yisrael Beytenu chairman MK Avigdor Liberman criticized the government following the explosion, saying that &#8220;the governance in the State of Israel is collapsing.&#8221;

He cited a series of recent security incidents as evidence of what he described as a broader breakdown in public safety, including &#8220;nonstop shooting in Rahat&#8221; and a rocket attack on a home in Jaljulya the previous week.

&#8220;Families in Israel are no longer safe even in their own homes,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The criminals are not afraid because they know that under the October 7 massacre government, there is no law and no justice.&#8221;

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described the suffering of Palestinians under Israel’s government as “a stain on the conscience of the world” during a speech at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool.

Miliband received a standing ovation as he said the government led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham had significantly changed its approach to Israel and the Palestinians.

“We call out ethnic cleansing by the settler terrorists in the West Bank,” he said. “We call out the evidence of war crimes in Gaza. We call out Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine.”

Miliband also emphasized Britain’s intention to halt trade with Israeli settlements, saying, “We will disrupt the supply lines of British finance, British construction and British services for illegal settlements.”

He said Britain’s decision to impose sanctions on Israelis living beyond the Green Line had “mobilized the international community: country after country.”

The foreign secretary also condemned “Hamas’s murderous attack on October 7th,” while stressing that the Labour Party “will always recognize the threats Israel faces and stand emphatically against those who seek its destruction.”

However, Miliband argued that Hamas’s 2023 attack did not excuse the actions of Israel’s government in Gaza and Judea and Samaria. He said the invasion “cannot justify the suffering the Netanyahu government has inflicted in Gaza and the West Bank. This suffering is a stain on the conscience of the world.”

Miliband also addressed Iran, pledging continued British efforts to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“We will stand up to prevent a nuclear Iran through economic sanctions,” says Miliband. “We will act against the proxies of Iran. And we will continue to isolate Iran so that they reopen the Strait of Hormuz.”

UK Foreign Secretary Says Settlement Sanctions Have Spurred International Action

The United Kingdom plans to revive a refugee resettlement program that will give priority to Palestinian refugees and Afghan women, according to a report published Sunday by The Guardian.

British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to announce the reopening of the UK’s resettlement scheme at the Labour Party conference tomorrow, the report said. The program has effectively been on hold for approximately two years, despite never being formally shut down.

Under the renewed program, Palestinians and Afghans are expected to account for roughly one-quarter of those resettled in Britain. The revised scheme will also provide refugees with a more accessible pathway toward obtaining permanent settlement status in the UK.

Israel&#8217;s Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, said Sunday that the life of his son Neria remains in grave danger, days after the IDF reservist was critically wounded in a terror attack, but that the family has seen encouraging signs.

Neria Leiter, 39, was wounded Wednesday when a Palestinian terrorist rammed his car into a military checkpoint on Route 443, northwest of Jerusalem. The IDF said the terrorist was shot dead. Neria underwent emergency brain surgery and remains hospitalized in critical condition at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem.

In a Hebrew-language post on X, the ambassador wrote:

&#8220;My family joins me in thanking everyone for their prayers and support. Neria&#8217;s life still hangs by a thread, but we have seen promising signs, and we are holding on to them with hope. We believe in the power of prayer, that Hashem hears prayer and can heal when healing seems impossible. Alongside my gratitude to everyone for their concern, I ask that the prayers for Neria also include blessings for all those who have been seriously wounded by terrorists. They and their comrades are the heroes who ensure that we will stand firm and prevail in the battle against those who spread murder and destruction. This is a fight for the future of civilization, nothing less.&#8221;

Leiter had been scheduled to accompany Prime Minister Netanyahu to the United Nations but flew back to Israel after the attack. His eldest son, Maj. (res.) Moshe Yedidya Leiter, was killed in Gaza in 2023.

Former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Sunday that Israel received a significant warning from Hamas ahead of the terror group’s October 7, 2023, attack, but security officials interpreted it as a reference to a potential prisoner exchange rather than an indication that Hamas was preparing an assault.

In an interview with Army Radio, Gallant said Hamas sources delivered a message to the Shin Bet in September 2023 stating that then-Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar “will cause the prisons to quake.” According to Gallant, this was the only warning of its kind that reached Israel’s domestic security agency before October 7.

Gallant said Israeli intelligence officials believed the message was connected to a possible deal involving Elizabeth Tsurkov, an Israeli-Russian researcher who had been abducted earlier that year by a Shiite militia in Iraq.

He also said he had not known at the time about reports that the United Arab Emirates had warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, followed by a separate warning from Egypt. Gallant said he first learned about those alleged warnings through recent media reports.

“I heard about these warnings for the first time from the media,” he said, adding that if the reports were accurate and the information was not shared with the security establishment, it would amount to “a very serious flaw in the overall assessment.”

“If the prime minister receives a warning from the leader of a country, it is not his political asset; it is a security asset of the security establishment,” Gallant said. He maintained that such information might have influenced how senior defense officials assessed the situation in the days immediately preceding the attack.

Gallant specifically referred to security discussions led by then-IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi on October 6 and 7. He said that had Halevi known Netanyahu had previously received such a warning, the information could have changed his interpretation of intelligence and other indications emerging at the time.

According to Gallant, senior Israeli officials participated in repeated security assessments during the weeks before the attack, including discussions focused on Iran. He said he did not remember Netanyahu telling those meetings that he had received a warning concerning Hamas.

Gallant additionally said that no Egyptian warning had been brought to his attention before October 7. “It was not said; not to me, not to the chief of staff, and in my opinion not to the head of the Shin Bet either,” he said.

He said that during the subsequent war, there were occasions when he became aware of sensitive communications involving Netanyahu only after American officials contacted him to confirm what the prime minister had told them. Gallant said the Americans had limited confidence in Netanyahu’s account, and that he later sought clarification directly from the prime minister. He added that he had received neither a written nor verbal briefing about those matters beforehand.

Gallant’s comments followed statements by former Palestinian Authority minister Sufian Abu Zaida, who said he personally passed Sinwar’s “earthquake” warning to Shin Bet officials in September 2023. Abu Zaida said he delivered the message in both Arabic and Hebrew and was called to an urgent meeting with Israeli security officials the next morning. He said officials questioned him about the meaning of Sinwar’s message and told him that members of the security team had [not “slept that night.”]

Meanwhile, Channel 12 reported earlier in the week that UAE intelligence officials had also warned the Shin Bet in September 2023 that Hamas might undertake violent action before the end of that month.

According to the report, the Emirati warning closely matched information that had separately come from Sinwar. Israeli officials involved in evaluating the Shin Bet intelligence, however, reportedly interpreted Sinwar’s message in light of information suggesting Hamas could become involved in efforts to secure Tsurkov’s release, rather than viewing it as an indication that a major attack was imminent.

Channel 12 first reported Sinwar’s warning in 2024. Reports concerning a telephone conversation between UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed and Netanyahu surfaced only in recent weeks following a Haaretz investigation. An Emirati source later confirmed the reported call to The Times of Israel, while Netanyahu has denied that such a conversation occurred.

Gallant Says Shin Bet Misread Sinwar Warning Before October 7, Treating It as Hostage-Deal Signal

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said Sunday that it is conducting “feverish efforts” to help approximately 20 Israeli citizens who remain stranded in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region as rebel forces continue advancing.

Fierce fighting resumed last week between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and Ethiopia’s federal government, reviving concerns that the country could once again descend into the devastating civil war that raged from 2020 to 2022 and left an estimated 600,000 people dead.

The Israelis are currently in the city of Lalibela, where flights have reportedly been suspended and traveling by road has become hazardous.

“Flights have been canceled indefinitely, and this is no longer just a delay of a few days,” the stranded Israelis said in a letter to the Foreign Ministry, according to the Ynet news site. “The city’s fuel, food, and cash stocks are extremely limited.”

One of the stranded Israelis told the outlet: “We have made an urgent appeal to the Foreign Ministry to examine safe evacuation options.”

In response to the letter, the Foreign Ministry said that it and several other agencies are “leading feverish efforts” to arrange the Israelis’ evacuation.

The ministry said it was “closely monitoring the situation of Israelis staying in areas where there has been a security escalation,” and added that it was “in contact with the groups and relevant parties.”

“We are continuously examining the options for leaving the area in cooperation with local parties and in accordance with developments and security conditions on the ground,” the ministry said.

Rebel Offensive Expands

Local sources cited by AFP said TPLF forces have captured several airports in Tigray while expanding attacks into the neighboring regions of Afar and Amhara.

A humanitarian source said the town of Erebti in Afar, located close to the Tigray border, was captured by the rebels Sunday following intense artillery bombardment. The TPLF was reportedly continuing its advance toward Afdeera, approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) farther east.

The humanitarian source estimated that at least 150,000 people have been displaced in Afar, while cautioning that an exact figure could not be determined.

The TPLF has formed an alliance with seven armed groups elsewhere in Ethiopia and appears to be pursuing a strategy similar to that used during the previous conflict, advancing southward through Amhara in the direction of the capital, Addis Ababa. The offensive in Afar also appears intended to disrupt supply routes from Djibouti, the principal entry point for Ethiopia’s international cargo shipments, including fuel.

At the same time, Tigrai TV, regarded as a major media outlet for the rebel authorities in the Tigrayan capital of Mekelle, was struck by a drone early Sunday.

“We heard a loud bang from a drone strike elsewhere and we fled the building,” a journalist from the station told AFP, speaking anonymously. The broadcaster had not issued a public statement about the incident.

Photographs taken by a local journalist showed significant damage to the exterior of the Tigrai TV building, including a blackened facade and numerous windows shattered by the blast.

Another journalist said the station, which employs roughly 400 people, stopped broadcasting following the attack. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Ethiopia’s federal government in Addis Ababa announced on September 21 that Tigrai TV had been suspended “indefinitely” and prohibited other media outlets from airing its reports.

Communications Disrupted as Fears of Blockade Grow

Communication services across Tigray have been severely restricted since Friday, when major telecommunications providers reported extensive disruptions to phone and internet networks, complicating efforts to document developments on the ground.

Residents are increasingly concerned that the region could once again face the type of blockade imposed by the federal government during the 2020-2022 war. During that conflict, electricity and banking services were cut off, while humanitarian assistance was largely prevented from reaching the population.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern Friday, with his spokesman saying he was “particularly troubled by reports of the use of drones as well as incidents of harm to civilians.”

Ethiopia’s federal government holds substantial military advantages, including a large drone arsenal and an army estimated at roughly 500,000 troops, as well as foreign backing, particularly from the United Arab Emirates. However, the renewed fighting could potentially involve neighboring Eritrea, which may support the rebels because of concerns that landlocked Ethiopia has been considering military action to secure direct access to the Red Sea.

The TPLF controlled Ethiopia’s national government from 1991 until 2018, when it was pushed aside following the rise of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. Political tensions eventually erupted into civil war, during which widespread allegations of war crimes and sexual violence were reported.

The 2022 Pretoria Peace Agreement, negotiated with the involvement of African institutions and Washington, brought an uneasy halt to the fighting. However, the agreement was never fully implemented, and roughly one million people have remained unable to return to their homes.

Intermittent fighting subsequently returned, with federal forces carrying out multiple drone strikes in Tigray in recent months while deploying additional troops near the region’s borders. Rights organizations have also accused the TPLF of conducting forced recruitment this year as it prepared for the possibility of renewed fighting.

Israeli Travelers Stranded in Ethiopia as Tigray Rebel Offensive Intensifies

Israel has ordered Dutch diplomats working in Ramallah to surrender their Israeli-issued diplomatic credentials within seven days, following the Netherlands’ implementation of restrictions targeting goods from Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced that the diplomats’ privileges and immunities granted by Israel will end once the seven-day period expires.

“If the Netherlands wishes to continue representing its interests with the Palestinians,” Sa’ar wrote in his statement, “it may do so from Palestinian Authority territory, rather than from the territory of the State of Israel.”

“Israel will not ignore measures intended to harm it,” Sa’ar continued. “Any country that acts in a hostile and unilateral manner against Israel will lose influence and relevance in the region.”

Sa’ar also criticized the Dutch government over what he described as inadequate action against “growing antisemitism and incitement” in the Netherlands. He further argued that the country’s “anti-Israel policies” were contributing to the problem.

“It’s a dramatic step,” said an Israeli official of Sa’ar’s announcement.

The decision does not require the Dutch diplomatic mission to close. However, the loss of Israeli-issued privileges would restrict the diplomats’ ability to travel freely throughout Judea and Samaria and could potentially leave them vulnerable to prosecution if they meet with Palestinians accused of involvement in terrorism.

Israel’s announcement came only days after the Netherlands began enforcing its new restrictions on settlement-related goods.

Dutch customs officials reportedly inspected the luggage of passengers arriving in Amsterdam on an El Al flight from Tel Aviv, looking for items originating in Judean and Samarian settlements or the Golan Heights.

The restrictions, which took effect September 22, prohibit goods that Dutch authorities classify as originating from or produced wholly or partly in Israeli settlements they consider unlawful. The measure covers both commercial imports and items carried by individual travelers as souvenirs or gifts. Dutch officials have emphasized that products bought or manufactured inside Israel’s internationally recognized borders are not covered by the restrictions.

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee condemned the Dutch policy on X following reports of the baggage inspections, describing the situation as “insane.”

“There were some people from Netherlands in our church this morning who are flying back tomorrow &amp; have to check their souvenirs to make sure they aren’t from Judea/Samaria — possible 6 yr prison term,” Huckabee wrote, adding, “A Nativity set from Bethlehem could put you in prison! Insane!”

The Dutch restrictions, however, would apparently not apply to a Nativity set purchased in Bethlehem, since Bethlehem is a Palestinian city rather than an Israeli settlement. The six-year prison sentence referenced by Huckabee represents the maximum penalty for an intentional violation of the sanctions, rather than a punishment ordinarily expected to be imposed on tourists.

Sunday’s action represents another Israeli response to the Netherlands’ settlement-related policy. In late August, Sa’ar removed Dutch representatives from the US-backed international Gaza coordination center in Kiryat Gat, pointing to what he described as a series of “anti-Israel measures” adopted by the Dutch government, including its planned restrictions on settlement imports. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved that decision.

The diplomatic dispute is unfolding as several European governments take additional steps targeting economic activity connected to Israeli settlements.

On September 8, Britain announced plans to prohibit imports from Judean and Samarian settlements as part of a broader sanctions package. The proposed measures would also target companies and individuals involved in settlement expansion and impose restrictions on certain exports considered supportive of Israel’s presence in Judea and Samaria

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the measures reflected the British government’s position that Israeli settlements and the occupation violate international law.

Following Miliband’s announcement, the leaders of Britain, France and Canada issued a joint statement saying they would “take steps to ban the importation of goods from settlements and enforce targeted measures against settlements and those who facilitate them or profit from them.”

Israel Moves Against Dutch Diplomats After Settlement Goods Ban Takes Effect

A former bodyguard to slain Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was reportedly granted asylum and later British citizenship before being arrested in connection with an alleged terrorist plot targeting Jews and Israeli-linked individuals in Europe.

According to The London Times, which reported Sunday that the former bodyguard had received asylum in Britain, he joined Haniyeh’s security detail shortly after Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian Authority legislative elections, briefly resulting in Haniyeh becoming prime minister of the Palestinian Authority.

The former bodyguard reportedly departed Gaza for the final time in 2012 and later relocated to Britain. The Times said he was among several Hamas members granted asylum during the following decade after claiming they faced persecution in Egypt.

At the time, Britain designated Hamas’s military wing as a terrorist organization, while the group’s political wing, which was headed by Haniyeh, was not formally banned in the UK until 2021.

The former bodyguard was eventually granted British citizenship and settled in the suburbs of a major English city, working as an IT consultant despite his publicly known connections to Hamas, according to the report.

The Times reported that British security authorities had not considered him a priority when he allegedly began working with other Hamas operatives to prepare attacks against Jewish and Israeli targets in Europe.

The newspaper identified him only as “Mr. X,” citing a British court order that prohibits publication of his identity in order to prevent potential prejudice to another criminal proceeding involving him.

However, information published by The Times about Mr. X, including his age being in his 40s, his father’s senior position within Hamas, his arrest in Egypt more than a decade ago, his arrest in London in November in connection with last year’s alleged plot, his recording of a video announcing the planned operation, and his pending extradition to Germany corresponds with German court documents identifying Mohammed A. German newspaper Die Welt has reported that Mohammed A. is the son of Hamas politburo member Basem Naim.

German prosecutors have said Mohammed A. was detained in London under a German arrest warrant and described him as the alleged leader of the terrorist plot uncovered last year.

In November, the Mossad identified Mohammed Naim as the alleged owner of weapons discovered in Vienna during an international investigation into a suspected Hamas plan to attack Jewish and Israeli institutions in Germany.

Naim was also accused of helping obtain weapons for three suspected Hamas operatives who were arrested in Berlin approximately one week before the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.

The Mossad said Naim met with his father in Qatar in September 2025, roughly one month before the second anniversary of the October 7 attack. According to the agency, the meeting suggested “possible involvement of Hamas leadership in authorizing and directing terror activity in Europe.”

The Mossad also said Hamas members based in Turkey may have played a role in preparing the planned attacks. The agency added that cooperation among European countries in confronting the threat “reflects growing international recognition of the increasing danger and their determination to thwart any Hamas activity on their territory.”

Hamas Leader’s Former Bodyguard Granted UK Asylum Before Alleged Terror Plot Targeting Jews

US President Donald Trump said Sunday that he anticipates renewed negotiations with Iran in the coming week, even after turning down a ceasefire proposal presented by Tehran.

Iranian officials arrived at the United Nations General Assembly in New York carrying a proposal that called for a seven-day truce, followed by the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping.

Trump rejected the proposal and has indicated that he is considering a return to extensive US airstrikes against Iranian targets. However, in an interview with Axios, he said he still expects discussions with Tehran to restart.

“They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make,” Trump told Axios. “It is what we would have maybe agreed to a year ago.”

“They overplayed their hand,” Trump said, in the interview published Sunday.

Axios, citing people familiar with the situation, reported that indirect discussions between the United States and Iran could begin as soon as Monday.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said Tehran was seeking excessive concessions in exchange for returning to negotiations.

“This was, I think, a pretty cynical attempt to put something on the table that they knew was unacceptable. To ask for the release of the blockade, the sanctions, international sanctions and access to billions in assets, just to talk,” he told NBC News in an interview broadcast Sunday.

“I think it’s kind of common sense that the president doesn’t have a lot of confidence this time after we just tried a few months ago,” Waltz said.

Waltz said Iran “can come to the table and in accordance with international law, in accordance with their obligations in the non-proliferation treaty and… Heck, our negotiators even offered to sell them uranium.”

Tehran: ‘We will not back down’

Iran continued Sunday to insist that its conditions must be met before the Strait of Hormuz can reopen, leaving the Gulf portion of the conflict at an impasse as fighting continues in Yemen.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial passage for global energy shipments and has become a major focus of the confrontation between Washington and Tehran, which began nearly seven months ago after the United States and Israel launched a series of attacks against Iran.

According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Tehran&#8217;s proposal called for an end to hostilities throughout the Middle East, including Lebanon, and a return to terms contained in an earlier ceasefire agreement that subsequently collapsed. In Lebanon, Hezbollah, the Iran-backed terror group, has continued fighting with Israel.

That previous agreement fell apart during the confrontation over Hormuz. It included provisions for releasing frozen Iranian funds, removing sanctions on Iranian oil and ending the US naval blockade.

“Our conditions are clear, and any move toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz is contingent upon these conditions being fulfilled. We will not back down from them,” Araghchi said on Sunday, state broadcaster IRIB reported.

“We have never closed the door to diplomacy or negotiations, but at the same time, we have never backed down from our rights,” he said.

Meanwhile, Iran&#8217;s Revolutionary Guards said Sunday that they had captured an American submersible drone in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Revolutionary Guards said the underwater device was being used “for espionage purposes,” and that it was “now in the hands of the force’s specialists for data recovery.”

The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in June intended to bring the conflict to an end, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and begin negotiations concerning Iran&#8217;s nuclear program.

That arrangement unraveled soon afterward after Iran opened fire on commercial vessels in Hormuz, accusing them of departing from their authorized routes through the waterway.

Iran says vessels must receive permission before entering the strait, citing concerns involving security and national sovereignty.

Vessels that decline to follow those requirements are frequently attacked, while the United States has periodically carried out strikes against Iranian coastal positions in response.

Speaking at the United Nations, Araghchi said Iran had delivered a specific seven-day proposal to Washington through Qatar, adding: “The choice now rests with the United States.”

Hossein Mohebi, a spokesman for Iran&#8217;s Revolutionary Guards, was quoted by the Tasnim news agency as saying: “We will not cease punishing the US until Iran’s seven conditions are met.”

Mohebi told AFP in an exclusive interview Tuesday that an end to hostilities in Yemen was also included among Tehran&#8217;s demands.

Trump Signals New Iran Talks as Hormuz Dispute Keeps Truce Out of Reach

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that Iran is “fully prepared” if President Trump orders fresh strikes against the Iranian regime following the November midterm elections.

In an interview with NBC News’s Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press,” Araghchi said the United States has “tested us in their aggression” as well as through diplomatic efforts. He said that despite Trump rejecting Iran’s seven-day proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and establish a ceasefire, Tehran’s offer remains on the table.

“We are fully prepared for the war to be resumed,” Araghchi told Welker. “And I repeat, we stand firm in the face of any new aggression, even if it comes to a doomsday war. But at the same time, we stand ready for diplomacy. It is up to President Trump to choose.”

Araghchi acknowledged that Trump had rejected the proposal but said Iranian negotiators are still waiting “for an official response through the mediators.”

The foreign minister said any further fighting would resemble earlier exchanges of strikes, while emphasizing that Iran’s military has “changed our tactics, and we are fully prepared to do that.”

Araghchi defended Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities, saying the program is legal and serves “certain” purposes, including “medical purposes and other purposes.” Welker challenged that position, pointing out that Iran’s 60 percent enrichment level is 20 times higher than what is required to generate electricity. She then asked whether Tehran would permit the United States to remove its enriched uranium as part of an agreement to end the hostilities.

“We have removed any concern in our past negotiations,” Araghchi said. “If there is still such a question, then why did they bomb us? Are they allowed to bomb anything that they think is illegal, or there is no justification for that? War is not a solution. That was a subject for negotiation, and we did it in the past.”

Welker also questioned Araghchi about the condition of Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who was reportedly seriously wounded in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Feb. 28. Those strikes killed his father and predecessor, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with several members of the family.

Mojtaba Khamenei is believed to remain in hiding and has not appeared publicly or been photographed since taking over from his father. Araghchi attributed his absence to “security reasons,” citing “indications” that the United States poses a threat.

“We receive his comments, and orders, and opinions,” he added. “And there is a national consensus on decision-making. It is false if somebody thinks that there are different sources of power inside Iran. We move based on national consensus.”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Fox News’s Bret Baier on Thursday that he last met with the younger Khamenei in person roughly a month and a half ago. Asked by Baier whether Khamenei remains capable of governing, Pezeshkian responded, “Very much so, completely.”

Before the United Nations General Assembly, Pezeshkian said Tehran remains open to reaching an agreement before the November midterm elections.

Iran Says It Is “Fully Prepared” for Renewed Conflict but Leaves Door Open to Diplomacy

FAIRFORD, England, Sept. 27, 2026 — British authorities arrested five men Sunday on suspicion of explosives and terrorism-related offenses near RAF Fairford, a military facility used by the United States in operations against Iran. Police launched the investigation after receiving a report that three vans were traveling toward the airfield.

U.S. President Donald Trump said the suspects were allegedly planning to do &#8220;big damage&#8221; and had been monitored by British and American authorities before their arrests.

British counterterrorism officers said police were alerted during the early hours of Sunday after three vehicles were reported behaving suspiciously while apparently heading toward RAF Fairford in western England.

Armed police detained the five men, who were subsequently held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. Authorities said the situation was considered contained, but they have not publicly identified the individuals or disclosed who they believe may have been behind the suspected operation.

A person familiar with the investigation said authorities currently consider an Iranian-linked motive the leading possibility. Investigators are also examining whether the incident could have involved Russian sabotage or an Islamist extremist plot.

POLICE CONTINUE INVESTIGATION INTO INCIDENT

&#8220;We are in the early stages of an investigation, and five men remain in custody,&#8221; Counter Terrorism Policing Senior National Coordinator Vicki Evans said in a statement.

&#8220;As you would expect we are working closely with our partners to understand the circumstances of the incident.&#8221;

Police established a 400-meter security perimeter around the air base while bomb disposal specialists examined the vehicles. Authorities also evacuated residents from 85 homes in a nearby village, while armed officers maintained a security presence around the area.

The British government has authorized the United States to operate bombers from Fairford for missions targeting Iranian missile sites involved in attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Officials said Prime Minister Andy Burnham was being kept informed about Sunday&#8217;s events.

Burnham expressed gratitude to police and military personnel involved in responding to the incident, writing on X: &#8220;I know today&#8217;s incident near RAF Fairford will be deeply concerning for local residents and for many people following developments across the country&#8221;.

The British government said in July that its armed forces were prepared to defend the country following a warning from Iran&#8217;s Revolutionary Guards concerning the use of Fairford by American bombers. Iran had said that bases used to launch attacks could be regarded as legitimate targets.

Trump praised the British response when speaking to reporters, saying: &#8220;The arrest in the UK was fantastic,&#8221; and describing it as &#8220;an amazing job&#8221;.

&#8220;We had them under investigation. They were looking to ‌do big damage to our fort and working with the British worked out great &#8230; We had them under view for a long time, and we got them,&#8221; Trump added.

Security measures were heightened around the base Sunday morning, with armed police blocking access and heavy machinery being used to restrict entry. Reuters witnesses also reported increased security at other British installations used by U.S. forces, including RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in eastern England, where soldiers and armored vehicles were stationed near entrances.

LOCAL RESIDENT&#8217;S WARNING HELPED TRIGGER RESPONSE

A nearby farmer told the Daily Telegraph that she contacted police after observing several vans and people behaving unusually while she was returning home from a party.

&#8220;I saw a group of Middle Eastern-looking young guys running off through the trees. Some of them had masks or balaclavas on, and they all scattered ahead of us as we drove back past,&#8221; she told the paper.

&#8220;Some of them ran into the fields, and some of them turned to run towards the air base &#8230; I mean, you don’t see masked men running around at half one in the morning in the countryside near a secure air base and not have concerns.&#8221;

Local councillor Tristan Wilkinson said the area had already experienced a security warning in recent weeks and that authorities had subsequently increased surveillance around Fairford.

&#8220;So there was a specific threat about six weeks ago from the Iranians on this base. At the time, there was increased surveillance around the area,&#8221; he said.

A representative of the U.S. Air Force declined to provide details about particular security measures being implemented at the installation.

&#8220;The 501st Combat Support Wing and our fellow UK-based Wings remain vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of our US service members, civilians, contractors, and their families,&#8221; the spokesperson said.

British officials have also recently warned operators of critical infrastructure about potential threats from Russia, amid growing government concerns over possible sabotage and cyberattacks.

Russia has rejected allegations that it is conducting hybrid attacks against Western countries.
